www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2... A YEAR'S worth of Laundry Soap?! That's an idea that is hard NOT to get behind! This recipe is easy to make and will leave your clothes looking (and smelling) clean and fresh!
I’m a 43 year old man. ...at this point in my life, I thought the RU-vid algorithm would be shooting me golf videos or hot rod car videos.....but alas, RU-vid knows me much much better than I know myself.
You still have to teach the algorithm. Try a little bit harder this time. Try not to fool the algorithm. Be honest with yourself and with the algorithm. You can simply blame the algorithm for all the mistakes and wrong choices. This is not true.
Ahmed Elmasry Thank you Ahmed, I appreciate your response, however my initial response was more tongue in cheek than actual commentary on the actual RU-vid algorithm. Maybe I don’t know myself as well as I thought. ;)
3 bars of Zote or Fields Naptha soap (grated finely) I Box of Borax 1 Box of Washing Soda 2 cups Baking Soda 2 (3lb. container) Oxygen Bleach Optional Scented Crystals 2 trash bags ________________________________
Saw this video over 3 years ago, looking for a cheaper way to wash laundry as I was expecting my 2nd child and my husband's job was extremely dirty. I doubled the recipe and have only had to make this natural laundry detergent TWICE IN 3 1/2 YEARS doing laundry every single week and having family members come over to do laundry as well! This is an absolute game-changer, try it! You will not regret it!
We have a family of 10 and this is all I ever use. I make it every February and I love it. I have an HE Whirl Pool Washer and I have been using this now for 6 years and the washer is still working great.
Are you pouring the powder directly onto the load of clothes? If so, try starting the water and adding the powder first, then adding the clothes as the water fills.
I also started using this to clean my bathroom tub and sink. It cuts the soap scum and makes it really white. I just use the basic recipe without the added scent crystals.
thelmarrie I have to use my 1st batch for bathroom because I used an old box of borax that left a weird smell on my clothes. There was no way I was throwing that huge batch away.
I used white Zote instead of fels naptha because it has a whitener and I wanted to omit the oxygen cleaner. I have delicate clothes. If I need whites cleaned whiter, then I add the oxygen cleaner to the load. Also, I omitted the fragrance pellets because my kitty cats do not like scents on their blankets and toys. So if I want fragrance I add the fragrance pellets to the load. This way every load is custom made. I love Jillee's recipe, and that it can be tailored to everyone's needs.... And her bag mixing technique is brilliant!
Zote is also way more "Natural" than Fels Naptha (which has way too many harmful chemicals and skin irritants in it. Including Triclocarban which the FDA has admitted to being linked to causing many health issues, especially in newborns. As well as Talc, which has been linked to causing many cancers). After looking at the Ingredients list of Fels Naptha (and having to hunt down what each ingredient does), makes me nervous to ever use it. If you also want a more Natural Fabric Softener, without any fragrance, use Vinegar in the rinse cycle. It is a Natural Fabric Softener, and a Natural Deodorizer as well. (No, your clothes will not smell like vinegar after being washed either)
Notorious White Rabbit I can answer ur question when buying Zote there’s actually two kinds there’s the white one and then there’s a pink Zote for delicate clothes, so when washing darks use the pink Zote it works wonderful on darks
I am also an appliance repairman and I do not recommend using this in new HE machines. In fact, I don't recommend using any powder detergent in these machines. They simply do not use enough water to thoroughly dissolve or rinse away this type of detergent. Half of the problems I encounter in repairing HE machines is due to the type and quantity of detergent used. But, if you are determined to use powder detergent, use it sparingly and always do an extra rinse. I know these homemade detergents are popular with some people because they are inexpensive to make. But, I promise if you screw up your machine by using too much the cost of repair will negate any cost savings from make-your-own detergent. 🤔
i take my tablespoon full, add it to a little container... add water... mix thoroughly... add to the machine... start the machine. this way ALL the powder dissolves.
I love the use of "all natural" to commonly describe things that are safe and good. Well, heroin, cocaine, turpentine, and arsenic are all natural too.
Just a note, if using for cloth diapers, leave out the fabric softener - it can make the diapers less absorbent as it leaves kind of a waxy substance on them :)
I have been making my own and using it for the last four years. This is a much easier recipe than I've been using so I'm happy to find it. Cleans my clothes soooo much better than the other stuff. Clothes stay in great shape and look new. I don't put softener in mine though.
