In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to angriefer by unlucky morpheus. This is his first exposure to this band.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

It is hard too choose a fav song of this band 'couse they are all great. They have a music idea called Cadaver - Revadac that when the songs end they play it backwards like the title of the song. Really cool. If You want clothestyling and almost progmetal You got to check out Versailles / Faith and Decision. Include eng sub in the search. Visual Kei metal at its best!

Hi Dean, great reaction! "Angriefer might be my favorite Unlucky Morpheus song. This band is very good at storytelling and the lyrics have an important part in their songs. This is a story of a person who has been bitten by a vampire and he/she's fighting with is inner voices. One voice, sang by Fuki (the main vocalist with cleans) is trying to fight and stay human and the other voice, sang by Shiren (the second vocalist with growling) is trying to push the protagonist to kill a human being, drink his blood and definitely becoming a vampire. Fuki is my favorite japanese singer and you didn't notice but she's also the singer of the band DOLL$BOXX that you've already reacted to. "Dignity Of Spirit" live would be an excellent choice of song after "Angriefer". Thank you

Unlucky morpheus is one of the best bands today IMO. The male singer(shiren) is their band founder, guitarist and composer. Because his arm was injured at that time, he couldn't play for a long time on the spot. His guitar part was replaced by a violinist(jill), just like this song. I recommend《phantom blood》live &《opfer》live for the next.👍🏻🤘🏻🔥

Please don't leave out Fuki as 'co-founder' - in fact, I've heard she hounded him for months before he agreed to start the project. Without Yuki [&] Fuki, there would be no Unlucky Morpheus.

The singer Fuki sings in a Japanese style called Shigin, usually reserved for Japanese poetry. She has no formal training in singing or in Shigin. Suzuhana Yuuko, vocalist for Wagakki Band also sings in the Shigin style. Its very uncommon if not rare to sing in Shigin within a pop or rock format. Another style Enka has long been done in old J-Pop.

LOL - Just as I suspected as a fellow musician - you were 'hooked' after the 1st 15 seconds. The talent in this band is Meteoric. If you want more violin there is a live performance that only exists on my channel, where I spliced in a 2 minute violin solo Intro that had been removed: The Tower of the Blood ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ubEOfmm0je4.html . Unlucky Morpheus (aka Ankimo) was formed in 2008 by Fuki (vocals) and Shiren (growls - he is also a world class guitarist, but suffers from a nerve condition in his hands that sometimes affects his ability to perform). They did Anime and video game covers in the beginning. Over the years they have become a full band who write their own music (with help from Mao - from Lightbringer - who also has helped in Lovebites compositions). They added Jill on violin in 2017, and it seemed to change the band - for the better. Jill is a violin prodigy that was a Paganini specialist before falling in love with Metal when she got out of school. If you want Prog, check out an Unlucky Morpheus side - project (Quadratum) with Jill, and the bass, guitar, and drummer doing cover songs of classic Rock and Metal bands. Here is a link to a LIVE violin cover of Quadratum playing Eruption(van halen), followed by a spectacular cover of The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XC2A1hbuLmI.html

Cadaver/Revadac and Dignity of Spirit. Also might wanna check their instrumental side project Quadratum's violin lead cover of Dream Theater's Dance of Eternity.

UM are super talented, top-notch. Funny describing Shiren's growls that way 🤣 He's definitely unique in that respect, though I'm not big on that. However, he is a phenomenal guitarist and writes most of the band's music. Fuki, the lead vocalist has an absolute amazing power and range that I've rarely heard and Jill is a virtuoso violinist who will blow you away with UM's instrumental side project, Quadratum, where they cover other metal songs. If you do more UM, I think you'd really appreciate the Bach-like compositional arrangement of "Cadaver/Revedac" or their newest track, "M Anthem" (more Shiren on guitar and less of his Tasmanian Devil)

Hi Dean, some more reactions to Unlucky Morpheus are inescapeable imho. I'd suggest the song "Dignity of Spirit" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x7W9DcUKY_U.html() from the same tour as "Angreifer" (which is German and means "attacker, assailant", btw:). Here Shiren plays the guitar, too. Two earlier commenters mentioned UMs' project Quadratum, which basically is the band without the vocalists Fuki and Shiren. So the violinist Jill is more in focus here, which makes her art shine yet brighter. They do covers which are nevertheless sort of unique, worth to listen to and great fun. There is a video outtake of a live performance, they play van Halen's "Eruption" and Dream Theater's "Dance of Eternity" - I recommend that recording (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XC2A1hbuLmI.html). Only to mention it once: Jill is world-class! You already reacted to Doll$Box' song "Shout Down" - the lead vocalist there is the same as in Unlucky Morpheus: the legendary, stunning, awesome and outstanding Fuki!

