NOTES ON THIS VIDEO 1. Please spit in your bin as coconut oil can clog your drains. 2. Baking soda is softer on the hardness scale than tooth enamel so will not damage your teeth if they are in a healthy condition. However, if you have cavities or decay already the baking soda may be too abrasive as your protective layer of enamel is no longer present. 3. The essential oils are completely optional so if you don't want to use them orally just skip this step.
For anyone watching here are the recipes; Toothpaste 2 parts coconut oil 1 part baking soda (Optional) 20 drops peppermint essential oil Mouthwash Full jar/bottle water (approx 300ml) 1 tea spoon of baking soda (Optional) essential oil to taste
Raven's Camera Roll all this sound like a bunch of extra damn work just to try live forever in a horrible ass world like this. That's why I eat meat. To ensure I die.
Sophie Ollis I live in North Carolina it hot here and I know coconut oil melts so wound I have to refrigerate the tooth paste and where did you get your mouthwash bottle
I had tried using just baking soda... I got used to it, but a dental assistant told me to be careful because it could be too abrasive. this seems much gentler and much more creamy and pleasant! I just started using baking soda rinses for canker sores this year and it's amazing! Thanks for sharing these with us, I might be looking for a cool bottle in my kitchen for something today....
Ahh yes, baking soda alone is okay once in a while but as your main toothpaste it's probably too abrasive and can lead to receding gums and damaged tooth enamel. It's got great healing properties and is great in smaller doses, though. I hope you do try these recipes! Let me know if you do! :)
I had heard the same thing about baking soda being abrasive and I've heard of people who have used it since they were little and they're 90 now with most of their teeth. Here's a link to a website that rank kinds of toothpaste by their RDA or relative dentin abrasion, baking soda has an RDA of 7 while Crest and other name brands can be over 90 -100 which is considered by the ADA as highly harmful and abrasive. dendds.com/uploads/RDA_index.pdf Do your own research and read up about abrasion and where certain brands rank as far as their RDA goes. Of course the ADA will tell you that RDA shouldn't be used to determine toothpaste and whatnot but I think it's still important to note where baking soda ranks compared to conventional toothpaste.
I just want to say that it is amazing there is no music, the background is clean, the girl doesn't wear make up (I guess), everything in this video is so simple, calm, clean... There isn't much of such a good minimalist content on RU-vid. Thank you so much!
I tried both of these recipes and now have been using them for months! I keep them in cute little jars by my sink, and I use a tiny plastic spoon that I got from a little single-serving chicken salad box to scoop out the toothpaste. A little taster spoon from the ice cream shop would be great too! Works great, and leaves my mouth feeling minty and baking-soda fresh! Took a few days to get used to the baking soda taste but now I love it and associate it with clean!
I have started to begin my journey into a zero waste lifestyle. And my I just say, I love it! It is a far healthier life style, I always feel more energized, and it is as eco-friendly as you can get. You have helped me so much and I love your videos. Your recipies and tips are beyond helpful and you are one of my favorite zero-waste youtubers.
This really helped, I've been moving towards a zero waste lifestyle for nearly 2 years now and never got around making my own toothpaste. Today I ran out of it and decided to make it on the spot, it took me just a minute and I really liked the outcome. I used peppermimt and lemongrass essential oils. Love the mix of both!
Hahaha, I love this comment. Some people react to new information with defensiveness (which only does them a disservice). That's okay... we live on and do our own thing :)
I love the recipe it works great and my mouth feels incredibly fresh! I was looking at the rest of your videos and i would like to see how you make your deodorant! 🙂
I’m def gonna give these a try. Easy enough for anyone👍 Love the no nonsense approach to filming it too, low-fi and just how it will look when I make it🙌
Here’s my deodorant recipe to share, right consistency and effective. Equal parts of room temp coconut oil, (semi-solid) baking soda and corn starch. Makes a great paste and does not stain clothes, YAY! If sensitive to corn starch, you can use arrowroot powder. Add essential oils, a few drops. I like a few of peppermint, a few drops of lavender.
I have the same problem in Thailand. I know I can keep it in the fridge, but it's just a lot of extra work. I really wish there could be another DIY toothpaste that doesn't use coconut oil so that it keeps its firm shape.
