2 Forgotten Donald Duck Games 

PK Out of the Shadows has an unfortunate reputation in the Paperinik fandom: see, back in the late 1990s Paperinik New Adventures (PKNA), a more modern remaining of the character Paperinik, was very popular, so much so Disney greenlighted a sequel, PK2, which wasn’t as popular due to its darker, more serialized story. As this was happening Disney saw the success of the first series had all over Europe and decided to introduce it to America, but there was a problem: PKNA was a continuation of 30+ years of Paperinik stories and readers needed to know at least the bare minimum about the character before reading it, and while European fans had no issues (Italian Topolino stories had been reprinted all over the world), so wasn’t for the American readers, who at the time weren’t able to read (legally) these stories since Disney didn’t give a shit about comics based on their proprieties. So they decided to make a two-step plan: make a videogame starring Paperinik and then make a “tie-in” comic book that would have continued the story of the game. Needless to say, it didn’t work: the game, which adapted the BARE MINIMUM OF WHAT WAS IN THE COMICS (not kidding, the comics have a large and varied cast of characters which do not even appear as a cameo in the game, possibly because they started working on it because they finalized the plot of the reboot) wasn’t the big hit they wanted and the reboot, called simply PK, was a flop that not only pissed off old fans (to make this reboot they cut short PK2 and forced the authors to end the series with a very rushed and unsatisfying ending) but failed to gain new ones since the new plots weren’t as engaging as the old ones and most old characters were rewritten in such an extreme way that they felt like cheap imitations of the “real” ones, plus it was never made available in America until 2007, when they were made available in the Disney Comic App in a way that omitted all secondary stories and bonus content that was necessary to understand the plot (plus the app itself closed after a single year). The failure of PK killed the Paperinik New Adventures franchise until the 2010s when a continuation of PK2 was finally released with the name Paperinik New Era.

Ok so brief, useless story about PK: It all started back in 1969. Disney comics are a huge thing in Italy, with the weekly magazine Topolino (Mickey's Italian name) going strong and Donald and Duckburg's denizens being breakthrough characters loved by millions. At one point, as a parody of at the time popular "criminal" comic book characters like Diabolik, Donald (or Paperino, as he's known in Italian) adopts the secret identity of Paperinik the Diabolical Avenger, with which he decides to take revenge through kind of immoral means. Stuff happens, and as the character becomes a great success he gradually shifts from borderline criminal to a parody of powerless crime fighting superheroes like Batman. So for many years we have Donald acting like his usual self during the day and fighting crime during the night helped by Gyro Gearloose's inventions, duking it out with the Beagle Boys, defending Uncle Scrooge's riches, battling one-off or reoccurring superpowered criminals etc. It's all in good fun, nothing particularly serious about it. Then 1996 comes. Paperinik is becoming stale and people aren't really that interested in him anymore. So, a bunch of Disney authors decide to launch a new series centered about him aptly named PKNA: Paperinik New Adventures. This series is set in an alternate continuity and borrows largely from American comic books, and it shows. It still keeps a relatively light Disney tone, but it's incredibly darker and more serious than the average Paperinik stories. The threats he fights are real, there's an ongoing narrative and tons of new characters, people actually die, and there's just a fuckton of stuff going on. I still haven't managed to read it all, but it was a smashing hit. There were even a couple of Ultimate Marvel-styled reboots (the main one being simply named PK and set in a completely different continuity where Donald NEVER adopted the Paperinik identity to begin with and gaining it in a competely different way) and a few continuations (one of which starting by showing a dark future where Donald was fucking MURDERED and he has to prevent it). I think you can find English scanlations online for most series if you're interested, it's unironically a good read AFAIK

Thank goodness my older brother is fun of kindness and bought me one the next day.... then processed to just play the game a 1000% better than me : (

Pretty good video! About the PK comic books, it really is a shame that they did not became famous in the US. Here in Italy they were absolutely the talk in town and to this day the first PK run (of about 60 issues) is still considered to be one of the best production of the entire comic book world. Despite having Donald as a protagonist they were very mature for their time, handling topics such as sacrifice, existentialism, the concept of love, overcoming one's fear. A story in particular called Frammenti D'Autunno (Fragments of Autum) is considered to be one of the best comic book of all time for its take on philosophy and what it means to be alive

I remember playing Goin' Quackers on my Gameboy color during the long road trips we took to visit family. No back light of course, so night time was a real pain to play in unless you were near a lot of street lights. I mostly remember the boss fight with the bear, where you had to land above bee hives to drop honey down to the bear, I guess to keep it from eating you,

I've been reading the Topolino comics, and it's kind of cool seeing how much stuff they carried over from them to these games.

