Here's a video to show you guys how to fix your truck if its stuck in 3rd. you may also be having some issues with your gauges too. Before you go replace your PCM, TCM or any solenoids in your transmission, I suggest you try this first.

Darrell, There is one on the coil that tells the coil when to fire. try " ignition switch" and just send him a link to the video. I remember searching for this and having a hard time explaining it. some guys are just convinced or confused by terminology.
I don't understand though how this could be the problem my mechanic is telling me this isn't my problem when I have the same exact issues as you. He says my truck wouldn't even start it would be stalling. Can someone pls tell why this would work? Thank you.
Mike Geremino I'm gonna try this and let you know. I guess the ignition feeds the positive side of the transmission solenoid. so I could see how not having power to the solenoid valve could cause the issues
mines a 98 silverado 4x4 it shifts properly..but when i step all the gas it does moves but is like if the passing gear gets stuck??any one kno what could be the problem...my lever position sencor its broke could it ve that?
U saved me man! Was on side of road looking up what's causing this prob w/ my 96 Chevy Z71! Tach and Speedo both went to 0 rpm and 0 mph! Shifting very weird, taking off in like 2nd or 3rd gear it seemed, and torque converter not locking up (i.e. higher rpm's on highway than normal)... Saw your vid on cell phone, watched it, then smacked the ignition switch with hand, and tach and speedo came back to life. Trans now taking off from stop normally, but shifting very hard, think still in limp mode and now check engine light on. Need to clear codes and replace that ignition harness, still getting intermittent tach and speedo glitching. Online Part links and part numbers would help? Also, maybe post mortem on the removed part would be cool? Such as simple continuity test of each wire to see if can tell which wire's the culprit? I know you said u have no good voltmeter, oh well, maybe next time... Ordering part for my 96 Z71 from Advance Auto using 30% off coupon code and $5 speedperks making the $117 part only $79.09! However, my local store doesn't have part in stock currently. Truck is backup vehicle, so can wait for it... just wanted to let you know I had this exact problem on my 1995 c1500: stuck in third, no speedo or tach and no gear indicator light. Followed your advice, got myself an e-4 socket and the part. About 40 minutes later, it's good as new. Thanks!
I have a 98 suburban that the transmission would not shift back down to low automatically but I could manually. Also the tachometer and speedometer stopped working as well. And the shifting indicator was not working either. I change the wiring harness that he showed in this video and now everything is working. The part that was changed is called: ignition starter switch. This was a very helpful video. Finding and E4 deep socket can also be hard to find. If you can find an inverse torques driver would even be better.

I myself jumped it off the radio fuse so it is tricking it to thinking it is working all you have to do is to find the radio fuse and find the bad fuse you can take a test light and it would show up negative on both sides I have no problems at all now
Sounds like a Similar issue. The ignition control manages everything from gauges to relays that effect your starting sequence, anything starting related as far as issues go can be effected by the icm. Also shifting problems, most notably with one or two gears, and not all could be shifting solenoids in the transmission that are blown, they are not expensive, but require patience to fix, RUN YOUR ERROR CODES
I have to shift my 01 manually from 1st and 3rd and my Speedo doesn’t work either so different gears, might try this, bc I was going to just put a different transmission in
GR8 VIDEO! I just bought a 99' Chevy Z71 and was told it needed a speed sensor, which came with the truck. I installed the sensor but, still having shift issues. Previous and current owners both have swore the problem is the A B shift solenoids located next to the trans filter so, I purchased them from 1A (gr8 source) at 2 4 $35. have yet to install but, after watching YOUR VIDEO I'm going to try that first. I'm also having odd instrument cluster activity and, this sounds like a sensible place to start b4 tearing down trans pan. THANKS MAN!
I read online somewhere if you have no tack or speedometer or gearshift indicator light. Put the key in the ignition and start your truck. Now why the truck is running hit the backside of the key driving it it into the ignition and see if it makes your tack and your shift indicator start working. I did it, hit the Key a couple of times and sure enough my tack in the gearshift indicator light worked along with my speedometer when I took it for a drive. This process tells you you better change your ignition switch wiring harness

