**VIDEO NOTES** - *Amendment:* I failed to mention it in this video, but the founders of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor were also responsible for helping cleanse the lands of plague alongside the Yaksha. I should have at least name-dropped them there, but I didn't because whenever WFP comes up I go on very long theoretical tangents. We'll talk about WFP in another vid, promise. Same for the Exorcists of Liyue. (truthfully, while we do have Hu Tao and her whole quest to go on, I still don't feel like I know enough about the plagues that time OR the Exorcists.) - *Correction:* I was unaware of this prior to releasing the video, but some of you in the comments pointed out that there's a translation error in regards to Azhdaha's discovery. I placed him at around 2,600 years ago, but some of you said that in CN he should have been found closer to 3,700 years ago. I CANNOT FIND A SOURCE FOR THIS so if you have one, please @ me.
Hey so uh this isn't to do with the video, sorry, gonna seem a little random but I didn't know how else to message you. But a good few months ago I kinda made a big stink in a comment of one of your live stream vods about your view on Thoma and I just wanted to apologize for that. My behavior was unacceptable and , not to try and defend it but just as a point of explanation, I have issues with anger that have been getting steadily worse alongside my trying to cope with other issues and sometimes I let it get the better of me. Tryi8ng to work on it. But anyway , again I'm sorry for acting like a jerk and just want to say I genuinely do really enjoy your content. I know a crazy amount of work must go into making them I'm sure some random guy giving you a hard time about something meaningless is the last thing you're wanting to put up with.
Btw ain't during 2022 Lantern Rite, Zhongli said he wasn't the one bestowed Azhdaha with sight of something like that? I don't really remember but he did say not everything the story teller said were true
I know it’s a bit reductive since this video is about all of Liyueto, but Morax threatens to be one of my favourite characters in fiction. I’d gladly watch a movie about him going from young “meat-head” Morax to the wise lead adepti we know as Zhongli. There’s a real character arc there, and even a dark side as well.
You know, I’d argue he’s still a little bit of a meathead with his rambling! I think a lot of his wisdom and knowledge was gained with age. He’s more like a living book than an analytical genius
@@ollieisarat I definitely agree but I also feel like he has mastery over his knowledge and knows where to draw the line. He also learns from his own story and that’s how he became to be the balanced soft and well spoken Zhongli the people of Liyue (and us) know today. Maybe I’m biased tho, I do love this character a lot
I think that the Archon Quest of Liyue doubles as both our introduction to Liyue as well as a Memorial to Guizhong. My headcanon is that after the dust settled and the people of Liyue came to Mourn Rex Lapis's "Death" Zhongli attended the Rite of Parting to Mourn Guizhong, he used his alter Ego as Funeral Advisor and Director to arrange the Rite such that it would seem like a one dedicated to Rex Lapis, but in reality, he meant it to be for Guizhong.
There's a teaser about Guizhong, Cloud Retainer and Madame Ping relationship. It shows their youthful human form and how to interact with one another. To which Guizhong was to Zhongli like what Makoto was to Ei. Zhongli was the warrior who do all the fighting while Guizhong was like the brain of the operation with all the tactics, which was exactly how Makoto was to Ei. And not too much surprise, both Makoto (Ei's older sister) and Guizhong died cause they ventured into battle with the very little strength they had, both Zhongli and Ei failed to protect their tactical partner and was both immensely personality changed by that same failure
I'd just like to point out, "Adeptus" is the singular, "Adepti" is the plural. I also see this mistake when people talk about "-oculus" and "-oculi", Anemoculus, Geoculus, Electroculus, etc.
5:44 Based on what the recent archon quest with Makoto, I believe that we'll also help Zhongli open the memory of dust. Hopefully. I can't imagine the Zhongli eroding and not being able to open that. His story is already so painful so I think this will either be a bittersweet closure or just a truly depressing event/story. I AM SO HERE FOR IT.