Thank you for posting your recipes, I am a health professional & have no calms using these ingredients! Bicarb is used in places never even thought of by most folk. The key is use sparingly! Cheers
Wow it’s rlly cool how that lasts you a whole year, where as my family and I go through a traditional toothpaste tube on average every three months. I can’t wait to try a this recipe!
I am a dental student; the abrasiveness of the baking soda is not sensible in the long term but try just brushing with your soft toothbrush instead! Toothpaste isn't necessary to remove plaque/food debris, which is the whole point of brushing your teeth :)
Ash Lieberherr thanks for the reply! So do you mean it's better to brush with a soft toothbrush and no toothpaste at all? Or is it better to use this recipe with a soft toothbrush? I'm very interested in dropping commercial toothpaste but really scared about messing up my teeth..
If you're interested in discontinuing the use of commercial toothpastes, in terms of the health of your teeth, it would be much better to brush only with your soft toothbrush. This will ensure you're removing all the plaque without using anything too abrasive that will eventually destroy your gums and your enamel :)
I was told by my dentist that toothpaste really doesn't do much. It's really just for us for the "taste" to get us to want to brush our teeth more. I still use toothpaste because I feel dirty without it but yeah :)
Symphoney Peterson I’m sure u can blend some mint water or plain mint into the mix, but it can easily go bad. I’m not for sure about all that but u should experiment
You could infuse the mint into the coconut oil by putting the coconut oil into a double boiler with the mint leaves and let it infuse for a bit in the melted oil. After infusing, take the leaves out and allow the oil to harden again then make the toothpaste! 🙂
I'm new to making homemade items and came across this video. I was wondering what kind of essential oil do you recommend? like what brand? There are so many options out there... are there "safer"/better ones for internal use (toothpaste and mouthwash)? Sorry if this may seem like a stupid question. Just curious and want to get the right items for making these products. Thank you in advance :)
Welcome! I would recommend using a high-quality essential oil that is organic and 100% pure. Cheaper oils are made just for diffusing and not for consumption or skin application. No such thing as stupid questions - I'm glad you asked! Just make sure it's 100% pure.
keb19 I'd recommend looking for essential oil for internal use. You can find food grade essential oil in a variety of flavors. I prefer lemon because I don't like the taste of peppermint.
keb19 hey I'm a random person, but theres a brand called "Doterra" its an amazing essential oil brand its definitely quality.. but you do get small bottles and its quite expensive but i do recommend doterra
keb19 I would recommend making an extract with vodka and mint leaves or lemon zest or whatever edible plant you'd like, just to make sure that what you're ingesting is safe to consume if you don't trust essential oils completely
the doterra are so highly potent also that you only would need to put in a toothpick amount a whole drop would be way too much! so very cost effective even if it doesn't seem like it at the start!
I attempted to make toothpaste last week after watching your zero waste bathroom essentials, too eager to wait for your tutorial before i gave it a go! I followed a mixture of blogs and can’t remember the exact quantities of coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint essential oils that i tried but the mix I made has a very sharp bitter taste. I’m trooping through but was wondering if that was something that you have gotten used to or if it was just to do with the quantities i used?
♥️ this, I’ve been looking for a thyroid friendly toothpaste, never considered making one! Thank you for sharing this hun you have so much great tips in your videos and your dog is too cute 🥰 xxx
omg love this video been looking for some real simple healthier alternatives to toothpaste and mouthwash and your video really helped me thx sooo much cant wait to see what else you will post hopefully more vids like this
Hej, quick question. What essential oils do you use? Because a LOT of essential oils are in general toxic like eucalyptus, thyme, tea tree etc. and i cant find good sources for which ones are toxic and which aren't.
villekullArt so i know im a random person... but there is an essential oil brand called "Doterra" its quite expensive... but i do believe that most of their oils are ingestible but.. if its not they do say on their website... idk
villekullArt Frankencense essential oil is really good for your teeth and oral health along with many areas of your health. (So is peppermint). To ingest frankencense or create a mouth wash, add 2-3 drops to 3 cups of water. Doterra and Young Living are the highest quality brands of oil, but I haven't used expensive oils before...
