Very nice and clear demonstration, straight to the point and precise. Thank you so much!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! Yeah I do try to keep my videos to the point. There's always so much to share and it can be hard sometimes knowing what's too much info vs what needs a deeper dive. Hopefully I can do a good job at distinguishing the two 😄, and the feedback has been helpful for me in that regard.

Good video. From what I have concluded the 1Zpresso Pro is the best bang for the buck. It sets a high bar. It seems some others have adopted the same burr-set but have not performed as well

Yeah, 1Zpresso is doing some really great things in the hand grinder market. I agree, best bang for the buck! I'm still not sure I know all the ins and outs of the JX Pro and I'm learning new things all the time from the many others who use it on the daily.

I recently bought a JX-Pro and came across your video a few days ago but had not commented. The cleaning was a bit of a pain due to static. I now use this method and has been working flawlessly every day. Regarding the grinder itself, I had a TimeMore C2 for a short time and ended up returning it due to the materials (some plastic). But I have to say it seemed like grinding required less effort with it. I know it does not make sense since this one has bigger burrs, etc, Of course I do not have them both to compare side by side, but from memory it feels that way.
@erikbebeh
@erikbebeh 3 года назад
Bigger burrs = more beans in contact at anyone point, therefore more effort required. Does not take into account burr geometry and the length of the grinder handle, which acts as a lever.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
What Erikbebeh says makes sense to me, especially the point about there being multiple factors. On the plus side I'm guessing the JX-Pro is a faster grind, so hopefully that makes up for it.
@FER_R
@FER_R 3 года назад
@@davidmaurice1294 it does. I did not know that. And really, that is more an observation than a complaint. Thanks for the explanation @Erikbebeh.

Yeah, I just started spraying my beans prior to grinding and wow, retention reduced to about 0.2-0.4g!
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
Awesome! Yeah, I do that now with all my grinders. It definitely helps! I also try to do a better job of staying on top of cleaning/maintenance. People caution about moisture in the grinder. I'm pretty confident that the little amount we add is not detrimental, but it never hurts to be careful.
@slpardee10
@slpardee10 3 года назад
I do basically the same thing but use a wetted spoon instead of a spray. Just shake the excess water off the spoon and stir the beans for a few seconds. Works great.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
Yeah, I think that's a good, consistent way to control the amount of water you're using. I may switch to doing that eventually but for now I'm sticking to spraying. You wouldn't think this, but the spray is currently more convenient for me with the setup I have. That will hopefully change down the road.

Really nice trick. Won't it hurt the burr in long term ?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
I think you're right to be cautious, and I haven't been doing this enough to know the effects long term. But with everything I've read/seen the consensus is that it shouldn't shorten the lifetime of the burrs as long as it's not too much moisture. Most (or all) of the excess should evaporate with grinding and regular cleaning/maintenance should keep things safe for your burrs.

Doesn't even 1zpresso strongly advise against this? Also I may consider bearing damage.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
@@sluive3228 They actually recommend RDT to eliminate static (see their FAQ page), but also caution to not to create excessive moisture. So basically you should be careful with the amount of spraying. I'd also recommend regular cleaning (e.g. monthly) since it's pretty easy to disassemble.

You're welcome. I appreciate the feedback! I hope to produce a couple more in the near future. One that covers a complete breakdown and additional tips, and another one about grounds distribution and a comparison with my other grinders. Hopefully that will be enough to complete the series.

@@davidmaurice1294 i got 1zpresso for the grind consistency, but it seems like comandante has more consistent. have you checked out comandante before?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
@@arthurzetes I haven't evaluated the consistency in any detailed way yet. Anecdotally, I did notice that I get less fines than with my Baratza Encore. I do plan on doing another video at some point about grind distribution and comparing the JX-Pro with my other grinders in rotation (Encore & Ceado E5P). The JX-Pro is my only hand grinder at the moment (I do have a brass Turkish grinder, but I don't count that). I did consider the Comandante, but at the time it seemed hard to come by. Saw a review of the JX-Pro and opted for that. Even now the Comandante is out of stock for the distributors in my region (USA). And maybe that all speaks to your point. It's definitely a highly regarded machine. I may still get my hands on a C40 eventually, but it also seems like the hand grinder space is exploding recently and there are many good choices out there now. I ended up pledging for the ARCO grinder on Kickstarter. It says each click adjusts by only 3 microns, which is pretty amazing on a hand grinder (JX-Pro is 12-13 which is not too shabby either). Maybe I'll do a comparison video in the future.

if what is retained is mostly fines, then for pour over would retention be considered favorable so that those fines aren't included in the coffee bed that will be brewed?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
I think that's a good point when it comes to pour overs. You'd probably want to watch for those retained fines migrating into your next cup though. But with hand grinders, it's pretty easy to just use something like an air blower (from a camera cleaning kit) to clean it out after each grind.

I have a JX-Pro coming and I look forward to receiving it as my current grinder struggles with espresso. I notice your scale has unlabeled buttons. Is that to confound anyone who tries to borrow it? :)
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
Maybe it's my sub-par video quality 😅! There are labels, it's just hard to see as they're just indentations on the button. They're actually pretty easy to see in person, just not coming through that well here. Here's the link to the actual product: www.amazon.com/dp/B01E6RE3A0

Ok. My retention and static is WAY worse than this. Whyyyyyyyy?!?!
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 Год назад
It could be due to lack of humidity. I tend to have more static in the winter than summer. If you're not already using RDT (spritz of water on the beans before grinding) you can see if that helps. Also darker roasts will tend to have more static than lighter roasts, so it could be the beans as well. Best of luck.
@chupie
@chupie Год назад
@@davidmaurice1294 I keep my humidity between 40-50% (instruments in the apartment) though it can vary fairly widely in areas except where the instruments are. I do use dark roast. I do use the rdt when I remember to. I do need to clean it. I just have to steal up the nerve to finally disassemble it. I’m pretty terrified I’ll screw out up.

Water is not good for the materials from which the grinder is made. Very bad advice.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
First of all, thank you for your comment. And I do appreciate the fact that you're trying to look out for others. From what I've found, there's strong consensus around RDT as being an acceptable practice. 1Zpresso even recommends it in their FAQ page. So I don't share as strongly a concern as you do. But folks should do their own research and decide for themselves, so thanks for the counter argument.
