Here’s all we’ll most the reasons I had to get a new car to drive to work and back. So my next video will be my new daily and why I got that. While I wait for some nice weather for the 4Runner roll paint job ! Thx for watching
Dude. These trucks are literally one of the best 4x4's especially with the straight front axle. Its also 35 years old and obviously has been modified so why are you surprised it has issues? Better sell the truck to someone who will enjoy it.
Literally everything wrong are pretty easy fixes. I daily my 87, and have 2 kids. Just need to give it some love and some updating and you'll be golden.
Same, I sometimes daily both an 89' [almost fully restored], and an 84' beat to shit for fun since I have a new vehicle too. These are one of the most reliable vehicles ever made. Best part about them is once you sort all the typical wear stuff, they just run forever.
If you still have this and it's an 22R. I am noticing on mine, on top of the Carb the air cleaner... on the passenger side of the air-cleaner, next to the latch, there is a plastic nozzle (like 3/4" long) which would allow air to be sucked in the breather or blown out... on that nozzle it looks like a hose should go on that... I haven't found a RU-vid video nor a vacuum hose diagram which shows this port...? One video looked like it was capped off, others look like has a hose on it (though the videos aren't panning over enough to tell for certain, if it's even there, or where a hose would run too. Perhaps your truck has that, and you are able to name where it goes? Or maybe it is just supposed to stay open or maybe it is capped? Any clarity would be much appreciated... My '87 4x4 my dad gave to me, but in trying to get myself up to speed, I have noticed that many of the hoses are wrong... But seems to run pretty good, though they need to be corrected and hopefully might run a little better on various levels.... any thoughts? Thanks
A lot of complaining about failed components on a 35 year old truck. I have had my 87 1st gen 4runner for a year now as my daily. Drove trips 1000 miles w my wife more than once and before w 1200 lbs 900 miles in the back. Had plenty of small components fail as you showed but that's all part of owning a 30+ yr old truck. Have a newborn and never feel that he's unsafe in the back of my runner. Your complaining seems pretty excessive and a lot of the problems are very small but seems you've never put in the effort to fix or figure them out. Also 55 in 5th gear?? Sounds like you just have oversized tires and/or need to regear. Running 31s w 410s and go 75 at 3000 rpm n 5thgear. Still liking the video
Bro if I had “oversized tires” I would go faster in 5th as in the wheel would travel further per each rotation so it would in theory make my gearing better for more top speed but thanks man
@@ryanhell6028 That's if your gears (differential ring and pinion ratio) are matched to your tire size. Looks like your running 35s which is hell for a worn out 22r to roll over

My parents sold me their 86 Toyota 4Runner in 1993. I still own it to this day, only used to adventure in. When something breaks on it, we fix it. They are so basic and easy to fix. Over the years we have gone to pick n pulls and have accumulated spare parts to keep it going for my kids to keep for another generation.
Your diffs probably have been redone with new gearing. Looking at the diff guards that are welded on, the high steer installed. There’s some money that’s been invested into it. The tire size compared to speedometer, I would say you have a new gearing install. With 35’s and 5.29 gears, I can do 65 at 3k. GPS verifies too.
About an afternoon's worth of work to fix every thing you mentionned, fix the oem sensors instead of bying aftermarket gauges. Great truck just needs some love from someone who actually knows those old yotas.
Old rigs required love my man Toyota trucks and runners are kinda a hand's on thing I've owned Toyota 4x4 trucks and runners sense before I could get my license and I'm 38 now they are though and relatable but I do recommend a weekly walk around
My 1984 2.0l 4cy is absolutely gutless and horrible on the open road but it is awesome for taking the kids down to the beach or through the forest. The kids love it and so do I. Wouldn't dare take it on a long voyage though. Can't wait for an EV solution for this model!
if you try to daily drive a beater 4runner like that one you will hate yourself. my '88 4runner is both built for the trails and is daily driver. the 22re is gone and has been swapped to a 2tr-fe from a tacoma. it has ac, cruise control, power windows and locks. the crappy stock headlights have been swapped to LEDs, and it has the correct gears for the tire size I run. it will happily do 80mph with the cruise control set.
I loved daily driving my 85 and my 86 4Runners. I wish I still had them.. My 85 would do 89 mph, my 86 did 96 mph. Both had 33" tires and 22re 4 cylinders.
The symptoms you're describing can be related to your timing. It sounds like you have it too advanced. The distributor may be off a tooth. Make sure the setting on your timing gun is set to "0" then set the timing mark near your crankshaft pulley to the number "5" while moving your distributor. You may also have a bad starter relay if it is taking that long to turnover. It may also be worth inspecting the u-joints on your steering shaft.