I'm going to give this a try! I love the idea of using simple products - I hate looking at the back of products I either put in my body or on my body and having a list a mile long containing half the periodic table and using chemicals I can't even pronounce.
when I was young I used to live in Dubai and there I learned about the salvadora persica Miswak which is amazing natural plant that's used for teeth cleaning for looong time and I really enjoy using them, and they are zero waste and proved effecient but I wish that the tree would grow in the west ... rn I like to stock on them every year.. or have my relatives send them to me
I commented 3 weeks ago that this had made my teeth sensitive and went back to using my old regular toothpaste my teeth are seriously agony now 😭 I honestly feel like crying
Oh I'm sorry dear maybe stick with regular toothpaste or substitute the baking soda for some charcoal powder it's less abrasive compared to baking soda
Technically you don't need toothpaste...just brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush. The goal is to disturb the plaque so it doesn't sit on your teeth. And rinse by using 1/16 teaspoon of peroxide in 4 oz of water (and if you're like me and can't stand the taste of peroxide (no matter how little the amount) use 1 or 2 drops of a minty food grade Essential oil) Oh and don't forget to floss... I have EXTREMELY sensitive teeth and this is how I brush my teeth. I haven't had any cavities and my dentist recommended a toothpasteless toothbrush. If they are to the point that you want to cry, rinse with water and drop of orajel to desensitize your mouth before you brush your teeth. Like when I say I have extremely sensitive teeth, I can feel the AIR from the spinny thingy the dentist uses before she even touches my teeth...and this is even AFTER she has just numbed my entire face with Novacane. This method helps with my sensitivity issues.
@@tiffanyn480 thank you for this post.. I have extremely sensitive teeth as well and I've been wondering how I can do this without my special toothpaste...that...honestly isn't doing it's job anymore.
Hey I found your cool bottle for the mouth wash p. Saw it on EBay it's called a slow gin bottle. But I typed in glass bottle with flip top... Thinks it's 500ml I like its shape for storage. 👍😀
Really? Turmeric? The yellow powder that stains everything yellow and does not wash off? I would be scared it would do the opposite of whitening teeth! Interesting..
I made some toothpaste today using your recipe as a guide. I added some activated Charcoal for whitening and cannabis oil to prevent gum disease. Thanks for the recipe!
Thanks for sharing. Very useful. Thank you. I tried the toothpaste recipe at home. It's really easy to make. However, since i try to use natural ingredients most of the time, I tried a different type of mouth wash. I infused natural mint leaves which i plucked freshly from my garden in some water. After some time, i used the liquid as mouthwash - it works great and no chemical added! Purely safe and natural... Thanks again.
WARNING: Proceed with CAUTION; the deodorant was fine at first (I loved the smell and protection) for the first couple of weeks; then I begin to notice dark circles under my arms before the skin irritation started (I have sensitive skin); something like a chemical burn, before my skin started to peel; I followed the directions (opted out of the peppermint essential oil to keep it simple) but her ratios may be off because the recipe was way too strong for my skin; I think it was the baking soda that was way too harsh since it is an abrasive; didn't like the toothpaste either, way too salty for regular use; only the mouthwash worked out; DISCLAIMER NEEDED for folks with sensitive skin; I appreciate the host effort and what she was trying to do is help people live clean but results will vary; would NOT recommend the deodorant P.S. I wish I could add photos so you can see what it did to my skin
No, I live in London and it doesn't get warm enough here for it to melt. But if you live in a hot climate you can always either keep it in the fridge or spoon it into your mouth (it melts in the mouth anyway so wont make a difference).
I made some yesterday for the first time and mine melted :/ I'm an hour outside London (and I used lemon essential oil and some stevia instead of peppermint and it tasted so good I wanted to eat it!)
I love this and Im very excited that Sophia makes no waste things but I would honestly stay away from baking soda from all times. I would try activated charcoal instead.
hi, I love this DIY but i was wondering about the absence of fluoride? My dentist said it was essential to have branded toothpastes as they have fluoride. Thank you!
Hi, if you search about fluoride you are going to see that it's a myth. This website is just an example www evolving wellness com/post/never-use-fluoride-toothpaste Actually a lot of people try and look for toothpaste without it. :) Hope this helps
Dentists will tell you that because they're trying to sell a product, believe it or not. In fact, we don't actually need toothpaste at all, the brushing is what's necessary and the toothpaste adds lubricant. But we'd be just fine without it.
