This is truly the greatest test series ever in cricket history Australia was a very tough team to beat they had the greatest bowling attack in world cricket and Lara the greatest batsman. Ever treated them like he was practicing in the nets well done sir Brian and thanks for the entertainment u are truly missed.
I remember Tendulkar saying once that in 1999, everybody wanted to play like Australia. And the WI had just come back from a beating in SA(I maintain the results would have been different had the off field issues not affected the tour) and Pat Rousseau was virtually threatening to fire lara through media houses(what class) and lara came back to play three of the greatest innings in the history of this magnificent sport. I also think that there has not been a better innings that the 153* with all respect to stokes and parera. There was never an innings like that in the history of the game prior to that innings
@@juanestadian8471 ohh? Did ambrose and walsh bat? I didnt know they were great batsmen? Also what has Jimmy Adams done in his career as a batsman? Stop being a Tendulkar arse licker
This series and the 2001 series in Sri Lanka was Lara's peak and some of the best batting ever. Measuring by averages, Lara has company but at his best there is no equal.
Oh yes i remember cricket from here on as i was in England and started to take interest in the game and it was also the world cup year!!!! super series this also the odi series was quite a enthralling one!!!
Series in Australia like in 2009-10 weren't so bad. The ones in the West Indies have been rubbish though; not even 1 win for the West Indies since 2003
nah xzagatox west indies never stood a chance after this series..while aus didn't stand a chance in the 80's..series in the 90's like 92/93 series windies winning 2-1...1995 aus winning 2/1..96/97 aus winning 3/2 and this series were all great series
some people should not be made captains. Lara is one of them. he won because he did what Lara had to do not what a captain does. captain's inspire, lead, support and build a team. overall the best captains pull off team effort like no other.
i agree with you. most geniuses don't make good captains. however, viv and clive would have struggled with this side. hooper was inconsistent way before BCL took over and then there were some dudes who just weren't up to international standard and were picked because of insularity or the lack of a suitable replacement
It amazes me that Steve Waugh tries to denigrate this innings by saying the pitch was flat while his two fast bowlers, one who was very, very quick during this tour(Gillespie) testify that the putch was abrasive and as a result there was reverse swing on offer. Which is what makes Kensington Oval so difficult to chase on on the final day. Few teams win chasing over 200 at kensington
It's said that before the second test at Kingston, Lara joked to Warne and Mcgrath that he was glad "It'll be the last time I'll ever say heads or tails". Lara ended up scoring 213 and West Indies won by 10 wickets.
Lara's standing in world cricket rose manifold after this performance. In many ways this series was a redemption for him , his batting form having been off the mark in the last couple of years.
THIS is cricket in the Windies...the cricket, the crowd, the proper West Indian stadia...now look...*sigh* If anything crickets taken a downhill turn thanks to IPL, ICL, BCCI and money
@mrkipling2201 looks infinitely worse now....when coming to WI cricket, never say that they've reached rock bottom. trust me as a WI fan, it can and usually gets worse
@@juanestadian8471mate, I feel for you. A competitive West Indies team can only be good for test cricket. There's a few green shoots of hope though. Chanderpaul, Alzarri Joseph, the wicketkeeper and a few other good players coming through. I really hope that you guys start to work your way back to some sort of team that will entice the fans back. I see a lot of your comments on these videos and they're always very knowledgeable, fair and correct. Have a great weekend mate. 👍👍
@@mrkipling2201problem is there’s too much politics in our cricket. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Darren Bravo saga. I wasn’t born during the glory years, but insularity and politics were affecting the team even then. We just had enough great players to offset the effect of not playing our best players. I’ll show you what I mean. Brian Lara and Jimmy Adams were banging on the WI doors since the late 80s. I remember watching a highlight’s documentary about Australia’s visit to the Caribbean in 1991. Wes Hall, one of our greatest players and a warrior against insularity was saying after a WI collapse, that the WI middle order had been very weak for the last 5-6 years. That would take us to 1986 after the retirements of Larry Gomes and co. Yet still players like Keith Atherton were constantly selected. Totally nonsensical
@@mrkipling2201 I doubt it’s as bad as the West Indies. I’ll give you a stat that nobody mentions but is emblematic of our fall in standards. Of the WI batsmen that debuted after 1990, only five have finished their careers with averages over. 40: Lara, Chanderpaul, Jimmy Adams, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle. No one else
Lara walking without waiting for the umpire and Steve Waugh whingeing despite being caught cleanly illustrates why the Windies were so easy to root for and why the Aussies were so easy to root against.
WI cricket is the way it is now because most of the talented players for better or for worse have no pride. They rather make quick cash playing in the different 20-20 leagues than making nothing playing for the west indies
Your comment has some truth to it but would you spend your career playing for a team who can't help you to pay your bills and send your kids to school (through to college)? That's what I thought.