I've had my 85 runner for 2 years now, has 568,000km on the chassis and 300,000 on the engine and gearbox/transfer (3L 2.8ltr hilux engine). Best 4wd I've ever owned, yes they need some loving and care but hey so does ya 80 year old grandmother doesn't she? You maintain them then you build them to last. No car will last long without regular maintenance
you need a newer vehicle! i daily mine every day but they have to be maintained. problems have to be fixed. OR you could just complain about it. You are a star on the yota pages. Put a light bar on it bro! the bigger the better!!
Oh i definitely am going too have too make a video of why i STILL drive my first gen after 15 years and owning plenty of other vehicles. 55mph hahaha iv maxed mine at 100mph just this year with basically 500tho. Why in the fudge do you even drive this this thing if you dont 4wheel drive. Ever complaint has bein maintenance i dont have any of these issues. Cant even put new proper headlights in godam. I cant even finish this horrendous video
Lot of easy fixes. That oil viscosity sounds off. Pretty sure it calls for 10-30. Sounds like it just needed a good once over to check bolts. Sounds like 99% of the problem.
They call for some weird viscosity,. I been adding a quart of whatever's handy for the past 70,000 with a quart every two fuel fillups cause of the bad front main. Changed it once during that time. (Changed the filter five or six times and ran magnets on it, though.). Come to think of it I oughta change the oil, since I fixed the front main about 15,000 ago and haven't added oil since. Hit 300,000 two months ago. God I love this truck.
Firts off, fix your guages don't wire in new ones. Secondly, most of your complaints are very easy fixes or stupid complaints like gas mileage and speed on a 35 year old lifted 4 cylinder wagon. these engines do not take 20-40. They take 10-40. So the reason you're having a hard time starting is because the oil is twice as thick as it should be. The locker clicking is because it's a lunchbox locker (very inexpensive). They make different lockers that don't click. You also installed the wiring kit for the led headlights wrong and thats why they didn't work, not because the lights were faulty, ask me how I know. Get loctite for the carburetor plate bolts. The pully moving is because the bearing is bad, so change it. Don't do a half ass fix like a washer. I won't even bother with the rest. You have a 4runner that needs lots of love and you don't seem mechanically inclined or know how to fix anything right. For the love of God sell it to somebody who knows how to give it the love it's going to need
@@ryanhell6028 I hope you read this shit: it’s just funny because you posted a video talking shit about a nice car with minor and repairable damages. You don’t deserve the air you waste and you definitely don’t deserve a first gen 4Runner. Btw you could’ve easily sold it for over 6k to someone who is capable of comprehending the quality of this vehicle. I almost had a panic attack 3 minutes in just from seeing how terribly you’ve maintained the car.
Buy these, plug and play, no garbage LED's and look stock. 100% improvement over auto part store sealed beams. HELLA 003427291 Vision Plus 190x132mm I spent 10 minutes searching Toyota forums, ordered them, and had them in my 1985 4Runner 3 days after I bought it.
So you buy a 35 year old 4runner with over 200k miles that's clearly been neglected, you seem surprised when things are wrong with it, and your conclusion is you would never recommend anyone daily an 85 4Runner? How about, go through the 35 year old truck and tighten stuff up a bit? Any 35 year old vehicle is gonna have similar problems if not maintained. And BTW, the oil isn't that thick that its hard to crank when its cold. Its a combination of your battery and starter motor failing.
you can get some glass housings off amazon with low wattage led bulb's that are plug and play without that bullshit harness. i had different led's in before swapped over to the ones im telling you about and they are amazing, housings and bulb's will put you at just a little over a 100.
Love how he complained a carb truck is hard to start in the cold. Maintain your truck cause you don't seem to do that. It takes 10 w20 good God stop putting thick desiel oil in it. I daily a 85 on 37's 40 miles every day and I still run 85-90 down the highway
January in Georgia is cold lol man I daily my 85 in Canada and it starts great at -30. Your oil theory is definitely whacked check your battery cables. Should probably sell your truck to someone who knows something about Toyotas
Lol 😂 you complaining! And me wishing I had that beauty! Toyota’s best looking truck! And what you expect when you have well over 200 thousand miles on it with some questionable modification!! It just need some tlc!

@@hifromspacejojo6729 don't buy the 6 cyl, from around the same gen, go with the 22r or re, reliable as hell, if you get the manual, you can get a clutch cancel
@@ryanhell6028 I'm in North Florida, Daily a 86 just did a SAS, Finishing up everything inside and 63" leafs in the rear and regear. Let me know if you want to get tired of this thing. Can never have enough 4 runners!
Hahaha the more I watch you have to be a troll....at 10:00 minute. BRUUUH you're aware Block heated exists ?¿ Or run 5W30 Synth in thr winter too ?? 😅😅😅😅
@@ryanhell6028 well, I need a body for my 87... Haha but you willing to part with the headlight kit? I'd be interested in getting them from you. I am in northern il. (Shipping possible?)
Your problem is that you're driving a shitbox. My 87 4runner is the most reliable vehicle I've ever had. Those carbureted trucks are garbage. Fix that truck up properly and it will always be reliable.