I have a 1995 chevy truck 2wd,1500, and if i start it in park i cant get it out of park, so i have to turn it off,then turn the kea to where the shifter light turns on, put it in neutral,start it and then put it in drive, but if i put it in park i have to redue the process. could this be a similar prolbem???
I also have a 1997 Silverado. My 4 mm 6 point socket removed the etorx under the steering column, but my 4 mm socket is bigger than the smaller etorx bolts that hold the ignition starter wiring harness on. What did you use to remove the wiring harness etorx bolts by the keyed ignition switch???
very nice video man i have a 98 chevy c1500 5.0 auto and first and fourth gear wont work i took it to inspect it wit the computer and the code was Po753 its a Shift Selenoide A Electrical you think if i change that harness it might work or should i change the selenoides??
Thanks. My symptoms were , no speedo, no tach, odometer and trip odometer not working, driving like it was stuck in third and check engine light with codes P1860, P0785, P0758, P0753, P0740! Changing this ignition switch fixed it all. was oreilly's part, MasterPro Ignition Switch Part # 2IS136. All the other parts store had it but near me only oreilly's had it in stock.
Ok but the ignition control module is a part in the engine so im not sure what harness you bought but when i search up the part you name in this video I get a sensor that goes near the throttle, not a wire harness.
Did you have to do anything with the anti theft/security system or disconnect the battery before or after, or anything that might have to be Avoided or reset? I just don't want to trip the security. Also are your problems still gone from this fix?
i have a 02 an it acts like its running out of fuel an bucking jerking around 40-50mph an i belive its in 2nd gear an shifts 2 3rd, wont go in od, could this be the same issue with mine? i did read a few times that it could be this, i replaced my tps and fuel filter thinkin they were the problems, now today i had another problem were all the lights came on in my dash an some gages stoped working, so wtf is going on wit my truck??
Truck is having intermittent issues, randomly loses speedo and tach, as soon as I lose tach and speedo it wants to stay in 3rd. Truck starts and runs fine and I can put it into second.

I have a 2003 Chevy S-10 ZR2 having shifting problem with shifter what was a slight problem going into reverse went to crank it today instrument panel showed it was in reverse I was given advice it was the safety neutral switch and of course it was not after installing the safety neutral switch still the same problem it shows that it is in reverse after I pulled the shifter down into low and back into Park the instrument showed that it was in neutral gauges started going crazy now I have no lights one cluster someone please advise

Called a1auto parts 2 times and they can't find this what are your thoughts First time I called I said ignition control module they found one by coil they couldn't find the one that connects under the key ignition called back and talk to a manager and described where the part was under the key ignition a little black box with wires coming off of it and a big tail that plugs in and still he says no luck what's the name of part or part number
you can also jump lead by using the radio fuse in the fuse that is bad I myself I use the radio fuse so it is controlled opposition but is also a temporary fix until you can afford to buy the part
Your video was helpful, thanks. I had much the same issues - began with a "check engine" light after six or seven miles at highway speed. No codes and it would be off upon restarting. Devolved into an intermittent loss of tach, speedo, PRNDL accompanied by the transmission not shifting into fourth gear. The fix: I cleaned the ignition key module with CRC-QD followed by Deoxit - D5. Flooded the key cylinder with the CRC, inserted the key in and out and cycled the cylinder back and forth from on to aux. Repeated with the Deoxit (contains a dielectric lubricant). Problem(s) gone. The cluster lamps are all brighter.

Nice video, I had the same problem with my 99 suburban. I took a chance and ordered it through stylin trucks, it cost me $39 with shipping. Hooked it up and now my check gauges and service engine light went away. Hopped on the freeway and man the shifting was smooth, thanks allot for the video saved alot of money.
Yes it was my break light switch I have a video posted, u might want to see if u got break lights, or, it could be some thing with your neutral safety switch on the transmission
Great video, I just replaced mine on a 99 Silverado and did not fix it. I just pushed the odometer reset and everything came on on the dash so I'm thinking it is something behind the cluster. Any thoughts?

Mines did the same I had put a rebuilt transmission in it saw it smoking from steering wheel it dont want to shit out of first well it did 1 time and was stuck in that gear do you think it is the ignition switch? I change the speed sensor and it does the same
mines a 95 Sierra GMC anyways it works when it wants to when it don't my speedometer and tachometer don't work and it starts in 3rd and stays there so what I got out ove your video u had the same problem so maybe I should change that module
This has happens to me twice now, speedometer and rpm gauge wouldnt work, and was stuck in 3rd, had codes for shift solenoid A and B and for the Torque Converter solenoid
Did u figure this out I'm haveing same problem with my 96 Chevy I keep geting the codes 1860 1864 1886 an I changed the ignition wires an lock an changed all the selinoids in the pan
