A cheap and easy fix if your 4L60E automatic trans is shifting hard or shifting late. Most common is a hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear. I made another video showing how to replace this part: • How To Replace Throttl...
Bro you saved me thousands. For all the others reading. Not on transmission. On throttle body. But yeah I love RU-vid. And ppl like you that post to help out others. Thumbs up to you mann.
I replaced the throttle position sensor on my 95 GMC Sierra 1500. Afterwards my truck wouldn't start. Luckily I had seen another You Tube video that led me to believe the new sensor wasn't getting along with the old ignition control module. I bought a new module and replaced the old one and the truck started right up. And yes, the new throttle position sensor fixed my transmission's hard shift. I'm a very happy DIY'er!!!
I have a 2010 GMC Sierra and it's been hard shifting for years. I replaced the throttle body and TPS with a Hitachi brand. Been driving it for two days so it can relearn the idle. No hard-shifting yet and it feels like a new truck so far. I'll come back and post an update in a couple of months. Great video thank you so much this really helped.
@@MoMo-ps6kssame problem came back just like this guy is describing transmission shifts hard so I replaced the sensor at gas pedal sending signal to throttle body sensor when I stopped on gas. To make a long story longer that didn't fix the hard shifting. Now I'm trying a throttle response controller that can make the gas pedal respond quicker racier but the eco mode works the best for me and I feel lighter shifting problems but not as hard as before.
The only Issue with the 4L60E that I've ran into was the Sunshield!! They can Snap at very low speeds shifting into or downshifting. If it snaps?? You need a whole new rebuild! I just got mine rebuilt as a HD 4L60E. $2500 on my 2002 Blazer ZR2 with a new Torque Converter. I also Replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor & all 02 Sensors. They through a Check Engine Code. Runs like new with 300k miles on her & looks beautiful with zero rust here in TX
my 1999 astro slammed into 1st/2nd for years and i changed the filter + ATF to Valvoline max synthetic and that fixed it. TPS Throttle Position Sensor. You can open the TPS and bend the metal tab back to fit stronger as new and that can fix it. Try finding that vid on youtube. Perhaps "repairing the TPS"?
If you're going as far as pulling the pan, it's simple enough to probe the solenoids (22ish ohms is about normal) and replace if necessary. The transmission fluid cost more to replace than a solenoid...
Thank you for posting this video! I just replaced my TPS and you were 100% correct. My hard shift from 1st to second has been solved! It wasn’t my transmission at all. I went into this thinking screw it if I replace the TPS and nothing happens nbd. But it really worked and you saved me a fuck load in time money and energy. I hope you continue to put out good content. Keep up the great work you are doing. 👍
My Astro was bucking/jerking especially after 50mph. Found this vid and ordered a new TPS. Kinda tricky with the Astro but got it done. Although I didn't disconnect the battery. Totally fixed the problem! Thank you!!
Update: not only did this fix that problem, it also climbs hills correctly without harsh down shifts, service light doesn't flash anymore, accelerates like new and gas mileage improved.
Another update: please buy a quality part, my fix lasted only 6 weeks cus the TPS failed. A seller listed the part as OEM but in comparison to the factory part, it was a bit different and lighter in weight. So long story short, got a real oem TPS and it's good again.
Having same problem with '06 Escalade with electronic TB. Just bought original AC Delco Professional for $50. No need to try to save on cheap Chinese aftermarket one. Will see if that helps. I'm on my 3rd transmission. All of them had this magical shift slip in the 2nd gear. Transmission guys kept my money but didn't and couldn't offer solution. I was about to fk up my 3rd transmission which I just chanhed 3 months ago. Will keep posted if it helps. Part will take 2 weeks to arrive here. I'm in Georgia, Europe. Thanks for the video.
Dude thank you so much!!!!!!!!! That was my problem to my Transmission shifting hard, I was getting ready to get my transmission rebuilt, Thank God I decided to watch your video and the problem was solved, you saved me A lot of money thank you so much again!!!!!
Did a LS swap in my 83 C-10, LS2 with a 4L80E Transmission and after having my Transmission rebuilt for a second time, it is doing this same exact thing 🤦🏾♂️. Shifting EXTREMELY hard from 1st to 2nd. We just put 373 gears in it and I had it tuned again after doing that so I thought this hard shift problem may be in the tune. But after finding this video, I think this may be my problem. I’m going to get this replaced first and see if this fixes my problem. I sure do hope so because I’m about ready to give up on this LS Swap 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️.