Ah Liyue... history so fragmented that it was referenced in Zhongli's first story quest. How erosion and people often warp the records of history. Kinda surprised you don't reference the fact that the Hu clan/Wungsheng Funeral Parlour were the ones responsible for quelling the plagues while the Yaksha dealt with the dead gods and curses. I think its note worthy because Zhongli chose to work for them most likely because of their history, capability of working with the supernatural and their sense of boundaries. But I understand that its diving into the more comprehensive/specific side of history rather than general history. Just thought there was a lack of acknowledgement on the human contributions on the history of Liyue like the Exorcists and the Millileth.
Yeah I thought about it. In the end I decided not to because I couldn't find a good way to include it without straying heavily into theory territory. In hindsight, I probably should have at least mentioned they were involved even if I didn't go into detail about what that entailed.
at the start when u assumed that the old liyue harbour was most likely at the current harbour's location. i think there's also reason to speculate that old liyue harbour could have been further inland. in the liyue section of the teyvat travel guides, Alice had speculated that jueyun karst was initially submerged underwater (suggesting that zhongli had raised the earth in some form). Zhongli, who was accompanying her as a guide through jueyun karst, didn't confirm or deny this speculation but alice's recounting of the event suggests he was at least amused by Alice's statement. just something to think about :) I love ur videos!! thank you for all the great lore content
@@Zarozian yea i understand i just thought it might interesting to discuss it in the comments if anyone else had extra things they could bring up about this topic :)
@@kazooboi8001 a lot of lisha is still submerged to this day, but there's reason to believe that hydrological basin was submerged, but current Liyue's harbor area wasn't at the same time, most likely due to some God's actions or activities at the time
Lisha is such a strange region, but part of why I put in the assumption about "Old" Liyue Harbor is because the Guili Assembly specifically says it stretched from Mt. Tianheng to Stone gate. If they wanted to include the Lisha area, they would have said like, from the CHASM to stone gate. And if that was Morax's old settlement, then why abandon it later? Seems weird. Not impossible by any means, but it does feel weird and wouldn't explain why the original followers of Morax went to sea so often.
Correction: There were more yakshas than only the 5 you mentioned. We met one of them, Pervaces. The 5 yakshas you mentined were the top5, the very best of the best.
awesome video! i’d like to point out that adeptus is a title given to one that has made a contract to protect Liyue, with Rex Lapis. It isn’t a category of beings, like illuminated beasts or dragons. Ganyu is half human, half qilin, but she is still an adeptus since she made a contract with Rex Lapis. I believe her “adeptal lineage” talked about in her story quest is a mistranslation, and references more her illuminated beast side. This is similar to how Yanfei’s father is an adeptus, but Yanfei is not, since she hasn’t made a deal with Rex Lapis, but she’s still half-illuminated beast. And through her work as a lawyer, she’s considered an “honorary adeptus” to some. Qiqi uses adeptal arts, techniques used by illuminated beasts and adepti, but she is not considered one herself. It’s a little bit confusing, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Morax is the “Prime of the Adepti” because he is the leader, and the Archon, the most important protector of Liyue.
Yeah this is kind of the issue with the English translation. IMO, it's a lot easier to convey the concept of "adepti" than "illuminated beast" so I went with the former. Ultimately you are right, it is just a title.
Memory of Dust "This is the mark of our pledge, and it is also my challenge to you." "All my wisdom is hidden within this stone dumbbell." He remembers meeting the young woman with the billowing sleeves, remembers the way she acted solemn, yet seemed joyful when she presented him this token. What a silly notion. There was no formal contract between them. They were merely two people walking the same path for their own reasons... But he remembers the scene of their first meeting anyway, when the Glaze Lilies were still in abundant bloom. He also remembers those words she spoke at the end - again, amid the Glaze Lilies. "Those little people are as small and fragile as dust." "Because they are so small, they know not when they will lose their lives to disaster or strife, and so they are afraid." "Because they are afraid, they try so hard to become more intelligent. This I understand." "So I thought that since there is such a gulf between us in strength, I should use technique and wisdom instead." "With your brawn and my brains, this city would surely become a great one." Her final smile was a lonely one, even as her form dissolved into the finest dust. "It seems that our journey together has come to an end. As for that stone dumbbell, forget about it, would you?" "This is the mark of our pledge, and it is also my challenge to you." "All my wisdom is hidden within this stone dumbbell." "If you can unlock it-" Many years passed, and he was never able to unlock that dumbbell, nor would he ever learn what might have followed that sentence. Over the years, the wild Glaze Lilies, too, dwindled till at last they were no more.