Let me hint at another great prog power metal tune: 絶対倶楽部 ZETTAI CLUB【夢幻大スリラー】(don't know how to translate the title - someting with "dream" and "thriller" most probably) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--NrVwg9lDpw.html; Unfortunately Zettai Club doesn't exist anymore since 2021; the drummer and the vocalist continue to work together in a new band, though, with the name Saiseiga, whose first few songs sound quite promising; e.g., the song "Illusion" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PzSDge6l3kI.html

Unlucky Morpheus fascinated me the first time I heard it. There are already plenty of suggestions for further songs, so I would like to point out their (violin-focused) cover versions. Above all, the cover of Dream Theater "The Dance of Eternity". But Unlucky Morpheus' versions of Yngwie Malmsteen "Far Beyond The Sun" and Racer X "Technical Difficulties" are also highly recommended.

Unlucky Morpheus call themselves a "technical speed metal band", but they are much more than that, they do other styles and those come under their Touhou arrangement albums. Touhou is a video game series in Japan that is very popular, some of those song are very prog. The 4 member that you see playing in this video also have a sub unit and did a covers album, one of the songs they covered was The Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater, here is 2 of the tunes inc Dream Theater ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XC2A1hbuLmI.html a much watch if you like the violin. They don't realy do videos for the Touhou stuff, but here is one song you may like, Missing Girl ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0i0l464ZJvA.html The singer, Fuki, is a singer that is in high demand in Japan, she has about 100, mainly full albums, to her name in 15 years. The band's co-founder. Vocals, Lyrics, Art direction, Illustration, Desktop publishing. Sings in multiple bands, she is the lead singer in Light Bringer, Unlucky Morpheus, DOLL$BOXX, and Fuki Commune/Fuki. Some of the bands she sang as a guest in are: Dragon Guardian, Undead Corporation, 5150, ふぉれすとぴれお (Foresutopireo), BlazBlue Phase III Chronophantasma OST, Gacharic Spin, Sound Horizon, Nozomu Wakai’s Destinia, Carbonic Acid, Red Zone: Terra Formars Revenge OST, Knights Of Round, Syu, and many others. She also does voice acting, she used to run a radio show, she has a kanji kentai level 1 degree, and she is a Sugino fashion college costume creation graduate, she makes some of the costumes she and the band wears on stage, Oh!! in in her spare time she has been known to do some modeling.

Fuki is almost always in cosplay attire of her making when performing. The band started out as a cover band for the "Tohoue" project soundtrack. It's a niche video game. They are a bunch of geeks. The guy growling (Shiren) is actually the lead guitarist and music composer. He does sing at times due to his medical condition on his arm/wrist; so that he can get some rest time on his arm. JILL (v) does a lot of his lead part now days because of it. I think that his condition is getting better though.

It's really hard to pick another one, since they are almost all brilliant. But from a proghead's perspective, their cover of Dream Theater's Dance of Eternity (Jill does the keyboard part on violin) is probably the most interesting. Here's the live version, that starts with a violin cover of Eddie Van Halen's Eruption: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XC2A1hbuLmI.html Oh, and yes, Fuki, the singer, is a real force of nature. You actually already did a reaction to her in Doll$boxx. If you want a full dose of her, check out Dignity of Spirit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x7W9DcUKY_U.html

Yes! -- Fuki is indeed a 'Force of Nature'. And she is easy to find, because she is Freaking EVERYWHERE. Between side-projects, interviews, and livestreaming playing video games with the rest of Ankimo, I'm beginning to suspect that she is actually some kind of Android that doesn't need sleep.

Great band. You might want to check out Light Bringer as well, also fronted by Fuki. They've been on indefinite hiatus for years now, but they have a small, but really dedicated following. They played some at times really progressive power metal. Very good musicianship. Also their keyboardist Mao is good friends with Lovebites and works with them from time to time. Resistance might be a good track to start with.

Definately neo-classical prog metal/rock. Fuki has worked with a half dozen bands. Very original singing style. Would suggest the song "Dignity of Spirit" (live). The violin covers of 90s virtuoso guitar works are fun too.

Tasmanian Devil! Absolutely, a fav… Shiren is the primary writer & founder of the group, and arguably the better guitarist, tho he has wrist troubles and plays less now. Without him or singer Fuki, the band does instrumental covers of bands like dream theater, or pieces like Eruption, that often highlight Jill’s violin. I’m sure one way you heard of Unlucky Morpheus was from Gacharic Soin comments; when Fuki joins Gacharic Spin, the separately signed result is Doll$Boxx, great combo of the fun loosely-cool girls and the tre-cool powerhouse Hard to go wrong with Doll$Boxx, so I’ll go uncharted here and recommend a 2018 live cover of the band Lindberg’s Believe In Love ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6UGIDmHAvkM.html Or for studio, how about @Sekai wa Kitto Ai wo Shitteirunda” (“Surely the World Knows Love”) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zx9res2ns0M.html