I have a GMC Savana 1500 Van. I had a check engine light come on recently and took the vehicle to autozone to get the code read and it told us that it was an O2 sensor, which is still the case because I found out the vehicle has 4 of them and until i have further diagnostics to find out which sensor needs to be replaced... I then took the vehicle on a 400+ mile trip and experienced hard shifting upon my return. I am going to replace the TPS just to make sure it's not an added stress until i have further diagnostics ran.. Thanks for the advice.
Whatever code pops up on your scanner will determine which sensor it might be. You have 1 upstream and 1 Downstream on each pipe. Pre and post catalytic converter. On my 5.7 Vortec, code 171 is bank 1 Upstream (driver side) and code 174 is bank 2 Upstream (passenger side). For example.
Random hard shift 2001 4l80e 6.0, swapped the tps and iac from my part truck and cleaned the throttle body, seemed to fix it, random hard up shift 3/4 then 1/2. Took it for a beating and it hasn't happen. Thank God I was going to pull the tranny out and throw parts at it. What gave it away was it started idling 1000 rpm once and a while and then I noticed it happened when it shifted rough
My 1997 C1500 did this after driving about 100 miles, I got worried that the transmission was overheating so I changed all the new fluid with some dexron 6 oil and the filter. Now though it happens at as soon as 30 miles when it's cold outside, I'll try this out for sure
With this video I just did mine two days ago and it shifts smooth and the idle came out low. I use to have high idle and when shift to 1to2 to 3 to 4 gear has a bump now all smooth shifting.. I have 2002 astrovan 4L60e transmission 84k miles only original owner.. I don't have a error code before and after the fix.. I just took my chances and follow this video. The only mistake I did is I didn't disconnect my negative battery so for long time of working removing the dog house all three doors open my battery died drain out I just jump start with my other car then after it started I drove it bump came two times then went away while I continued driving maybe due to the transmission is trying to adapt the new TPS sensor. Thanks for the video. 😀
The problem with the 4l60e hard shift and 1870 code is the tcc valve in the trans. You can get an upgraded valve by tekpak on amazon for 18 dollars free shipping and there is a video on youtube that shows how to replace it without removing valve body hope this helps.
I have put the tekpak upgrade into my car with the smaller O rings and I still have a little harder shift. Were you able to get the bigger O rings in there? I found it to hard to get them into the bore.
Nick Stadler how hard is the shift compared to before i was able to force the bigger o rings in but damaged one in the process so I also used the smaller ones I havnt really been able to test it out though
Matthew Hoehne I managed to get the bigger o rings in the bore with a good amount of weapon vaseline. It went in really easy without being damaged. Now it shifts very soft and stays in gear all the way up. The smaller o rings did not seal correctly on my valve body.
Wanted to take a moment and thank you for this video... !!! My 1993 2500 Suburban was shifting just fine until I washed the engine, after the wash it was like my transmission was all messed up doing the hard shifting and not even shifting to higher gears... I replaced the part you talked about and it is shifting fine again... Anyway, thank you so much, greatly appreciate you took the time to share this video... PS not a good idea to wash down an old engine lol
@WeeStrom CO Guy not yet I changed the transmission fluid and it was clean so I'm gonna do the soon. As long as I drive gingerly it has no issues. I'll update as soon as I change it.
My 04 Sierra 2500HD is basically slamming into hear after a while, it comes and goes. Will this fix that issue or is it the valve body like the code reader says or is or is the this?
Alex I'm going to give that a try and report back to you and the viewers. I had a different problem with one of those throttle position switches on a Cougar I had years ago and replace it three times before I took the TB off the vehicle to see what was going on. Turns out that the throttle shaft wobbled terribly because the bushings for it were worn out. I put in new bushings and a new sensor and never had that problem again. Sadly, I had so many other problems with this pile of crap I never bought another Ford product again!
@@alexsbikesandmotors Well, it was a great idea and I changed out the throttle position sensor but it didn't correct the problem. However, it does tell me the problem is somewhere in that area. I recently had an antifreeze leak between the intake manifold and heads that was repaired by a NAPA dealer. They had to remove the intake manifold so they may not have connected something properly because it is an intermittent problem. If I make right turns it will go away until I make a left turn, or so it seems. Along with the hard shifting is a slight lack of power, like a clogged injector, or one not getting the right signal for fuel.
Hey man, I wanted to thank you for your video, you may have just saved me a lot of headache with my 96 Suburban 4x4 with the 4L60E. The guy that had this truck before me kept flawless records on it so I have the entire history and the poor guy had been through the ringer trying to get that jerk with the transmission fixed and the last thing he put in the file was "Throttle Body Sensor" along with a number and some info, so he didn't get to try it before I bought it from him (at a great deal, I might add) so I'm really hoping your and his idea works, its looking good coming from both of you, at least. I'll update later if Its successful.