I just realized something and thank you so much for your Mondstatd, and Liyue Lore summaries that I saw a parallel between Decarabian and Havria. Both wanted to protect their people, by their own ways but these people they had cherished eventually killed them back. I just can't fault the two gods doing those things such as creating a wind barrier or creating an underground city, they really meant good will so seeing how they ended up, I just feel sad. I think until now Decarabian is still a Tyrant King from Mondstatders while Havria had her small peace from her remaining believers but on the wrong perspective.
When you mention long slumber, I'm thinking about the twin sibling slumber. Did they lost their memories too while in sleeping state? Is she/he sacrificing herself/himself before? (like maybe on their previous journey or maybe thing that already happen in Teyvat timeline -maybe they did something in Tyvat history which resulted one of them asleep). I'm still wondering why they could wake up at the same time that Khaen'riah being attacked and planning to leave Teyvat. We're already at Inazuma and going to Sumeru soon, but this is how much information we got about the twin's story, just an itty-bitty sized.
You are by far my favorite youtuber to listen to on my drives to work, from work, and anytime I’m heading somewhere that is like more than an hour of a drive. Keep up the amazing content!
Loved this! Liyue is my favorite region. So happy that you were able to fill in my spotty ingestion of the game's lore. Idk why but I've always been drawn to Guizhong and the history of the Guili Plains. Definitely meant more of that. Keep up the amazing work!
Imagine having a teacher half of fun and interesting as Ashikai back in the days... man you would have a very swell brain by now XD Love you, keep it up!
I love how you deliver the story, especially the "name your government with your number1 ship" thingies LOL 😂 and the Rex Incognito at the point of Morax getting his resolve
Hey this is super off topic but, have you ever noticed the bard girl that wears strange clothes in Mondstadt? When you ask if she's seen anyone that looks like you, she gives a really interesting answer.
@@mxxnsmelxdy I only noticed her this week so I don't know if she's always been here or not her name is Sansa and she stands outside of the goth hotel near the fountain.
It mostly like not lore related reasons. There's this conspiracy theory that the devs made lots of last minute changes that seems to contradicts lore. for example: freedom sworn sword lore is about monstastd while being Kazuha's BiS weapon, yet aesthethically it suits Jean more and was mostly likely made for her but was changed last minute when they realised Kazuha won't have his weapon released with him. It's tinfoil hat theory kind of theory but it makes so much sense when you piece things that don't seem to make sense lore wise together. I recommend watching both tenten and braxophone video on this. They delve deeper into the topics. Tenten's video title: Viral CN conspiracy theory and Braxophone's is: CN has a theory.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I'm having a lot of fun going over your content! These beginner's guides are really useful to those of us who enjoy the story and like to see it depicted in a more linear way, so really looking forward to the new ones, as new regions come along! I've particularly enjoyed the attention you put to the original Chinese text, as that really helps keep the story true to how it was intended! So thanks! :)
[SPOILERS?] Zhongli spoke of Qiaoying Village in northwest Liyue (apparently famous for its tea industry) in Mondstadt's most recent event, and the fact that we can't seem to go that far yet (best we can do are the wetlands west of Qingce) would all but confirm that expansions after the Chasm are in the works for Liyue (likely in the leadup to Fontaine, but that's a ways off).
