Kelvin I just want you to know your videos are the only reason I’m pursuing a 1UZ build. Here in north america people give up on 1UZs due to limited parts availability and general lack of knowledge. It’s either you get an ls engine or a jz engine or nothing at all. But your videos are just a fountain of information and its made the process a lot easier. I really appreciate it 🙏
You'd be right on all accounts. People are too lazy to learn how much can be done with this motor. Thanks Kelvin! As Fedora said, your videos are a wealth of information for those of us seeking it! Stay well and Merry Christmas 🎅🎄.
Thanks for the info. I'm busy with an ongoing twin turbo 3UZ and stopped when we got to 693nm at the rear wheels. Obviously time for upgrades. I bought a set of the ARP studs as you suggested and they are in. Only one small fitment issue that will need your attention on a 3UZ maybe a Vvti 1UZ as well. The head stud on piston nr 1 that is nearest to the exhaust port needs some finesse as the timing gear of the exhaust cam touched the stud and nut. I had to grind the stud a bit shorter. The Allen key still works but only just. The nut needed the same attention. Just something small that might help the next enthusiasts. Philip
Hi Kelvin love the videos , so informative mate. I was thinking of drilling my 1uz out to take 12mm studs I wanna push it past 1000hp is it worth it ? Or are the 10mm ARP good enough ?
Kelvin, I noticed that the rod bolts were for "Cracked Rods""... Do they work on Bent rods as well? if so, I need some! Thanks for the info. I wonder if ARP would consider offering a package with shorter studs, or a kit specifically for the V8's.
Was actually chatting to mark about getting these. There is a guy on RU-vid that was building a budget 1000hp 1uz. He also used arp head studs but used standard bolts where the scissor gear are. What’s your thoughts on this
I think buying a set of ARP head studs and then using stock head bolts in the middle is a silly idea. I would much prefer having studs with all the same clamping force and stretch characteristics. The clearance issue are very easy to overcome. Cheers Kelvin
This was super informative thank you. I figured MLS head gasket required machine shop for 1UZ. I'm thinking it's about time for new head gaskets for my 250mi 93' SC400 but I'm not 100% sure. She might be burning oil but I know it's leaking it. Other than that it runs awesome and the oil isn't coffee and the coolant isn't miracle whip. I want to turbo my SC400 at some point too. On that note, I heard the stock ECU can handle up to 8psi- is that true?
The stock ecu tune was very rich in the higher throttle / higher load settings and had very conservative timing so many people have used them in boosted situations. Some guys are successful and I also se heaps of guys which try and fail as it isn't ideal. I prefer to use an aftermarket ecu when I modify an engine outside factory parameters. Cheers Kelvin
Do not go out and buy ARP Celica/Corolla head studs, as you called them. 203-5407 are actually MAIN studs from a Celica/Corolla that work as head studs on a 1UZ. Do not make the mistake I made guys! I bought the head studs for a celica/corolla and they are 50mm too long.
