Salem County, New Jersey is a strange world, closely related to my own Cecil County in so many ways. Portions of my family(and the families of various neighbors) have gone back and forth from Southern New Jersey to Delmarva for centuries. It is always a pleasure to wander through a part of Jersey that, contrary to common perception, has some of the most hospitable people and most beautiful history in the nation.
Log cabins are always a pleasure to restore. The construction is easy to replicate down to the smallest detail. Unlike Victorians, historic log structures are usually missing the many decorative elements that were mass produced by machines beginning in the 19th century. The downside is, much like historic masonry buildings, they must be carefully maintained. Much of the work done to these buildings in the past fifty years would, despite the best intentions, cause lasting damage. The effects of modern cements, for example, was generally unknown until fairly recently. Even then, that knowledge has not reached as wide an audience as it should.
Every person that purchases a pre-1900 building should, along with pamphlets explaining the dangers of lead paint, receive pamphlets giving at least some details on proper maintenance to preserve the historic integrity of the property.
I now must write up a detailed report and price estimate along with detailed descriptions of the materials I propose using if I am awarded this project. All in all, it would be a great pleasure to work on this site.
The objective with this channel is to create a secondary stream of revenue for our business to help lower the costs to those who own historic structures and cannot normally afford proper restoration work. By subscribing to this channel and sharing our content, you will do far more than you know to see that so many historic buildings are saved from neglect!
