The character was also referred to by her own brother as "her" in the film. There is zero indication that the character is non-binary. Disney is just trying to score WOKE points by insisting that because the character's voice actor identifies as non-binary, that counts as a non-binary character.

If a kid differs from what's considered "normal" and they get zero representation, they're gonna feel even more alienated. But if, say, a kid feels weird for having a crush on someone of the same gender, which can happen at a very young age, seeing a movie character doing the same will make them feel like it's okay and not shameful to have those feelings.

Studios can do whatever they want, and can just completely ignore all of this diversity stuff. I don’t understand, why seeing someone like yourself on screen suddenly changes everything, and you suddenly feel “allowed” to be yourself and come out, compared to before the fictional content was released. Documentaries about the science/biological things are being gay or having autism and other things is fine, to make people who are like that get to know themselves better from an objective point of view, but people accepting who you are, you shouldn’t waste your time on those people, even if they are your best friends or family, and as long as no physical abuse happens from you coming out or whatever, you should just take all the verbal abuse, and let it fuel yourself in becoming stronger, and further owning who you are, even if you’re a kid/teen. Everybody has this in them, it’s just a matter of not thinking of other people’s reaction, and realizing, that just being a 100% good person ain’t gonna cut it in this world, you gotta make some difficult choices to achieve your goals, either your own, or for other people, which nobody can hold you responsible for, as long as your not doing anything illegal, cause within those limits, all you do will only fall back on yourself.

The character is not nonbinary, the voice actor is, the only link is the voice actor posting on twitter "I played the first nonbinary character". There was no actual reason or reference to show that the character was nonbinary, even in speaking the character was referred to as 'sister'. Disney seems to think that just saying the character is nonbinary is enough to be progressive. Also the film is about a heterosexual couple falling in love, a man and woman, and heterosexual is a sexuality. Since this is a KIDS MOVIE and not an ADULTS MOVIE, that should not have happened. I'm not saying that they should explicitly show and explain every sexuality and gender identity, but they shouldn't treat the LGBTQIA+ as something unique to add to their character to make them special.

I can confirm I barely remember season 1, but there were some good episodes that stuck out in the good way like the one with willows memories and amity’s journal. Skip the body swap episode though, it was mostly a filler and is literally never brought up again nor useful to the plot. It gets better with each episode don’t worry and also people talk about girls kissing because this show carried very well their representation as normal things and people are happy to have such a healthy canon gay couple in a show for all ages

I don't want it to be relevant to the plot. I want LGBT people who can just be LGBT and not have it be a major element in their day to day life or the plot of the media. I want a person who happens to be LGBT. What media needs is representation that reflects real life. Showing that gay people do not need to have a "gay story" to "earn" their presence. That theyre just people who have full lives and stories, and gayness is a facet of them. I don't want another Moonlight or Danish girl. I want a real story.

Well having a character be nonbinary wouldnt even mean anything. Being nonbinary means nothing. Its just attention seeking. Being nonbinary will never be relevant to any significant plot. What, the movie will just be them constantly reminding people about their pronouns? That's annoying.

They do the same shit in shows and stuff. It like they’re purposely trying to make lgbtq+ characters the most unimportant characters. At least Strange Worlds had a gay lead but then they hardly even advertised the film

The LGBT community needs to accept the representation they already have. They should watch Nimona, that’s a recent film with a gay lead. The community is becoming unlikeable because of how much it begs for representation when everybody already knows about them and I’ve seen a lot of LGBT characters in films. I’m a member of the community myself but I like to think of myself as one of the ones with common sense who doesn’t try to push my beliefs onto everybody and doesn’t try to indoctrinate children.

@@C4ntD3c1d3 the fuck do you mean “indoctrinate children”. Also why should we accept the bare minimum of representation. For so long we had absolutely no representation so if we are gonna get it, we are gonna get it right and there are a lot of us who never get any representation still. One that comes to mind is trans people. I’m inclined to think that you don’t have any experience with hate because of who you are. Also one last thing, to say that well everybody already know is so far from the truth because there are still many ignorant people out there who refuse to acknowledge that we even exist.

I’m bisexual and I rarely, if ever, see a bisexual character and guess what…..doesn’t effect the storyline. Doesn’t ruin the movie/show for me. Cause I just don’t give a damn about representation. I know I exist and I don’t need movies and crap to validate it. It’s sad that people these days NEED to see validation on screen. When I was a kid, I would pretend I was Vegeta from DBZ or Ryo from Ronin warriors. Had nothing to do with their race, sexuality ect. It was because they were cool af. People are TOO focused on race and sexuality, especially when it comes to TV. It’s a show/movie…likely fiction. Just enjoy the shit. Do y’all really sit there and go “omg it’s a gay character, squeeeeee”?
