Are we really talking about fitting into ridiculous body shape categories again in 2022? No needs to dress for their body shape. Wear what makes you feel good. Period. The end.
@vazq_Fernanda
@vazq_Fernanda 2 года назад
I asked my audience what videos they wanted me to make at the beginning of the year and overwhelmingly, I got requests about body shapes - so I delivered! If this is what my audience wants, that's what we will talk about. I will say that I don't get the sense that you watched the whole video, because I did address the issue of "ideal" body types (and there not being any) specifically.

right!! I was very surprised to see this come up in my feed... this is very outdated and really shouldn't have any relevance to what people should wear. It's stuff like this that makes people feel self conscious about their bodies

@Tiffany Michelle Yeah, because people are all different shapes and sizes. I know what makes me feel good and I wear it. But, I also know what I WISH felt good and I have no idea why it doesn't. Content that discuss shape in a benign way, like this one, provide insight into that for me. There are PLENTY of people that enjoy dressing for their shape and this video is for them. Excellent job, Fernanda, on such an objective, non judgmental, and relevant video.

My shape is rectangle but my measurements are pear. I know a lot of people think this info is only used to force someone into another shape, but really it has helped me figure out why off the rack clothes hang on me the way they do, and the sort of alterations I'd need to have them fit. Before I felt so lost and confused when garments in 'my size' didn't work. Turns out I just have different proportions from the fit model.
@VioletToadstool

Ooh that reminds me: it would be cool to see a video like "what clothes look like when they don't actually fit you". I got so frustrated with the supposedly ~universally flattering~ wrap dresses always looking awful on me, until I realized the manufacturers all assumed my waist was in a completely different place than it is. Once I got one that matched my torso length it actually looked good!

Hi Christine! I totally agree - at the end of the day all of these tricks are tools that you have for your wardrobe toolbox. Does that mean you use the same tool for every job? I found this helpful and non-judgemental - it's not saying that any type is better than any other. I looked through some beach photos taken from behind me, and finally I can see that *of course* some styles are just going to fall off my shoulders - they may be straight, but they're also narrow. It has taken me a long time to realise! Now I won't waste time trying certain things on or ordering online. So for me, this has been entirely practical and about comfort, not about trying to change how I look. Thank you, Fernanda. Today we have had snow, though, so I'm not going to be taking off clothes or measuring precisely.

Interesting. I like your approach : very respectful and neutral. I love your message about body shapes and of just understanding our bodies better to make informed decisions when choosing an outfit/buying a clothe. If we understands proportions and balance, visual "illusions" etc. then we can play with it to get the look we want based on our tastes and what makes us feel good and confident. :) I am curious to see how you will tackle each shape and the recommendations. By the way, I've seen your answers on other comments so I won't cheat and "try to guess" yours. I am somewhere between hourglass and pear. Definitely a pear from behind but I have a big chest. And proportionally, my torso is short. But I am short (1,50m/4"11) and mid-size anyway...

This Blew My Mind 🤯🤯 You are a genius!! I learned about body shapes last year and it has helped me SO much to know what silhouettes compliment me (and they were the ones I was always intuitively drawn to!) and it helped eliminate so much indecision when it came to choosing clothing. I’ve been able to put together outfit formulas because of knowing my body shape. I want to try your method though. Upon measuring myself last year, I discovered that I am a Rectangle, and knowing this has brought me so much peace. I don’t feel bad for my broad shoulders anymore. I realize they are an accent of my body shape and something to celebrate. And now I know why I love to put a belt on everything- it helps me define my waist, which tends to get lost and undefined, and it was cool to learn that the Duchess of Cambridge uses this technique as well!

Great video! I always find this type of information helpful, then I use what I can and discard the rest. I like the photo from the back, it takes the bust out of the outer shape! Thanks for acknowledging that shapes aren't better or worse or any nonsense like that. I'm hourglass especially if I include my shoulders over the bust measurement.

