No bloody ways !! I owned 5 Land Rovers in my life - compared to what you (up for a two-wheeel drive award) have just done with Kombi, there is no comparrison. Landies lose hands down !! What size motor do you have in the Kombi ? I am impressed is a complete understatement. Hats off to Maxine - never a serious or even semi-concerned face - just smiles and laughter. True winner. Allow me to be selfish - do not stop what you guys are doing, absolutely amazing and entertaining.! My very best and go "safely" - am right behind you .. .. .. LOL LOL

Yep, the big thing to learn about Kombi driving is there are places where you just have to give them stick and keep the revs high. They LOVE a bit of rough treatment.
My wife and I took off across the country 30 years ago in a 73 Westfalia camper...2.0 litre flat motor. I also owned a 1600 72 "low light" before that. We got a lot of looks and comments where we took it and even towed other ppl out of dodge a cpl times. The secret is the weight over the rear end, gives great traction. Despite many fond memories, never again...I worked on that damn van almost daily....luckily I'm a qualified mechanic and VW nutter (in remission).

12:15 I used to go to a fishing spot near Rockhampton years ago, and to get to was a small, black soil hill that had to be negotiated. I was there camping one weekend and watched 3 4WDs have to take two shots at the hill to get up. I had had a couple of Cooper's and decided to jump in my Kombi. I drove it up the hill, past the 4WDs, turned around and drove back down again...It was a fun day. Oh, if you look for the Layland Brothers Kombi on the web, my Kombi was the same colour with the same pop-top, but the model prior to theirs.
We went to the Cape in 1991 and a Kombi travelled up and back with us, had extra clearance and had no trouble at all, we were geared up to help them if needed, but didn't need to
Wife and I had a 2 seater Hilux, then came children, so the Hilux went for a wagon. Then I was issued a Nissan Urvan as a work vehicle, (additional seating added for children) by company I worked for. We quickly discovered how capable this vehicle was off-road also. It had a really low 1st gear allowing us to transverse stuff I'm sure it was never designed to do. We'd go many places, 4wders would say, you won't get to that place in that, guess what we did just as you are. Many vehicles, many years later, my now adult children still reflect on the adventures in the Urvan. And yes, it turned up ready for work on a Monday morning, all washed, undamaged ready for another week of lugging office furniture and equipment around. However, we eventually ended up back in the world of 4WD vehicles, been along the entire teletrack a couple of times now, but the Urvan memory's came flooding back watching this, Thanks for the memories, must show the kids, grandkids also. Bloody awesome guys. Seeing this takes me back to our days travelling around OZ in our 74 Kombi. Doing similar shit, signs saying 4WD only, road closed etc. just keep the valves adjusted and the oil temp low. Go the Kraut.
Great trip guys. The Kombi sure did the job. Memories of my trip in T30 X Trail in 2015 but mainly on the Development Road. Still regret not doing Fruit Bat Falls on way back. Great fun watching your postings. 😁
My brother and I had a Baja Bug and kept up with mod trends. One thing was a rubber distributor cap. It still had six holes, but fit snugly around distro and wires.

I just had a thought that may help you with cooling the Kombi. My father added some rubber-type extensions to the engine air inlets at the back of the Kombi. It seemed to help get more air through those vents. Imagine cupping your ear with your hand to hear better. That sort of shape. Maybe it's an idea you could use.

You are living proof that you don't need to spend big bucks to have fun and great adventures. When I was in my early thirties (now 65) I did a number of trips with a Sydney 4WD club in my bog standard Lada Niva. On one trip there was a fully kitted out Troopie (turbo, front and rear air lockers, lift kit, the works) who had to be winched out of a creek crossing that my Lada didn't even struggle with. the owner of the Troopie was not impressed.

Really enjoyed that as I've a bit of similar stuff in an 86 Suzuki Swift GTi across the Gulf. Does the Kombi have an LSD as it seems to handle the track better than my front wheel drive, especially uphill where FWD suffers. That sort of punishment must lead to many breakages and repairs - can you list what the more serious have been? Is the vehicle legally registered as I don't think it would pass a NSW rego check! Don’t let the patina fool you !!! A mechanically well maintained kombi will get you through just about anything Deep water may stop you but the rough stuff will be just eaten up
@@kris8742 the VW engine trans package with the weight right over the wheels is the key … The kombi had a reduction hub from memory Same thing as a hummer The drive goes in above the axle centreline And has reduction gears in the hub Gears them lower ( less top speed) But great off road , and increases clearance as drive goes into top of the wheel assembly