Would there be any chance that the Lisha province may potentially be remnants of the Lunar Moon Palaces? I’m saying this because wasn’t the book (Moonlight Bamboo Forest?), which mentioned the palaces and the seelie was, sort of located in Liyue? This is just a random thought with very little possibility haha 😂 Just a throwaway thought here
Fantastic video! I’m really excited to explore The Chasm and learn even more about Liyue’s history, but hopefully it won’t change too much and make Ashikai’s head spin again.. oh who am I kidding of course it will!😅
I love this series and waiting for Inazuma one. So I know it didn't relate to this video but there is something I discovered out of no where. Did you know you can draw Perfectly liyue characters' constellations on liyue Waypoints? Seriously you can draw xiao constellation from his inn. if your Teyvat world theory is correct, the star are fruits of the world tree and so does the the constellation and you can draw constellation on waypoint then the waypoint serve as the holder of the fruit, the long rod that keep the fruit not to fall, for this case the waypoint serve to hold the stars or constellation. There's a star event in 1.1 and the follow up in 1.3 in The quest" We'll be reunited" There's a stolen archon statue which might be served as the stars older. since it's stolen,it cannot control the stars, and then stars falls. But stars fell first in 1.1,and the stolen statue in 1.3 which is not in order ,i don't know why.
Amazing video !! Zhongli's evolution is quite incredible I have a question tho, do you think it would be possible for azdaha to be one of the seven dragon sovereigns the primordial one fought against, or one their heirs (like the baptismal vishaps) ? Would it be a stretch to assume that?
Zhongli has gone through so much, and it’s why he remains to be my favorite character ever. He doesn’t fall into trauma- he may have gone through much grief, but he doesn’t give into it.
adepti is the plural noun, the singular is 'adeptus' (xiao introduces himself as adeptus xiao) and adeptus is a title held by illuminated beasts that have a contract with morax. similarly, 'yaksha' is a job title not a species (despite its rl origin as a type of nature spirit). omitting the important role of the hu family and wangsheng funeral parlour in combating the plagues during and after the war is a bit disappointing too because it's one example we have of humans being proactive rather than just being led around by the gods. I also don't 100% agree with your placement of azhdaha in the timeline but this comment is getting long enough lol. nitpicks aside, this isn't bad. fairly coherent and digestible. 👍
Valid critique on the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. You're not the only one to bring it up. Whenever they come up I fall into theory hell so I left them out. In hindsight I should have at least mentioned them... I think we'll get more information on them in an upcoming patch though. At that point it'll be neat to do a deep dive into their lore specifically and then point out when on this timeline they slot in and what their contributions were. As for Azhdaha, someone else has pointed out that there's a translation error I wasn't aware of that puts Azhdaha a lot farther back. I haven't seen the error yet myself, but I will put out a correction if it really does change things.
making a corrected version of this video, and I will make sure to include them this time. Just because they send me into a theory spiral, doesn't mean they should be excluded here.
Thank you for losing your sanity over this for us 🙏 Also, would it have been possible that the ocean levels were higher during the time of old Liyue? That would allow for the placement of old Liyue to be further inland. Since morax is commonly involved in terraforming, “quelling the seas” could also be a reference to lowering the level to what is seen as of the current time
Yeah it's possible, but I can't find evidence for it (right now). We know the Lisha region was flooded at one point during the Archon war but that's kinda it.
I'll be calling Morax the brawny meathead instead from now on xD Guili power couple let's gooooooo Jeez now I feel even more sad about Zhongli now no wonder he sounds so tired all the time, poor grandpa Something I love about Liyue is it's as much a reflection of Morax as it is of its people in all its layers. Unlike Inazuma where Raiden's story happens in isolation from her nation. And similar to Zhongli there's still a tonne of history to discover.
If you want to know how many Adepti were in Morax's Legion at the prime of his conquest here is a fun fact for you. After the war ended most of the Adepti asked Morax to turn them into Stone Statue so that they could see Liyue grow and develop for eternity. All the animal statues we see around Liyue are Adepti who asked to be turned in Statues. On top of that there were countless that fell in battle. Though only a few of the battles are mentioned.Several hundreds might even be a thousand battles that took place over the soil of Liyue.
Thank you so much for making this! It takes so much effort to compile Genshin lore, especially from a nation as rich as Liyue. Many thanks especially for including the sources, I'll be sure to reference those in the future. I truly appreciate all of the work you put into this, it's so useful and comprehensible!
Thanks a lot for the video! I definitely have fun watching imagining you are adult Paimon giding us into Teyvat history (^_^) is nice to have this quick recap to keep track of what is coming in the game in near future.
