Black smoke should be a sign of unburnt fuel. So either stuck injector or a dead coil

I agree, however the comment was based on what the previous owner had described when the engine failed. I had no prior knowledge about the engine, nor was I involved in troubleshooting it when it was running. The engine has been dismantled and inspected since, and in this case, the valve seals were blown on the third cylinder, and also a crack on the turbo housing.