I'll relate a strange one. My wife had a 2000 pontiac grand am gt. It started shifting hard enough to jerk your head back. If you put it in reverse it would jerk so hard that you thought it was going to break mounts. Also the guage cluster would go erratic. It was three days later before the check engine light came on, at that time I used the OBD scan tool, it only showed higher thaan normal voltage from the engine temperature sensor. This part cost 12$. I replaced the temp sensor and everything started working correctly. Imagine that..... The dianostic system is an open loop wired system, one sensor can affect other functions of the processor. It does happen.
from past experience I’ve had bad tps not even throw codes on the dash. If your not shifting right that’s always the first think to check. Beside obviously the transmission fluid lol
So, interesting that I came across this. I have a 94 Silverado, 305 auto. Now on the second trans maybe 15k on it since rebuild and the same symptoms happened on both where it feels like it free wheels and then SLAMS into gear like someone rear ended me. Both trans can't have the same problem even after rebuild. SO, I'm going to give the TPS a try and see if it remedies the slam. I seem to notice it more when I use the AC, which might make sense due to different throttle/rpm demand on the engine.
I drive a 2019 canyon with the 8 speed auto trans. Been having hard shifts usually during first startup for the day, between 1st and 2nd. Took it to dealership and they pulled a bulletin stating its a "normal condition" which I find very hard to believe. Truck still under warranty so I have a case opened with GM and working with them now to HOPEFULLY have this shit fixed with no out of pocket cost.
2002 GMC Safari. Shifts late, like its in tow/haul mode but then once it's in second gear it will shift way to early making it seem like it's low on power. So to remedy this I shifted in to each gear my self and it was shifting fine. I put the scanner on it and just like I thought the throttle position senor was throwing out a code.
Thanks for video, pay have just saved me a 1000$ or more! I have the same exact symptoms in my 07 suburban and will definitely be picking up a new throttle position sensor today to see if it solves the issue
@@BowtieMarco mine turned out to be the mass air flow sensor, though I did replace the sensor while we were at it just in case. But mass air flow would be a good place to start. A little easier to get to then the sensor too, though the sensor is pretty easy to replace. Hope your problem gets fixed too!
Was having the same shifting problems with my z/28. Installed new TPS and everything works great. Everyone wanted $44.00 for a new one. Got it online at AAA auto parts for 11.00 plus 6.00 shipping.
i have formula firebird been sitting for 16years got it changed filter and fluid but befor that it was hesitating to shift into 2nd gear it would wind out id let off throttle then it would shift few seconds later sound like your issue?
I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH TO TY AND MY MECHANIC!!! Put in new TPS and changed out gear oil in rear of TBSS. WHAT AN AMAZING DIFFERENCE!! TO ALL TBSS owners you MUST DO THIS IF YOUR GETTING THAT HARD 1-2 SHIFT. NOW IT SHIFTS BUTTERY SMOOTH compared to the TBSS'S known HARD SHIFT!! T H A N K Y O U S O M U C H!!💪👍👌💪👍👌
I read somewhere that hard shift from 1st to 2nd might have something to do with the 1-2 shift accumulater needing an upgrade. Replace the cheap plastic parts from the factory
Hell yeah dude I am going to go try that 👊my transmission is doing the exact same thing and I have been trying to figure this s*** out because I just had it rebuilt about a hundred thousand milesand my garage mechanic said that it was something else it was not the transmission so I'm going to try this and I'll let you know
@Alex's Bikes and Motors. Hi Alex, We just bought our daughter a nice 1996 Pontiac Grand Am w/2.4L engine and either GM's 4T40E or 4T45E automatic transmission. Today, Sunday, I drove with my daughter on a 38x 2 76 mile round trip. On the way there, I noticed the trans shifting sorta hard int 2nd gear, every up-shift. As everyone says, I drive like an old man (which I am) but at any rate, over the past 25 years or so I've driven slower than most. Always in the right lane & at or below the speed limit. So with that said, on Friday late afternoon, 2 1/2 days ago, she came by our house so I could test drive the car. I drove it a couple miles at the way I normally drive & didn't notice it shifting hard into 2nd gear at all. But today I could sure tell it was shifting hard almost every time we started to pull away from a green light, I did ask her if it's been shifting like it was all the time. She said yes. After watching your video, which was explained well I might add, left me thinking if this may be the issue with this transmission... If she goes really slow it's not as bad but when she pulls away quick, it sure is noticeable... I'm going to send her a txt & ask her to either call me before she plans on going anywhere so I can drive to her place & drive the car when it's cold & see if it shifts hard like it did today. Since she bought it from a local used car dealer close by, I told her that there used to be a law in Michigan that did allow a buyer 72 hours to return a vehicle if it showed to have a problem like this that was not mentioned. It may or may not apply with this sale but here in Michigan it was a law, that was enforced as well.... Now going by your video, was this a normal GM issue with a lot of their automatic transmissions. I mean this car has 96k miles & for a Michigan car, it looks good & hasn't any rust issues. Just the shifting issue. Thanks for the great video upload, MD......