I just made this soap and I've been using it for about two weeks. I love it. It is so much easier than the liquid and I think it works so much better. My clothes smell great.
I have a question, using this mix means there’s no use for the actual laundry detergent, or is this a added mix to the actual detergent … I’m a bit lost.. 😔
One thing to mention since the filming of this video as the company who makes the Borax SIGNIFICANTLY lowered the "standard box size" that you are using. It's MUCH smaller now thus requiring an extra box to get the correct ratio you are using here now in 2016. I noticed that just a few weeks ago when I went to make my laundry soap. :( I hate when companies do that!!
I’ve been using this laundry detergent forever and I love it. I think the people who don’t like it are putting way too much in each load. It’s so strong that a tablespoon really is enough! Thanks! 😊😊😊
I make my laundry soap 🧼 with castille soap, essential oils, distilled water. Keep in a drink dispenser. Sometimes I will add baking soda but only half the time. Then for dryer sheets we use scraps of fabric or old rags, white vinegar (great for static), essential oils and distilled water. Soak in a jar. Dryer will dry it then throw in the wash and re-use over and over!
Just wanted to say how happy I am with this recipe! I made this recipe following your video March 11th.. so about 5 months in.. it cleans just like store bought and for 30 bucks! And yes looks like I can get a year's worth out of it!
Fels naptha ingredients are.... look at the second ingredient ☣ Soap (Sodium Tallowate*, Sodium Cocoate* (or) Sodium Palmate Kernelate*, and Sodium Palmate*), Water, ➡Talc⬅, Dipentene, Coconut Acid*, Palm Acid*, Tallow Acid*, PEG-6 Methyl Ether, Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Pentasodium Pentetate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Titanium Dioxide, Triclocarban, Fragrance, Acid Orange 24, Acid ... ☢Talc is associated closely with asbestos in the ground. Misusing the word “chemical” is forgivable, we know what she means. But I do disagree with her calling this mixture “natural.” The fabric softener crystals are anything but.
Right! I use castile soap and essential oils instead. Its good enough to use in our septic and saves trips to town as well as money. I use wool balls with essential oils in the dryer for softening.
MissChievousRN how do you add essential oils to a dry powder laundry detergent or wool dryer balls? I have been thinking of using the wool dryer balls also instead of dryer sheets.
This stuff is awesome. I unintentionally used too much the first time and it gave my laundry a weird sour smell and I was like nooooo, because I thought I just wasted my money, but I cut it way back the next time and they smelled way better, and it still cleaned them real good. As a single man I may get 2 years+ outta this stuff. I barely put a dent in it lol so far in around 3 months.
You got to invest in order to save. A lot cheaper then spending money every month on soap. Just like when I cloth diapered. 200 dollers for cloth diaper was better than hundreds.
Shyrin Chan homemade laundry soap is becoming so popular that tide is sending out disinfo shills on social media to scare people into not making it. Maybe if they weren't so greedy and charging us $20 for a jug of soap we would still be buying it.
I'm one person and very frugal. $30 will wash my clothes for four years, plus the addition of least expensive and occassional drycleaning. Great find and good presentation. I don't like music when I'm listeing for instruction or news. I like that she brought in the music light just as finished and pouring into the glass container, kind of a celebration with music then. Cool.
just made my first batch, it smells clean and wonderful without having to use scent crystals...i used a fine cheese grater to grate my bars of soap and then hand mixed the powders in one box at a time to help keep the grated soap from clumping as it was a little moist...it all mixed together wonderfully and i'm testing out a load of laundry now...i'm going to try it on other things like the tub, shower and some countertops
Good for liveaboard life, very compact and efficient. This condensed amount is amazing for storage and lowering the weight and being a cheaper alternative on long trips. So many thanks. #sailing community will love this!!
Man you go to my medical school and I see your comments at least once a week. I’m just trying to enjoy my post summative freedom but alas the RU-vid algorithm has reminded me of my marriage to Medicine.
Try using a 5 gallon bucket! :) It won't break like the bags and you can leave the extras in it. :) I saw a similar recipe, but it was doubled and it's lasted us the last year and will last us at least 6 more months with 2 in cloth diapers. It's amazing!
That's what I did too. 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Roll it around, tip it upside down, roll again. The ingredients seem to be well incorporated doing it this way, though I did have to break up a few lumps with a big ol' spoon.
I quit making this and using it because it eventually leaves a nasty ring that is hard to remove around my washer tub AND my clothes come out dingy as well. I thought a vinegar rinse would help cut the soap for the final rinse but alas, it doesn’t seem to. Now I use Arm and Hammer dry detergent and am very happy.