Fluoride is essential as a public health tool to prevent caries. This is because our diets are usually full of sugar, which gets turned into acid by the bacteria in our mouth and the acid wears away at the enamel. Fluoride helps to anchor the calcium ions on near the surface of our teeth, creating a barrier of sorts that helps protect against the acid. (www.nature.com/news/2004/040122/full/news040119-8.html) Now if you don't have a crappy diet, don't eat that much fruit, and drink tons of water then perhaps baking soda is enough to neutralise the acids in mouth before bed and brushing will get rid the biofilm on top of our teeth. But baking soda is not recommended for anyone with receding gums, as you may be scraping away at the exposed dentin and damaging the tooth.
@AndreiaMachado Hi, I just wanted to inform you that a blog post is not considered valid evidence. And neither does the fact that a lot of people do a thing make the doing a good thing. That is one of the points against fluoride, isn't it? (That just because most people brush with fluoride, doesn't make fluoride worth using). Nevertheless, there are some issues I'd like to point out from your link. Firstly, you should alway be wary of sources that advertise, promote products or have links to products in the post. I'm not saying they are all liars, but just to be wary. That blog post has several. Secondly, also be wary of headline that sensationalise. They are clickbaiting and therefore trying to sell you something. And not the fun, Buzzfeed kind. Thirdly and most importantly, sites that proclaim without citing, as seen here "The biggest scientific proof for not needing the fluoride in water is that tooth decay has dropped at the same rate in countries with, and without, water fluoridation." should also be taken with a grain of salt. So where is this scientific proof? What study showed this? It doesn't take long to dig up an article. Here's a systemic review that shows fluoridation DOES help with caries (tooth decay) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28289474?log$=activity. It took me 2 minutes to find. Links to Wikipedia pages are sadly not acceptable. Not saying that EvolvingWellness is a shit site, but just trying to raise awareness on how research and science journalism should be done. I do understand the fear of fluoride being used in public water as children are the most susceptible to bodily and neurological damage (the mechanisms of which we do not yet understand), however there are easy ways to remove it (boiling, filtering), so I can't say the outcry in this article of it being a violation of human rights has any basis. I hope you found this useful.
Both my parents are dentists. I'm interested in the zero waste lifestyle and I was curious about the baking soda. They both agreed that the daily use of baking soda on teeth can be really harmful. So I don't recommend this. I'm waiting to discover another healthier method
This is a common misconception. If you take a look at the hardness scale you'll see that tooth enamel is a lot tougher than baking soda. However, if you already have lost enamel or tooth decay you might want to use clay instead.
I use a baking soda mixture to brush my teeth but I only use it once every couple of days. In between, I just brush my teeth with a little bit of peppermint essential oil! My dentist says I have some of the whitest and strongest teeth he's seen :)
Please do proper research or ask the opinion of a dentist before sharing things like these on the internet. It is great you adopt this lifestile and I admire you, but you should take care what you share cause lot of people take into account your opinion (right or wrong...)
Something I tried to add to this is lemon juice! It reacts with thr baking soda and fizzes, and it changes the texture a little. I'm not sure if it has any benefits pertaining to teeth, but it makes your breath smell better
Thanks for the great video! Do you not worry about ingesting essential oils? They're not food grade, and I would worry about ingesting them (they're for topical, not internal use)
Hi! I know this a really old video, but I've been trying to 100% start with the zero waste lifestyle and with more natural products and lifestyle, now that my daughter start to understand more (16 months today) I want to show to her from very young age how much help with can give to the environment and how healthy we can live without harm animals, oceans, and all that things. I just start my channel so is nice to found this amazing community and share this amazing tips with each other.
Thank you for your lovely comment. I’d highly recommend checking out Rehana Sara (RU-vid) / Rehanajomeen (Instagram) - she’s a good friend who has a beautiful baby daughter and lives zero waste. She shares wonderful tips around sustainable childcare etc and is a beautiful soul.
Hi, Sophie! Loved the recipes. I made another jar of toothpaste today and I think I used too much peppermint essential oil. It feels really weird on the tongue. Do you know how to fix it? Thank you!
