The August 17, 1999 7.4 Mw Izmit Bay, Turkey earthquake caused over 17,000 deaths, 50,000 injuries, and left 250,000 people homeless, mainly due to the collapse of buildings. Sources of building damage were the fault rupture and ground shaking, and in some regions from ground settlement, liquefaction or subsidence and sea water inundation.
