The LMG do have the advantage at long range since there the first weapon in a squad to fire which in turn exposes the squad to return fire by either other infantry with LMG or tanks and support guns. Which negates any long range advantages.

MG-34 and MG-42 fire much faster than most Automatic Rifles / LMGs in general. The real worry is not the decreased performance of Axis MGs but rather that of the already lackluster Soviet DPM which is a light machine gun but barely fires any faster than the Auto. Rifles here and also obviously cannot M&S. It is also funny that the Bren is so much worse than the BAR in this game.