@@jamesgraham9647 I agree completely. It's sad to see the state of WI cricket but I cannot be mad at the guys foregoing test cricket to feed their families. Especially those that grew up in abject poverty.
@@sliferxxxx yea the commitment could be much better from the guys and that's a fact but they are goin to lose interest if they are not properly compensated for their efforts. So they have to make us proud and they have to be paid well. But our cricket board faces some bit of corruption here. That's another story though.
The trouble that the West Indies had around that time was that they only had 3 world class test cricketers in Lara, ambrose and Walsh. The rest failed to stand up and be counted far too many times for them to be consistently successful.
@@mrkipling2201 carl hooper as well was the most naturally gifted batsman ever from the WI. He never averaged more than 40 though. We had middling talents....and we had two once in a generation batting talents. One who reached the zenith of batsmanship. and the other who should have redefined the zenith of batsmanship but fell way below what was expected
@@juanestadian8471 I heard an interview with Rob Key on the Grade Cricketer RU-vid channel and he played with him at Kent. He said that Hooper's big weakness was the F1 motor racing!! Maybe he would have that on his mind when he was out in the middle and play a rash shot!! Phil Simmons was the bloke who I thought was the biggest unfulfilled talent in the West Indies team personally.
I just want real test cricket back. All the sides seem to be pale imitations of their former selves. Australia, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand South Africa and England (I am English by the way) only seem strong because everyone else is so weak.
All I have to say, is look at the stands in every test match; full to the brim. And people ask y cricket needs a competitive West Indies. Duh they fill up stadiums and geenr
HE IS SPECIAL VERY VERY SPECIAL.... LIKE SHANE WARNE SAID SACHIN COMES AFTER BRIAN CHARLES LARA IT'S TRUE IT'S TRUE IT'S DAMN FUCKING TRUE.... THE PRINCE AND THAT PRINCE IS.... BRIAN CHARLES LARA
T20 has ruined test cricket. Lara's willow at his will. What a genius batting! Rest of the 10 + Lara vs Aussie. Very Unfair. As time passed by, West Indian cricket went from bad to worst and now Cricket is no more for Windies. Passion has gone. Now Cricket is played among India, England, Australia, New Zealand. South Africa, Pakistan, Srilanka, Windies - Slip down from Rich to poor performances. Sooner or later it will be franchise cricket. Not much interest these days.
Matthew Elliott Justin Langer Greg Blewett Micheal Kasprowicz Jason Gillespie Stuart Mc Gill Micheal Slater Damien Fleming Adam Dale & Andy Bichel moust retired before 2004 they was in & out if the team Brad Hogg & Ricky Ponting cemented there places .
yeah.. that is just one incident mate.. check Healy and cheat on youtube... And no I have not played an international and neither have I intentionally cheated to get a wicket at any level I played in.. and I am a keeper too..
ppl always say the ashes 05 was the best series ever, but that was basically england catching australia off guard, having the ability to really nail them down for the first time in ages using their own conditions to their advantage, but only really scraping across the line due to umpiring errors and australia's incompetence/arrogance. This series was an absolute classic, showing individual brilliance of a few with some support can challenge a very very good well rounded side, with such an imbalance head to head that created such a topsy turvy series... Ind-aus 01 was similar...
The 05 ashes was played between 2 very good sides and England won because they were a bit better than Australia, not because of umpires or anything like that. Decisions made by Australia had something to do with it as well like bowling first at Edgebaston but England were a bit better.
@M0H51N786 Seriously what has BCCI, ICL and IPL got to do with Windies cricket?. Windies cricket is in a down spiral ever since the 90's and the exit of Brian Lara. Not to mention the poor/worst performances of Windies team since the late 2000's.
Martin Love Adam Dale Dirk Nannes Mick Lewis Shane Harwood Brett Geeves Darren Pattinson James Pattinson Matthew Nicholson Jimmy Maher Colin Miller & Damien Wright 😢Aussies😅 that didn't play much .
Top 5 test match ever played in Modern era ( post 1996) : 1. Trent Bridge 2005 ( Eng v Aus) 2. Barbados 1999 ( WI v Aus) 3. Kolkata 2001 ( Ind v Aus) 4. Leeds 2019 ( Eng v Aus) 5. Chennai 1999 ( Pak v Ind)
@M0H51N786 "If anything crickets taken a downhill turn thanks to IPL, ICL, BCCI and money" In the same order that you mention, I presume :-) Is there a reason why BCCI is more of a guilty party than innate human lust for money? And I have news for you, friend. Every Aussie, Kiwi, Saffer, English, Lankan, West Indian and Indian playing in the IPL has that lust. Some people seem to point finger solely at one nation. Not sure if that's justified.
