Beautiful! I've been chasing a Boophone for a while now. Speaking of it I almost got myself a Worsleya procera the other day but didn't realise what I was looking at until after. Kicking myself!

beautiful, i love this plant and well done. My thought on the flowering is that it will only flower once it has reached a decent size and feels it has enough energy to flower, set seed and then make it through the dormant period . When i see them flowering in the veld they normally have developed large bulbs

Oh to see boophone wild in the veld! Wishing you and yours a very happy Christmas

Burning it encourages flowering. Have seen after a veld fire where boophone are present they flower after the field was burned. Greetings from SA

That's good to know although the seeds don't need smoke treatment to germinate. Thanks for watching and have a great evening.

Congratulations Rachel!! I am very happy for you, I was really looking forward to seeing your Boophone in bloom. Are the flowers fragrant on this plant? Now, for the moment I'll try to rebloom my Hippeastrums (my red one has produced 3 babies, one of which is already quite big!). Let's see if I manage to succeed on that. :) Happy growing dear. ^_^

No fragrance on this one, unfortunately, but no sore eyes either. Good luck and happy growing!

Congratulation! It is very pretty! How long did you have it before it bloomed? Are you going to pollinate and get some seeds?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 5 лет назад
Hi Mary. I got the bulb in 2013. Myself and Liga were going to cross pollinate our boophones so I was supposed to collect pollen from mine. Unfortuantely I'm away on holiday. Thanks for watching and happy growing.

Mine actually opened out comletely in the end into a big ball but it was already going over. I've missed the chance to collect pollen since I'm away :/

Neat! Never seen one before. It looks a bit like an allium. Since its related to amaryllis perhaps squirrels 🐿 would leave it alone. They gobble up any alliums I plant in the fall. 🍴🥗And sometimes there aren’t enough chill hours for allium if I wait to plant until early Spring. I’ve been looking for a substitute, but I assume these SA bulbs might be either expensive or difficult to obtain. 🌱

Darn squirrels 😂
@botanicaltreasures2408
@botanicaltreasures2408 5 лет назад
Yes, we have more than enough squirrels to go around. One of my neighbor has been using live traps and releasing them elsewhere--like the edge of our condo neighborhood. I'm certain they just run right back. He also released them at a golf course. Probably the people playing the course are wondering why it is so easy to get a hole-in-one now.

Do you also grow the Fireball lily, Scadoxus multiflorus (formerly Haemanthus multiflorus?

Yes, I do and i grow it too. Thanks for watching and happy growing !
@manishhkr

How many years does it take to bloom? And do they produce frequent offshoot bulbs like Scoduxes?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Год назад
Boophone can take five years from seed to bloom. It is likely to take longer in a temperate climate. My seed-grown plants are already five years old but nowhere near blooming. And, no, boophone does not produce offsets like scadoxus.

Can you tell me what type of soil mix you are using for this boophone? Or is it just stones and gravel?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 9 месяцев назад
I use compost/potting mix and horticultural sand. Not sure of the ratio now. Maybe 60/40 or 70/40%.

Because this pink flower lacks lots of sun it's small but in Africa they are huge

startlingly similar to Haemanthus blooms, but the Boophone definitely has better foliage.