Love this kind of thing. Its not that I mind spending money on say a really valuable thing but when Im able to avoid being gouged for something I can do myself it feels like Ive won.
I just made this for the second time, our first batch lasted over a year! We LOVE this recipe and prefer how this cleans our clothes over normal detergent. Thanks so much for sharing!
Nothing natural about scented fabric softener crystals, but I get it! You can sub it out for essential oils and keep it natural and safer on sensitive skin
ChildofGodFirst obviously you don’t know anything about fragrances and oil isolates. I have an allergy to synthetic fragrances and have done that my whole life. My clothes are clean and smell lovely. Don’t knock it til you try it. The video said this was natural- the synthetic fragrances in the fabric softener isn’t natural. This matters to people who require non synthetic fragrances.
Thank you so much for making this video, I will be trying this one out for my family. I also love the tablespoon method because with the bigger scoop sometimes they want to put a whole bunch of soap in the machine when it is not needed.💕
Guilty. When I made this a few years ago, I used the scoop that came in the box of soap flakes. I was too lazy to grate the bars and I found a box of Ivory soap flakes for $1. I was using at least a fourth of a cup. Still lasted ten months though.
Nicely done! I've made this for years but LOVE the addition of the fabric softener beads. I'm going to have to try them in the mix next time instead of adding later, LOL. :)Jen
I think some of you guys are mistaken. She didn't say she was making a natural detergent; it's just homemade detergent. So sure she used products with some chemicals in it. Big deal, if she used scent boosters. What's wrong with you people? It would have been cool to list the items in the description.
Frances Walker At the end, she says natural detergent and talks about things you don't want on your family's skin. She uses natural and homemade interchangeably.
There are many variations of this online. I simply use borax, baking or washing soda, and the bar soap. Add 1/4-1/2 cup white vinegar to fabric softener dispenser or to final rinse. Works great for me and many others. Vinegar removes odors, residue, and softens fabric amazingly well. Smell goes away when dry.
Thank you! I made it and use it to wash old towels, rags , and sheets that I use around the house for doing things like cleaning glass, wiping up spills, or washing my vehicles . It really cleaned them all very well and even removed grease stains! I was impressed with its cleaning power and it saves me from using more expensive laundry detergent.
I am definitely going to make this as a backup because my girlfriend is absolutely stubborn about this kind of stuff but she would use anything if we run out. I will also wash my personal clothes with this exclusively if I like it. So I can't see this much lasting a year but I'll give it a try
Years ago I made some of this detergent. I didn't have laundry facilities available to me so I had to wash my laundry by hand. As I was washing the very first articles of clothing the water turned black. Wow, this stuff really gets the dirt out of your clothes. I don't wear my clothes more than once, so they were fairly clean anyway, so I thought. I was very surprised at the color of the water. And my clothes felt so clean and fresh after I pulled them off the clothes line.
I've been making this (similar) for 2 years only thing I add to it is the 1 Large bag of Foca Laundry booster that you can get at Wal-mart for about $7 for a very large bag, does add even more cleaning power and makes it last even longer.
I only use the smaller bag of foca no bar of soap: or scent crystals. the rest is the same: I use white distilled vinegar and couple drops lavender oil in the rinse cycle. however i do use the bars of soap to directly use on stain’s
Tried this recipe today. Ok my review is mixed. I live in NYC and we do laundry in a laundromat every 4weeks. 2Kids, plenty stains. So the two 2table spoon works well in the double loader machine with Pretreat stains and use Clorox for colors, use way less than recommended amount . In the triple loader if the clothes are heavily soiled I suggest you use a liquid detergent with oxyclean power fill to the o line for all brand and 2-3 table spoon in the pre wash and 2-3 tbs in wash compartment. For the BIG LOAD holds 6 baskets full of clothes. I use 2 table spoon in the pre wash and 3-4 in the wash compartment.I Use a stain remove on some items directly and a minute among of Clorox ultra bleach for colors like 1tbs full. Pro: because I use the Clorox for colors In my clothes the clothes are very bright. The smell is amazing. Makes no suds for an he machine. Con: does not do a good job on whites even with the use of chlorine bleach. It left the black rim on the shirts collar and cuff which does not happen even when I use the cheapest detergent. For people who like suds this is a bit getting used to. Not really good on dirt on the knees. I suggest using your favorite liquid detergent the smallest amount or 1tsp of dawn2x. Or rub in fels naptha on wet clothing for stain removal. Don't use the whole box of baking soda if your water is not that hard. I used the whole box and so the detergent is not that concentrated. Mistakes: I used the 4lbs box of baking soda, I used 2 zote bars, 1purex scents crystals, 3 x 1lbs oxyclean from the dollar stores ( along with a 3lbs box of the real oxy clean versatile stain remover $9) Corrections: next time use 3bars of zote and half the baking soda. Thanks so much for this recipe it only cost me $35 for the whole recipe with an extra bar for pretreatment.
