Just in case somebody cares, this is the reaction going on in her washing machine: CH3COOH (vinegar) + Na2CO3 (washing soda) = H2CO3 (carbonic acid) + CH3COONa (sodium acetate)

I'm late to the party on this video, but as folks are super pumped to try this (for good reason), there's only one thing I'd urge folks to remember: Modern day washing machines did not exist back when things were all environmentally friendly and "natural". Block soaps, as many other commenters have mentioned, will leave a residue/scum if not scrubbed off (someone made the reference to a bathtub). In the good ol' days, clothing was laundered with natural soap blocks, but it was all done by hand on a washboard, hand wrung and rinsed. Call this the "scrubbing" of the tub, and there weren't machine cogs or pipes to block up. Bleaching clothes was done by boiling it and hanging it in the sun (my grandmother did all of her laundry by hand, and she did this to my clothing--it'll take the ink right out of your printed shirt, but MAN will it make it white!!) I still do this to dingy white socks to bring the vibrancy back. Maybe doing one load with an eco-detergent, and one with a homemade detergent (alternating) will help prevent build up, but if you do this to your machine for years without giving it a good hand cleaning, I wouldn't expect your machine to last as long as it is marketed to, otherwise. Going through washing machines faster defeats the purpose from both a cost-savings, and an environmental standpoint.

Dump the powders into the center of 2 or 3 sheets of open, clean newspaper, cone up one end of the paper then stuff/pour that into the final jar, far less messy.. this is great recipe, thanks!

My mother (back in the 50's) would fill up her wash tub with warm water, sprinkle in her baking soda and vinegar and swish around and throw in her clothes. After soaking an hour turn on her machine. No irritations no issues. Long before liquid soap came out. I still make my own liquid laundry soap using grated Zote, washing soda and borax and water. Simmer and done. Has worked for many many years.

I made this laundry soap and it’s fantastic! I wish I had learned this years ago. Great soap and it makes my clothes smell super clean and fresh.

Soap berries (also known as soap nuts) work wonderfully as well! A single ingredient that you can use several times over before discarding. I bought them to wash my nut milk bags because I just couldn't find a non toxic soap. Now I aim to incorporate it into all other washing scenarios at home (like for dishes and maybe even general hand washing as well).

Eucalyptus Essential oil and Lavender are also options in the washing cycle. Here in Australia you can get Bosisto's Eucalyptus in a water soluble form. Apart from fragrance, true essential oils also prevent cross contamination if there's illness/flu in the household.

