This is exciting news. Yeah, the Rotax is more expensive, but they're definitely an excellent option.

Sonex needs more factory support for Rotax. Engine is one area a lot of builders are not willing to compromise on. Personally I am only looking at Rotax options for my build.

Bryan The carbureted 912ULS is 100 horsepower too. But it's lighter and cheaper than the 912iS! I know the ULS is less fuel efficient than a 912iS; but a Sonex isn't exactly a cross-country machine is it? Cross-county flying is "doable" in a Sonex; but your 750 Cruzer is a much better fit for that kind of mission. I'm hope Sonex do not embrace the iS to the exclusion of the ULS.

I am a bit disappointed that you did not utilize the 915. But, I understand the cost is substantial.

they have to consider the cost diff.... and the extra weight (40lbs?)

@@Feedback4UtodayYes, good point, it’s easy to shave weight by adding additional lightening-holes, space the wing ribs a bit further apart, to eliminate one on each wing, grind off some of the cooling fins on the heads, not painting, sand the cowl thinner, grind off a bit of the front gear, not eating 12 hours before, and taking x-lax… get a petite wife… that would bring the extra weight to -60lbs. 👍

btw, piston engines with electric battery turbo boost, with exhaust turbine/shaft combo generator, no turbo lag, no lack of power, engine muffling by the generator turbine

A Rotax 912 is about as safe as it gets. It doesn't matter if it's a 912 UL, ULS or iS All of them are proving as safe as Continental and Lycoming engines.