I'm not too familiar with those cars but I'm pretty sure they use the same TPS as the truck engines (part# th149), so that could be the issue. Maybe try replacing it. Are you sure the trans doesn't have a throttle valve cable? If it does it could just need adjusting. If the fluid looks good and is at the right level, and TPS or t/v cable check out good, I probably wouldnt worry too much about it. Hard shifts (within reason) don't tend to hurt transmissions in my experience. It's soft shifts and slipping you've got to worry about.
@@alexsbikesandmotors Alex, I took it out Sunday & it shifts normally, almost can't even tell it's geared it's that smooth. It's just if you start off too fast it shifts hard 1st-2nd. I told m daughter, just try not stomping so hard on the pedal... I'll look today when she stops by for cable to the trans. That's probably the one advantage with FWD, everything's under the hood. Now if it is just an adjustment, it shouldn't take much but in the meantime I was ordering the tcs for it & keep my fingers crossed... Thanks for the advise & the reply. I know the people who owned it wouldn't have passed a problem vehicle to us, so I'm gonna go with, it's just a GM trans thing.....
I tried this today and it was a waste of 45.00 the truck still shifts hard. I’m thinking it needs the tcc valve upgrade. But thanks for the video I guess it’s always good to start with the cheapest stuff first.
Just wanted to let people know. I have owned my 1995 GMC since 1995. Mine also did the same thing idle high harsh shifting. Tried changing the T.P.S. sensor helped for a week then came back. Turns out the wire plug going to it was wore out. Changed the pigtail and it never came back. Hope this helps someone.
+MotorsAndMore - Try cleaning it / refurbishing it. It's really super easy, try this Video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KBZGZkiZ7cc.html
Samein in my 1997. I git a Bluetooth code reader and every time It’s jump out of over drive I clear the fault Codes and it goes right back in. Something to do with computer
I have a similar problem on my Hummer H2. Right now it is not shifting at all from 1 to 2. Previously would do so if car would have a speed with very high RPM, then let to rid idle without any push on acceleration and a gentle push on pedal would make a shift from 1 to 2. What hints me that it may not be trany is that actually in first gear, transmission is running very strong, even up the hill (Unlike my other prior experience with failing transmissions, where main symptom was sliding or un willing of car to have a go, even on flat surface. So do you think my hummer problem is also Throttle Position Sensor? And if so, the hummer h2 sensor is similar to what you show here or its entirely different. Anyways thanks for your great video & sharing knowledge, especially that this can potentially save thousands of dollars.
I have a 2000 2500 Silverado been driving it like that for years but will start off jus fine everyday I could drive in the city all day long so long as I didn't go over bout 45mph but as soon as I'd get on the highway and come back to a stop it start shifting hard but if I pulled over and shutoff the engine it would work jus fine again been scratchen my head for years on that 1 maybe I'll try the old TPS sensor
Could be a bad TPS. Definitely it's an electrical problem if stopping and restarting the engine fixes it. My blazer did a similar thing when the TPS started to go bad. When I first started the truck it would shift hard, but if i drove for a couple of minutes and shut it off and restarted it, it would shift normal again. Replacing the TPS fixed it.
Did you have a Check engine light and TPS associated codes, or did you just decide to try a new TPS? Here's where I'm at! 2001 Grand Prix with a 3.1-liter motor, started idling high after good and warmed up. No codes at the time though. When motor would idle too high, 4T65E trans would shift super late under light throttle. About 25 MPH and 2,500 RPM before it would hit 2nd. gear. Was OK the next day. 3rd. day, high idle and late shift again! This time the check engine light did come on. Code P0121. Scanner TPS angle percentage at idle shows 0 sometimes, and sometimes 0.39% and ~ 100% at WOT. One time while sitting there idling fine, ~ 700 RPM, all at once the idle kicked up to ~1,300 RPM all by itself and I looked at the scanner, now TPS angle percentage went up to 2.75%. From my readings it looks to me like the sensor IS receiving the 5V reference, and my ground in good, and my reference voltage is changing and being sent back to the ECM. My voltmeter is at my buddy's garage right now, so I could not do any voltage testing at the TPS connector itself. I'm ready to take a chance based on my findings, and just install a new TPS. What do you think?