This was the best explanation of these shapes that I've heard so far! I'm still confused about what my shape would be though, because I fit two categories. My measurements are 39/33/27/37; I have broad shoulders, a flat chest and a round bottom. My shoulders are my biggest measurement (inverted triangle) but my hips are more than 5% bigger than my bust (pear). I look like an inverted triangle from the back, but I have to buy a larger size in bottoms than I do in tops. Basically, my 2D outline is different than my 3D measurements. And my 3D measurements defy logic. 😄

I'm between a rectangle and an hourglass now as my waist has thickened slightly with age!!! I like clothes that therefore cut in at the waist and give the hourglass effect back to me. I use belts to help! I am slightly short-waisted so I would love advice on how to lengthen my torso visually!
@vazq_Fernanda
@vazq_Fernanda 2 года назад
The short answer is - don't clutter your smallest part! If the torso is short, then make sure you don't clutter it with big jewelry, thick belts, large prints, etc. Scale is super important - so small to medium scale accessories and prints on the top half of your body would do best!
@elisa4620
@elisa4620 2 года назад
And also, vertical lines help to visually elongate. It can be done with patterns, but also with scarves, necklaces, open vests, open jackets, zippers, button lines, etc. :)

Thank you for sharing! I had a pear shape as a kid, before puberty. So tiny waist, but always hips. I also have a big curve in my back because of a medical diagnosis. My mom sewed my pants preteen and into my teens. She is a really good sewer, and I really liked it, and made my pants or skirts with a side zipper so I didn’t get the gape in the back. I have always had a “woman’s bump” on my stomach. No problem for me, and like seen at many women. Smaller as a kid, but always had a little bump below my tiny waist. Hitting puberty I got a clear hour glass shape, still very tiny waist, but very blessed in the front area. I did gain a lot of weight because of medication in my twenties, and loose it later both because getting of the medication and getting sick. I still have a small waist, but also extra skin and my bump. We did have a ladies night in my church wear we did measure and so on, and I am still a hour glass, but I need do dress around my extra layers and bump on lower stomach. Even at my widest on my stomach I am smaller then my hips. I use a lot of a line skirts, often high waisted, that is my go to. I know my “stomach issues” are known for many women that has loose weight, or have been pregnant, so it would have been nice to learn about how to dress the best for that. I have gotten some tips for “apple” shape, but it doesn’t fit the best. I do think I have some skills in dressing around it, because people have complimented my tiny waist after loosing weight, and the few that I have shown my actually stomach has been amazed, or even shocked about how much extra I have there. I do know that I could get it fixed, but I don’t care, I just dress around it, no problem, but I know this is a common thing, so some tips would be great. Thank you as always for sharing! Love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴

@AnaRodriguez-wn8qq

I think we should all wear whatever we want regardless of anything, and that it’s boring to always be “in-balance” or get as close to the “ideal” body shape as possible. But at the same time sometimes I wear something that seems like it would be super cute and then I just don’t feel comfortable in it or it feels off and it’s usually because the clothing is interacting with my proportions in a way I didn’t expect bc im not clear on my body shape. Tbh I’m still not super sure what my shape is. I think I’m an inverted triangle since my shoulders are much wider than my chest, waist, or hips. But I have wide thighs. The widest part of my thighs is almost as wide as my shoulders but that’s right below my crotch. What that means for me is that I often look balanced on top and bottom but I just look like I have extra short legs… which I guess I do but clothing usually emphasizes that. Especially the cool kid wide cropped high waisted jeans I’ve been wearing

I'm kind of in between - like everything else this is a spectrum and I don't fit squarely into one category - but I have noticed that I have to be careful with garments that have shoulder padding or embellishments because they do enhance my shoulders, and then I look even more like an inverted triangle - so the recommendations for inverted triangles have always done better for me. This is why it's helpful to know your shape! So you know why something may not be working.

