1st Hack is to sort through your kids clothes and toys at least 2x a year. That means you switch out seasons of clothing, Get rid of worn-out or never worn clothes, and rotate clothing sizes removing any clothes that are too small. Also go through their toys and get rid of any broken or things they no longer play with.
2nd Hack is to minimize the quantity of clothing and toys each child has.
we allow 7 play shirts, 2 holiday shirts, 3-4 pants, 3-4 shorts, 3 Sunday/dress pants and shirts (boys), 3 Sunday dresses (girls) and 10 socks and underwear.
Parents tend to buy their children a lot of toys and clothing trying to show them love, however getting your kids too many toys or clothes is actually putting a bigger burden on them then they are able to handle.
Toys are a little more difficult to put an exact number on. It can vary depending on your Childs age and ability to manage their toys. Also we consider a collection of dinosaurs or a bag of blocks to be one toy. We do also have some toys that some of the kids share or are more of community toys. like they will put all their nerf guns together and share them all, or their cars, dinosaurs, or even costume/dress-up.
Be careful with too many community toys that a single person doesn't won though. It can get where no one takes responsibility for them. I do have a daycare/playroom separate that does have a lot of toys in it, however the only time the kids are allowed to play in that room is with adult supervision where it is more of a training ground to teach the kids how to take care of the toys after they play before getting another toy out. After daycare hours or if no adult is present in the room, the children are not allowed in that room so it avoids the room becoming a huge mess that the kids can not handle cleaning up.