Do you think Yanfei knows this stuff, being part adeptis and all, or did her dad just not tell her about world history? Like how much does acctually know?
Isn't there anything about the adepti Sea Gazer, Sky bracer, Yan fei's father who is still alive, Guhua, etc... ? Also do you know what kind of power the adepti use, that golden aura i mean. Which seems to be the same that the soldiers were shooting from theirs Ballistas?
I don't know if this is weird speculation, or unrelated, but I think of Alatus "eating the dreams of those he conquered", to be a flowery way of talking about an old Vision Hunt Decree. Assuming that it works the same way as we've seen in Inazuma, that dreams=ambitions, and that somehow, stealing Visions gives Alatus a synesthetic taste of "sweetness".
I'm not sure about that. Eating dreams are cited as the reason he likes almond tofu, and xiao DOES have dream-based adeptal skills that we get to see in his quest. I'm not entirely sure what eating a dream would entail, but I think it's pretty safe to say he literally eats them.
You know what, from your previous stream, I kinda expect this video to come way later than this because all of the complaints you said about Liyue lore! But the video seems ok since it's a "beginner's guide" 👍 Sometimes seeing how scattered Liyue lore makes me glad that Inazuma is much easier to map out (not including Enkanomiya and the events preceding its descent). Unrelated but the fact that in Enkanomiya we found a ghost of a Jibashiri who fought a Ruin Guard 2000+ years ago, and the fact that we can find a Ruin Hunter(?) at Guizhong's domain... Just how advanced was Khaenri'ah, even all those millenia ago?
Yeah... sooooo... that's part of time being fucked up lmao Cuz Guizhong's domain woulda been around over 3,700 years ago. If she was studying them back then, then... then.... sigh
“Guoba is a god life is strange that way” great quote Ashikai. is this a quote though? i don’t want know because i can’t remember what is the definition of quote
Early gang! Awesome lore video!!! I def understood it all clearly and im fully caught up on it now. Still wanna know if the missing yaksha will ever return or is confirmed dead
I like to think that Morax's stone spears that he pinned Osial with were actually more like giant hands. This might be a crazy theory but I feel like each of the Archon's bursts are tied to outerspace in some way. Raiden cuts reality around her and reveals the starry sky with each slash of Musou Isshin. Morax pulls meteors down from Outer Space through golden divine portals. Venti's Burst, while being made of wind, resembles a black hole pretty closely. I wonder if they'll continue this motif with the other Archon's bursts.
I love videos like these because they gather all the scattered lore bits Genshin has into a nice, easily digestible pile. Thanks so much for making them! Although for some reason I’m thinking about the Yakshas being super-scary, ancient Chinese Power Rangers now
Very great video! Liyue is my favorite region so most of this is familiar to me but this was a great refresher (not to mention its nice to have a timeline)👍 Inazuma is a region I can't really wrap my head around lore-wise so I'm really excited for your video on that!
I think it was mentioned in Zhongli's history that Venti and him used to meet regularly during the period between the Archon War and roughly 500 years ago. (Possibly with the other original archons) So when Venti met Xiao and saved him, it might have been while he was coming back from an Archon meeting
Have you ever talked about the fact that all katherynes are 100% a robot and how???? I really wanna know lol, now is fact if you stay near them for too long they say ...error... ...rebooting... What is this world that they fight with swords but we have robots that are exactly like humans and no one can even tell...shogun too but she is not AI she is a person inside a doll that funny enough covers all her joints maybe she literally has doll joints all her mid body is covered her neck arms and legs katheryne too she cover all possible joints Wtf is this world is a post apocalyptic futuristic nation that got so broke they were send back to the medieval times again...I have so many questions lol
I wonder how the Chasm event from 2.7 ties into this. The event suggests that the nameless yaksha, Bosacius, appeared and helped Morax during the cataclysm. Was he somehow revived or did he never die?
Watched both your Guide to Mondstadt and Liyue videos. Very well done. I enjoy the lore and they helped clarify some doubts. Thank you. You’ve got a new subscriber.