Ok...Just FYI about BORAX- It IS a NATURALLY occurring MINERAL in the environment! It is not a FAKE chemical...I have seen SO many posts that are just disseminating FALSE information and I had to say something. Now, just because it’s naturally occurring MINERAL in the earth’s crust doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good to dissolve in water and use for clothes washing and be then be distributed back out into the water table...However, our great-greats most likely had BORAX in their arsenals of cleaning supplies-especially here in the USA, where there are great big fields of it in the American Southwest...It was referred to as “white gold” because a couple who set out to prospect during the gold rush didn’t find gold near the Mojave desert-instead found themselves BORAX-and they became CRAZY rich boxing it up (Ever see 20 Mule Team Brand? yeah-that was the only way to haul it out and get it to market...Nifty Trivia for Pub Quiz!) and selling it worldwide! Borax-or sodium borate (and there’s a whole list of other scientific names this can be depending upon WHERE it’s mined-is an important BORON compound. The crystal of the dehydrated form-like the one our intrepid prospectors found near the Mojave-bone dry-is a white, colorless crystal that dissolve easily in H2O. It has served as a component of many detergents, cosmetics, used in enamel glazes (huge supplies of this stuff lying about in asia where they have used it for thousands of years for all sorts of things), metallurgy-even neutron capture shielding for radioactive things, a texturizing agent in cooking (in fact, it could be a part of that list of “natural” ingredients food companies DO NOT need to list on packaging-especially in ORGANIC foods by the way...it is a useful insecticide, fungicide, anti-bacterial agent, and all around cleaner! Legend (and science, archaeology) say Borax was first discovered in a dry Tibetan lake bed and became a very lucrative trade commodity on the Silk Road as far back as the 8th century C.E....and was spread as far as the Arabian peninsula and Northern Africa (as far south as Nubia). It was VERY, VERY expensive, luxurious stuff until enough of it was found out in the deserts in the U.S. that made it widely available for commercial use... Oh-and everyone complaining that this DIY business doesn’t work if you have “hard water”- sorry friends- it’s actually one of the BEST water softeners there are-and it prevents lime scale build up. I couldn’t find ANY scientific evidence that Borax is TOXIC to humans or to animals (remember its found in dried up, ancient lake beds-so it was dissolved in H2O). According to one source, it’s median lethal dose is (LD50) is tested at 2.66 g/kg in rats...that’s a whole lot of Borax in other words-in order to cause severe injury and or death in the poor rats it was tested on! It has been used as a pesticide for hundreds of years-that is until it was removed from the “safe list” for human use in the U.S.-I am guessing due to pressure of large chemical companies like Dow and Monsanto-so they could use their poison- in 1946. All restrictions have been removed since 1986-but damage to boric acid’s reputation has already been done, It’s poisonous to the minds of most people today. Only “over exposure”- to breathing it in in large quantities seems to remain a “problem” in the newest tests I could find carried out by the EPA 2006- that’s PRE-TRUMP....It’s a SVHC in the EU for pregnant and nursing women according to the EU-again in seriously EPIC amounts-but ANYTHING could be harmful in huge quantities-even water can kill you if you drink too much of it. The Journal of Toxicology (Google rules) concludes in 2012. that human boron exposure-even in the highest exposure rates are still too low to cause any noticeable damage. So...those of us who are trying to live a more earth friendly existence and tread lightly, leaving behind as few footprints as possible should really be doing our research before dismissing some of these old timey -I will say it-naturally occurring cleaning agents. Heck-it’s not even as caustic as the baked baking soda folks! Years and years of chemical companies trying to hawk their poison INSTEAD has lead to these wacky ideas...We need to do our own research! If not, we are ALLOWING these awful companies (Dow, Monsanto, etc.) to continue to disseminate false information and talk about “fake” science. Sorry it’s banned in Ireland...Perhaps it’s banned so the population will purchase the poison instead of the naturally occurring, fossilized remains of ancient lake beds! (And really, do you research...because just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good! You know...Marie Curie learned that the hard way looking for Uranium...)! Cheers fellow travelers! I am going on 7 months washing my clothes in the bathtub. I stomp on them and swish them around with my feet and hands. I dry them on a line outside or in the house in winter. I've found that, nice to have, I don't really need a washer or dryer. When I started looking at it, I've found so many things I don't really need. 😊

This is basically what I use for washing my clothes! I'm none too afraid of palm or hydrogenated oils as their chemistry is extremely ideal for cleansing. All carbonyl based soaps will decompose naturally in the environment. A common missconseption is that sodium carbonate is not consumable. However any time you use baking soda for cooking it decomposes into "washing soda" releasing CO2 and water. That's what makes it useful as leavening agent.

I've made laundry soap using the borax, washing soda, zote bar soap and baking soda. I made a 5 gallon bucket of it. So it may last me 7 years. I now use this combo as an all purpose cleaner around my home. It's a great degreaser too when allowed to soak esp overnight soaking...no scrubbing needed

3 ingredient No-soap detergent: sodium percarbonate is the main active ingredient in oxiclean. (stain lifter and fabric brightener) baking soda (detergent, softener, and deodorizer) washing soda (detergent) mix equal parts. use 1 oz (two table spoons) for a regular load. for those of us who are not a fan of soap for laundry.

Washing soda is found at Walmart even. Much more time effective.

I've found that grated bars of soap doesn't work on the cold water setting because it doesn't melt.

Really cool! But wait. Why make washing soda when you can buy pure sodium carbonate? Would it not be easier to just add Arm & Hammer washing soda to Castile soap and that's it?