Knowing your body shape can be very beneficial. It definitely explains to me why I am drawn to some things and not others. The one problem I have found is that there are VERY conflicting things on RU-vid as to what pants look best. I’m a rectangle. I tend to stick with skinny or more fitted jeans/pants or boot cut. But I have found a lot that tell me wide leg. Wide leg pants make me look like a rectangle.
@vazq_Fernanda
@vazq_Fernanda 2 года назад
I think it depend on the cut of the wide leg. What about a culotte, that has move volume toward the opening, as opposed to a straight wide leg?
@angelamelum4304

@@vazq_Fernanda culottes are the worst of the wide leg on me. I’m short so it just adds to that. Something I’ve learned since posting this is that I need to stop watching certain RU-vidrs. They are so stylish and know obviously a lot. However, it has made me continue a cycle that makes me self-conscious and uncomfortable because I was afraid to wear what I actually like. Since ignoring all that I’m feeling MUCH better. Confidence is the most important thing you can put on when it comes to style.

So true about great legs for Ovals. My grandmother was an oval and had the BEST, most amazing legs - best in the family, and would wear knee length pencil skirts and little heels to feature them 😆 Mum and I are pears, and our legs are just not the same 😆 Interestingly, mum and I have different measurements, she has no (flat) bottom, whereas I definitely do, but in 2D, both of us have wider hip bones than shoulders - so we wear similar but different fits. She looks and feels better in longer skirts, and I prefer midi (and am overwhelmed in maxi length) . Combination of knowing I'm a pear along with kibbe helps me be happier with clothes I buy, and waste less money on pieces that won't work ☺️
@appleanniebirth
@appleanniebirth 2 года назад
I'd say you're definitely somewhere between an inverted triangle and an hourglass. I've always thought I was probably an inverted triangle, but seeing the visual shape combined with measurements is really eye opening! My bust and hips are pretty close in measurement, and they're about 8 inches wider than my waist. But my shoulders are a good 3-4 inches wider than either my bust or hips! I'm a swimmer, so shoulders come with the territory, lol. I'm super curious to hear your thoughts on how to flatter an inverted triangle. I've known since I was a teenager that halter tops with spaghetti straps (or any spaghetti straps, really) aren't my favorite. I feel like a football player in them. But a halter top or racer back tank with thicker straps actually accentuate my shoulders nicely and show them to be an asset. Also, button up shirts, jean jackets, and things like that that are more structured in the shoulders are also tricky. If they fit my shoulders, they drape in a way that makes my torso look way wider than it actually is; if they fit my torso, I can't move my arms without feeling like I'll bust a shoulder seam. Thanks for the interesting video, Fernanda! I've been loving your content lately.

This is funny because HOC spends so much time advertising that they are different from other styling services because they don't do horizontal measurements or body shapes. Yes I've had a style consult at HOC. Gotta love honesty. HOC also does tell you there are ideal body shapes and they tell you that hips 2" larger than bust is the ideal and an hourglass not a pear. All of their advice is about getting you to appear ideal, balancing, just like every other style system.

Hi Fernanda and comment folks! Thank you so much for making this, this was extremely helpful. I’ve been convinced I’m a rectangle forever, and I’m 6’ tall so that has always felt like the style of dressing I’ve had to do out of necessity and lack of options. But I did my drawing, and it looks closest to the hourglass, despite me carrying a lot of my extra weight in my abdomen. My measurements were Shoulders: 44.5, Bust: 41, Waist: 37.5, Hips: 46 (my original measurement was 43 but I realized I took it at the wrong place when watching the video back). But given the measurement breakdown, I can’t decide if that’s closer to Triangle or Hourglass. Help?

I'd say you're closest to an hourglass figure with a nicely defined waist.

I have too much of a waist to be a rectangle - there is a big difference between my hips & waist!

@@vazq_Fernanda I’m confused 😕😬 I thought that by just looking at someone head on you can see a defined waist and hips, so if you’re not a rectangle then what are you? In the Kibbe system are u a soft gamine?