If you want to check out the N64 version, wait for the release of a repair patch for the music that's coming soon. Or better play the Dreamcast or the PC version instead, which are identical to N64 version, but feature the original music in better qualtiy (the N64 version is infamous for having corrupted, glitched Midis. Its even noted on the Wikipedia Page, it's really wild). There is also an HD Texture pack for the PC version, that you can find on my channel 🙂

PK comics are the best, no joke, in one of the issues PK has to travel back in time to stop Duckburg to be completely wiped out of the map by a failed experiment about a new energy type. i do believe PK was brought to japan as well but i'm not sure how well the comics did there

For Donald having a regular sounding voice, I can't help but recall Don Cheadle (YES, that guy) voicing him for one time in the Season 1 finale of Ducktales '17. Pk sounds a bit like Rob Paulsen tbh. Darkwing Duck vs PK anyone? PK does feel a bit like Duck Dodgers..of the 24th and 1 half Century!!

I am italian so PK (the comic) is my childhood so i am biased and all...BUT MAN THE GAME IS SUCH A WASTED OPPORTUNITY: the stories of the comic are actually pretty interesting and fun and having the possibility of playing as PK and living his adventures could have been not only great but also a way to make the comic popular outside of italy. Side note: second shame, the robot arm is much more than a ray gun, it was actually an omni tool of sorts and functioned as a shield, an extandable arm, a jetpack and much more; its a gameplay feature where you really could have gone wild.

As a kid I played Goin' Quackers (was called Quack Attack in Europe) on my dad's work laptop along with the Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear game. Pretty sure it was the star version, and I was also super disappointed when the PS3 store version was all wrong. It's cool to have people talk about these old games! It's a shame when your childhood becomes abandonware.

If you want to play the original Goin' Quackers, it's on the Dreamcast, it runs on 480p if you have the VGA cables (or HDMI cable for Dreamcast do exist, I use the ones from Hyperkin).

Apparently donalds new voice was Rob Paulsen, ironically decades later donald gets voiced by Don Cheadle in a similar situation where donald gets a cool new voice.

Deep Duck Trouble is another fantastic forgotten Donald duck game. It was on the master system, but don't let that fool you, it's fantastic.

Good ol' Goin' Quackers. I'm still not sure if it was way too difficult for a children's game, or if I just sucked as a 7 year old.

I remember being hyped to play going quackers when i saw it on a magazine because I loved Quackshot. Havent played it to this day but might change that since i forgot this game existed.

I did grow up with the PC version of Goin Quackers and I still love it, but I did play the Gamecube version recently and I went out of my way to 100% the game just to see what would happen, and what I got was a Super Mario Sunshine style postcard. You could also check out the PS1 version which is yet another different game in the same style, I haven't bothered finishing that one though

I remember playing PK back on the Gamecube. It's a pretty good game and it's unfortunate that it doesn't get talked about as much

(Donald's name in Italy is Paperino) Really goes to show that the Donald Duck comics are most popular specifically in Europe. (And even more specifically in my home country, Finland!)😉🦸‍♂

The main reason there's so many versions of Going Quackers is it came out during 2000, a transitional year for the video game industry. The PS1, GBC, and Dreamcast were still going strong for a little bit longer, but the PS2, GBA, and GameCube were the new hotness. The main reason why the PS1, GBC, PC, N64, and Dreamcast feels different than their PS2, GameCube, and GBC successors is that multiple sudios within Ubi-Soft developed multiple versions of the game. Shanghai developed the PS1 and GBA Versions, Casablanca developed the N64, PC, and Dreamcast Versions, Montreal developed the PS2 and GameCube Versions, and Milan developed the GBC Version.

I played the PC version of the Donald Duck game as a kid. It was similar to Rayman 2 and both of those games were first real PC games that I have played. I bought the PK game later but the drone minigame was too hard for me and my siblings so we didnt really get far into it.

The n64 version is honestly superior, feels alot more love was put into it

In those, each world had its own thing that was chasing Donald, but here they're all downgraded to the same magical hand in every world (except Magica's Mansion, because that's where it originally came from on PS1 and PC).🤔

I had to discover years after we got and sold the donald PK comic to learn donald had a super hero alter ego named Papernik a reference to a French hero diabolik. Donald original used the altego for revenge, but instead became a hero who defends duckberg. The out of the shadows draws from era 2 papernik that had more future tone, gynoids , ai, and aliens. Era 3 was reunion between heroes such as super goof.

I actually played pk out of the shadows, but i had no idea what was going on, why donald sounded like technis from danny phantom, or while i was being followed by a duck version of kazoo from the flintstones.

I beat PK for the first time same days ago I got it as a kid on Xmas 2004 I was 4 years old as a kid i could not beat it. I got a ps2 to play some hit games like God of War and so on I found PK and though I'll finish it. It took me one siting and the game is like 2h to finch.
