It took me about 5 months to do the first one, working on it as I could, not full-time dedicated to this project, trial & error, obstacles, but I finally got it there. Still need to tie up the loose ends, some more wiring & details but she runs like a scalded Tasmanian Devil.

Nice job guys! I converted my 1997 5.2L Magnum Dodge Ram 1500 to Carb. Just use the computer to read sensors and feed the gauge cluster. I got tired of only being able to find chinese crank sensors for the 5 speed model that I have, sensors that crap out in a week or two. I got tired of changing them after 5 times. Put in a '73 Charger R/T electronic distributor, Accel Gen III HEI module, stand alone alternator controller, Dual Plane RPM performer manifold, 625cfm Carter AFB Carb. No longer have any problems and I can find parts at any auto parts house. The power increase was substantial.

I did the same dual air filter thing on my 1985 Chevy C10 with a 97 350 and aftermarket Vortec Summit heads. It's better than paying for the expensive tall air filter

You can make the instrument panel work, but by the time you do that, you can just buy custom gauges

I have a 97 vortec 5.7 with an aftermarket hei distributer. Did you have any problems with the stock distributer gear if it’s a roller cam? People say you must use a melonized gear. Plus did you change the front timing chain cover? Mine only has a molded in notch on stock cover and not a degree tab. Thanks

It's not an ls it's a 5.7 vortec the last year of the sbc after that they went to the 5.3 LS at least in those trucks and tons of ls engines get a carb swap lol where have u been hiding

What are you doing with the bulk head harnness for the original injectors. Asking because Inside it there is 2 wires per injector. Do you just cut them off and tune it out? Or is there a spider to 2 barrel conversion harness or what?

I'm about to do same thing but I'm gonna use the stock vortec roller cam at first. I'll be pulling it from a 97 k1500 sierra and dropping it into a 90 c1500 sierra . I've already got a carbed swapped 5.7 tbi and will be switching some stuff off of it to the vortec. Figured it was time since it's got a low rpm knock.

Mine has a manual transmission so I don't have to worry about the shift kit I just need to make the instrument panel and the fuel pump work

@@garrettsnapp7081 93 to 95 tbi pcm with harness. A holley carburetor with tps adapter. Figure out the schematics for wiring. They have them online. If it has a distributor like the video then follow the instructions.You just need the sensors needed for transmission to function.

I jave a 97 and was thinking of putting a carb on it also. I just can't find any videos on how to do the wiring. I noticed you still have to get you cluster to work. Please post a video on how you go that to work.

You can turn any gas burning motir into a carb engine and I have a buddy who converted a 6.0l chevy 360 ci fuel injected vortec into a carb motor with no computer just msd 6al ignition box with msd coil and billet racing msd distributer and he put it in his 2003 mustang saleen that had a blown motor and trans when he boight it as a roller we was drinking beers one night at my racecar shop and had a idea. That 604 crate motor in my asphalt car is the same motor as the 6.0 L vortec 360 that came out of a chevy 2500 HD except its carb motor with 500 lift cams and a holly 850 cfm vdl carb on a low dual plane aluminum intake cuse that makes more power then a high rise dual plane does at 7300 rpms. So we got to work using the intakes and parts in my shop that are left over from a few old 604 crate motors that blew up and we basically converted it for free excelt about 200 dollars in parts we needed I didnt have and we put a 4 speed muncie in it that has all straight cut gears with dog collars for clutchless shifts and dont meed to rev match ro ahift either thats what we use in asphalt oval cars and we put a quarter master triple disc clutch with quarter master hydraulic throw out bearing and a 80s style hurst 4 speed nascar cup series shifter setup and Ford nine inch rear end floater with lightened gears and lightened nascar detroit locker in it. We know these cars are worth big nmoney and only 15000 made but this car was destroyed rear end was twisted in it from a light pole motor was blown up and trans blew up cyse the kid was doing doughnuts in a parking lot with it while dad was out of town so he sold it and my friend got it for 500 dollars lol. We had a contract wrote up saying we are both half owners of the car and if it gets sold we get half of the money each and we share it every other month and we use it to go fishing for suckers to race at the drag strip for money. He will line up his stock ford lightning next to me for a race or two i sand bag loose one by a long shot abd other by 2 car lengths then i ask ppl in line up if they wanna run for a few grand and I will ask ppl with hellcats and vetts and camaros and end up going home with a few grand. We travel to different tracks to do it

Since it’s a daily driver, I needed to make sure I kept a little back pressure- otherwise all the low end torque and fuel mileage sucks bad. As it is it works great, plenty of PLENTY of power, great drivability and only sacrificing I tiny bit of top end HP.

This is an easy problem, Just one pipe enough to inlet the heater then the exit goes to any branch of the water cooling system.

Jeremiah Henderson i think the shift control was around 700.00. Wiring it is a task, don’t try it if you’re not experienced in automotive wiring. Simply because if you can’t complete the job yourself and need qualified help, it will be more difficult if you have started and couldn’t finish it.

That was difficult. I rebuilt it all custom so it had to work, using some of the original parts, manufactured some parts. But it worked great in the end. Good question! You must be doing this project to know there’s a throttle linkage problem to fix.

You have to make sure to ground all of the ground wires from the original harness and all of the gauges will still work.

Its like the XR262HR, gotcha. I'll probably go with a 270-280 if I get this Vortec long block im looking at. I have 270 in my old sbc, I think the vortec will respond well to the 270.

