‘Ive had some people tell me that I brush my paper too much. I don’t.’ 🤣 You tell ‘em Steve. If those people have a different method, let them set up their own channel and stand by it with effort and vulnerability themselves. Meantime, you do you. Gave me such a giggle!

I have one but it doesn't get much use. I am trying to teach myself how to paint landscapes so it might get some use finally. Your video was timely for me! I love the work of Australian artist John Lovett. He puts gouache around the outer areas of his watercolor paintings to soften everything and push it back to increase attention on the focal point. He uses a hake brush to soften away the edges of the gouache.

Thanks for another great tutorial that teaches a technique that eventually all watercolorists will need to master. Since I allow my dog into my studio, I couldn't help but feel your frustration as the bristles kept falling out of the brush. Some time ago I watched a tutorial on ridding the shedding issue associated with hake brushes: After washing the brush and pulling out as many of the loose hairs as possible and then letting the brush dry completely, the artist then took super glue and applied it just below the ferrule (or stitched area) and went completely around the ferrule making sure that just enough of the glue was used to get to the center of the bristles and then let it dry. I gave it a try and it worked for me. Hopefully you will find this tip useful as well. P.S. Hot press paper really is a different animal. 😉
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 года назад
Yes, I've seen the super glue recommendation. However I think that a lot of the shedding is breakage and not the hair coming loose. Mostly because the shed hairs are not full length.

Hi! In a book I saw the following method: you prepare a good amount of paint, apply a brush stroke on the top and in the next you will add more water to the mixture. It seems a little more laborious but produces a more homogeneous result.

Your 2-inch brush looks so nice. Thanks for the tips, I don't have enough large brushes. I try to do gradients with the mop and I never get a good result. I never think of large brushes for watercolour, don't know why! And another good tip about the blotting rags! Interesting about the cold vs hot press paper.

My Stonehenge cold press & hot press blocks split when I did this. I've also had the same thing ocurr with my larger Arches hot press blocks. The thing is, I live in the desert where it hits 121°+ in the summer. I'm pretty sure the glue on my blocks was experiencing issues prior. The heat is great for drying, even for glazing oils, but sad for glued blocks & impossible for sculpting clay. I've had a lot of trouble with canvases warping too. I try to do everything without stretching my paper. I'd have to use my bathtub. I'm incredibly patient when it comes to absolutely everything but stretching watercolor paper. 😂 I've been eyeballing the stretching kit you have previously shown as well as the Keba offered by Jackson's, but it's not something I absolutely need at this time.

Yep, the Hake is great for washes, colorful sunsets and the correct twirl/movement combo creates storm clouds but the darn shedding - worse than my cats . My brushes are cheap ($4.99) and they still shed so I don't like 'em yet - I hope the shedding lessens with more use. There are better brands out there and perhaps they shed less but I'm not sure. Stay well.

For gradients I use an airbrush with watercolor, gouache, or acrylic. For watercolors I make my own paints using pigments from Kremers and an aquazol binder, also from Kremers. I personally think brushes are old technology, but they have their uses for certain effects. With an airbrush you can use a great number of quality papers, so aren't limited to the very expensive watercolor papers.

One of the reasons I appreciate your channel is you help me choose before I buy. What do you think about 300 lb paper that is half the price of other brands. It can’t be 100% cotton, but if it’s externally sized, and has good reviews, maybe I will have less issues, what are your thoughts on painting on 300 pound paper if it’s not cotton or internally sized. Thank you!
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 года назад
Cotton simply acts different than wood pulp paper and handles water better. It really has more to do with that than with the weight or the sizing.

Hi Steve, I'm fairly new to Mind of Watercolour. I love what you do and I'm starting with all the basic videos. I have a question about stretching the paper. If you don't stretch and you get buckling, can you take the buckling out for frame somehow?

How do you touch the paper and not have greasy marks on it after? I have to wear gloves when handling my paper or I have patches of paper that the pigment won't stick to properly

I think the hairs can be just brushed off when the paper is dry, yes?
@indigodande4345

I have a hard time doing a border on my watercolor with tape because when i wet it after the tape doesnt stay (for obvious reasons) but one lady did her tape, made sure there was no air underneath, wetted her paper with a big brush like the hake and then used a blow dryer which was key to drying the whole thing at once to help prevent the buckling. im thinking you could wet the paper let it expand and then let it dry enough to add paper after. thoughts?
@artetconscience
@artetconscience 4 года назад
Great technique! I'm curious, do you know why it's more difficult to work with a hot pressed paper (uneven gradation, visible brushstrokes and granulation) rather than a cold pressed one? Is detailed work the only advantage for hot pressed papers?
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 года назад
It's simply because of how smooth it is. Imagine painting on glass vs a board with raised wood grain (I'm exaggerating obviously). Glass streaks and shows brush marks terribly and everything sits on top. You get a much smoother application on a board with a little texture. Its a similar effect with paper. But hot press is really not that bad when dealing with smaller areas where washes are easier to control. These really large washes are the hardest to control. As for advantages, yes, details are crisper on hot press, yielding sharp crisp shapes and edges. Colors are a little more vibrant on hot press with less fading in the drying shift. Hot press is better for line work like pencil techniques or pen and ink technique where you need sharp crisp lines mixed with watercolor.

great video. 🙂 one nitpick (sorry!) is that hake, pronounced like cake, is a fish. hake, a japanese word (はけ), is pronounced 'hah-kay' i own a 2in hake specifically for gradient washes but god yes does it shed...