@@alexsbikesandmotors Yeah, I did replace it last week, actually F'd up worse for a while. Then went back to same issue. It's intermittent though. Fellow at one of my discussion groups thinks it's the low reference ground return wire, from the TPS, back to the ECM. The Black wire, terminal B at the TPS. Didn't find anything yet though.
@@mrbreezeet1 if u replaced tps with a known good tps and youre still getting tps codes, youve got a broken wire, shorted wire, bad ground, bad ecm or some combo of these
No check engine light at first but check engine light finally popped on for a while and gave me a pending TPS code off p0121. I then later got a pending code of p0101 mass airflow sensor code but I think it was due to the TPS.
My 05 5.3l has the 4l60e is shifting hard 1-2 but only after an hour of sitting in traffic. Done it on two instances now. Hopefully this is my issue. The transmission is brand new so the only other thing i can think is the solenoids.
Hey man! Like you said not just truck but any GM vehicle with 4L60E I have this exact same problem with my 2003 corvette, it shifts at like 5-6k rpms and it throws me into 2nd gear! I may give this a look.
Hell yea ill hive this a try my trans is always giving me problems but the motor runs tits. Tonight it felt like 3rd gear was going out but shifts fine if i use the column 1st through 3rd then drive
Think this is happening to my 04 Tahoe... hard shifts to 2nd gear... now it’s starting to slip an notice abs and TC light came on but after about 2 minutes it went off...
Danny Ordaz I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and put it back... it’s been fine since... still shifts a little hard going to second but no lights an I have had least put 400 miles on the Tahoe from when I disconnected the battery
So, I drive up to about 18 miles an hour and I’ll have to left off so it can shift to second gear. My Reverse is out. My truck would jerk when I went up too high. What is it
My Astro Van is having issues with this transmission. The motor starts but have to press gas pedal to floor, when starts runs high rpms for a minute or two and when driving on high way it will not shift to over drive. Hope this is the problem.
2007 H3 here, same problem. Slams from 1-2 or when I put R/D. Temporary fixable if I delete error P0717(internal speed sensor low voltage) before taking off, but it comes back. Looks like if there is any electronical problem, computer puts tranny in safe(ish) mode. I sooo don't want to tear apart my tranny. And someone wise enough put throttle sensor inside throttle body, for better or worse.
yes, the transmission safe mode switches to max shift pressure, so it will shift as hard as possible. It does this because if there is any slipping in the trans or if the trans can't decide how much shift pressure to use, it defaults to max because it'll prevent slipping so the internal trans parts don't wear. I'm not sure where the internal speed sensor is on the 4L60E but you might be able to replace it by dropping the trans pan, not tearing apart the whole trans.
My transmission shifts hard from 1st to second after driving it awhile and when I turn it off for 20 secs and start it back up it’s fine Any help appreciated
that's exactly what mine did when the TPS went bad. Trans is overriding the tps and shifting as hard as possible, but turning the ignition on and off resets it.
A new ECM and a fresh synthetic ACDELCO VI oil solved my problem for hard shifting . The ECM after 70,000 to 80,000 miles crap out and the other thing is the oil . You have to have synthetic oil . My van from 80,000 to 149,000 miles was crap . After the new oil goes like butter and of course the new ECM . For sure you have to replace and the TPS but i don't think the TPS is the whole cause .
george stamos I'm doing the whole thing New Sonnax Valve Body new wiring clutch packs torque converter going to get the kit from Monster Transmission and a Thor Torque Converter
hey bro i changed my transmission and tps and still shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and its a bit smoother to 3rd....i have a 2012 toyota probox....i wonder if i should change ecm ....frustrated plz help
@@nickwilson5814 I would start looking into a new valve body. Yours maybe be worn if it's slamming into all gears or something else internally is wrong.
Bullshit....got 277k miles on mine without ecm issues lol Ecms rarely if ever crap out, you got jinxed big time. And synthetic vs conventional makes no fucking difference in these older vehicles aside from changing intervals. I sincerely hope you only work on your own cars
Here's the weird thing with my issue with the same transmission.. it's skipping 2nd gear but the read shows the transmission module is commanding 2nd gear on time and properly.. it's throwing no codes at all. Filter is clean, fluid is a clear good color.. I think the transmission needs a rebuild.
lol I have that problem now ..it comes and goes .. I shut it off...and it goes back to normal again ... so it acts up at times ....funny I have the same interior ...I bet that truck is green too lol