Very reliable. A little time consuming to get it dialed in just right, but works very well. Keep it simple, don’t set up too many different drive programs. Stick to two. A mild “everyday” and a “sport” for optimal full-throttle shifting.

@@timg9448 I have the us shift on my 96 same setup pretty much the 1st table seems to shift hard or early into 2nd and the second table doesn’t seem to make much difference. I have yet to learn it very much but I can’t find much on it either.

@@producedbysteez1402 you have to put the program on a computer and tailor all the shift points for each individual gear. It’s not easy. It takes quite a few reprogramming attempts to get it right. I can do it for you but it’s not cheap. I charge 200. But I put 3 different programs in for you to be able to change between them. You’ll be able to choose what’s suitable for each driving “mood.”

Edward Melville I had to build a custom bracket and I made it pull the throttle arm on the carb using another custom extension arm that I added to the carb’s throttle arm. There possibly as something I could have found already made, but I chose to fabricate what I needed to save time (looking for stuff I didn’t know I would ever find) - I’ve seen others use nothing but off the shelf parts. But not on 98-99 Chevy/Carburetor applications.

10-7-20220 radiator hose is too high, it will make air pockets ( hot spots) so the air can bleed out. I experience that with my van . I lower the radiator to the level of the radiator and No more overheating . But Very Good Job.

Francisco Lopez yes, I used the stock throttle cable, ran it opposite of how I've seen most others do it. I modified the bracket, ran the cable by the a/c compressor, so it's pulling the throttle lever from the bottom, toward the radiator. Added a custom made piece to the throttle lever so the cable attaches perfectly. All custom work.

I wired in a “US Shift” programmable shifter unit. It’s shown in the middle of the video during the test drive. (Not sure if it’s in this video or the other one on this same truck).

And I also converted my personal old long wheel base chevy 2500 HD 6.0l vortec converted to carb. A carb 350 vortec sounds so much better then fuel injected wgen converted with short tube headers with 8 inch circle track exaust pipes that turn out under both doors it's a beast. You live in Texas i see based on window sticker how did you pass indpection with this mine wouldn't pass cuse they said tgat it has no emissions control on it. Like a cat on it and illegal mod cuse its a carb motor wgen its supposed to be fuel injected computer trucl lol. Went somewhere else it passed

For the 99 Tahoe there are not a lot of options to pick from for a cam, if you have the Vortec engine. So just pick a good cam that is not too aggressive- you won’t like the daily drive if it’s an aggressive cam. You’ll need at least a 600 cfm carb, 670-700 probably will work best.

Pick a good dual plane intake, not a high rise because it won’t fit under the hood well. The fuel lines are custom, the throttle bracket is custom, there’s a lot of custom fabrication on this truck, I felt like it was working better than what I could find pre-made.

Either swap your trans out for a older non electronic one (350,400,700r4) or get a stand alone trans computer.

@@JayJay-ov6zd US Shift makes very good programmable shifters for Automatic Transmissions. You just have to have it installed properly and programmed, which can definitely take some time to do properly. It's called the "Quick 4"

Don't need stand alone trans controller. Take red wire from existing plug run it to battery side of hei, take white wire from existing coil plug run it to tach side on hei. Then take the plug that went to the crank position sensor and run it to the white wire that's on the tach side of hei. The trans will shift and the gouges will work

All of this work was custom, very time consuming, alot of R&D and trial & error to get it right. Putting it in a different application, like a 64 Impala, will most likely require alot of different parts & procedures.

My 71c 10 has a 97 vortec with polished performance products air gap intake and an Edelbrock 650. I want to install a bigger cam but was told can't go over 488 so can I go up to 488 without worrying about coil bind.

tony daniels The shifter module is installed to make the 4L60E transmission Shift. I’ve removed the original TPS which was attached to the original Throttle Body (also gone) and the PCM is gone. Without all of those electronic components, you need a shifter module to make the transmission shift. I tried a 700R4 Trans, not good. The 4L60E is way better, performance.

Tim G rite on... im going do the same and put a carbed engine in my 96 silvo and was told if i keep my pcm i have to take purple with white wire from crnk sensor and put it to rpm side on dizzy then get a tps kit for the holley and good to go.

tony daniels That all sounds good in theory, but I really doubt it will work. I did plenty of research before finishing this project, and the US-Shift shift controller was the best way to go.

Jarrett Dixon I believe it’s a Holley and it does have in/out & return, also has a plugged port so you can add a fp gauge.

All of that should work, tach to the DEI distributor, the speed sensor should be on the ECU end. Fuel pump SHOULD be a completely different pump and wired to key/ground. If they left the ECU in all of that should be soon working.

Step one you unplug , Step 2 throw the mass air flow sensor in the garbage can all done anymore questions. you don't need any of the emmisions managmernt shit anymore 'cause that moron deleted the fuel injection system and the electronic ignition he basically de-tuned his motor instead of adding a bigger throttle body with bigger injectors and let the computer take care of the rest. Now he has to tune it himself by constantly to make it run right, by adjusting the carburetor and distributor timing etc. depending on humidity, air temperature, elevation etc there other all kinds of varibles good god . he basically turned 1999 technology into 1970 technology good job jack ass ! what an idiot.

You get your signals to shift from wiring the stock vortec ignition wires and crank sensor wire to the hei and the 4l60e will still get the signal from computer to shift as if stock system was still in there. Stock gauges and everything work fine