Ladybug Jenkins the comment I replied to was talking about the amount of baking soda she used incorrectly. I replied with the fact that she stated her mistakes. The comment before said NOTHING about the cons list therefore I did not address it. If it doesn’t pertain to what I was talking about, refrain from responding with stuff that isn’t applicable to what I’m referring to. Thanks
Thank you. I have been making this soap for a few years now, but you really have me some great tips. Like adding some oxi wash when I'm processing the Felsnaptha. And using a trash bag to mix it. Those were to pains of the process. I'm excited to try these tips. Thanks again!
Thanks to RU-vidrs some of them shares beneficial tips with us. I made home made laundry detergents and I love it also very cheap for bigger size families . Peace and love people.
I have been using this for the last few years and absolutely love it. While reading these comments, one suggested adding water. NO ! Do not add water with baking soda! Unless you want to clean your entire laundry area! It will not be good! This is a dry formula. There are liquid formulas that some do love. I will still with Jill, she's my go to on so many things!
Adam is a jackass that doesn’t know why someone would want good appliances. See, Adam, things like a blendtec are helpful tools for doing a number of things well around the house. Conversely, you’re likely an unhelpful tool who does nothing around the house.
I made this last September and with a family of 9, we are just now (August of the next year) almost out. What we have left will probably last until at least September. One year’s worth of detergent for $30 is awesome.
I made this last year and it works well- on kid's clothes, hubby's work clothes, towels and sheets. I am so glad you made this video with garbage bags for an easy mix! I will advise to anyone reading my comment, I did burn up my Blender trying to break down the soap, but that's ok b/c I can replace it. This was def worth it, and the convenience of not having to remember one more thing to purchase has been great. A little pro tip too, white vinegar you can buy in bulk for like $3, is a disinfectant and makes your towels extra soft and fluffy :) I use 2 tablespoons for a full load just to give an idea.
Great help thanks! I noticed your stove up against the wall! It would be a great idea if you would put some type of fireproof substance on the wall. The extreme heat travels under the pot and out towards the wall. It can cause problems, such as the wall overheating and catching fire. A piece of fire retardant material, even a piece of stainless steel will do the trick. Something that will block the extreme heat. 12-16” high and 23” deep. Safe cooking! 👍🏻
U can make twice as much by making it in liquid form, hot water combines the ingredients, and you can stretch it by filling gallon jugs with half solution and water! Most people waste detergent by putting several scoops in one load, when the wash rinse cycle will do most of the work!
You can; however, you can not add the peroxide bleach to it, and will need to add that separately if you want to. The dry peroxide bleach only works for a short period of time after it is wet and then becomes neutral.
@@-AnyWho My son did those Tide Pod things, know what happened? He grew ginger bread legs and had Red Hot scabies around his white frosting sores.. It's not really funny, it's a serious complication with baking with such powerful ingredients. Luckily this recipe, if consumed enough only leaves your skin flaky where you don't need any extra soap to shower with. Lady is a pro and she don't know.
Wow this is great. This made me think about how much money im spending on detergent. Both my husband and I wear a uniform every day and we do A LOT of laundry in our house. I'll be trying this for sure.
I bought an extra blade for my food processor and it is only used for making laundry soap. I have several friends and my daughter's college friends that love this soap so I make batches for them too. They bring me the supplies and they leave with laundry soap. :-)
I did this last year and it gas taken a little over a year to finish. I was using a little more, though and we are only two. But I really liked the outcome and ready to do it again. Thanks for sharing.
I found a stainless steel Coffee Scoop at Walmart(2 Tbsp) that's perfect to keep inside the container of detergent. I also split the big batch into two glass containers so I could make two different scents. Mine never lasts me a year because someone always wants to try it at home. For this price I don't mind sharing. :)
I also do not add my scent booster to the batch. I keep it separate so that my mom can use the soap and not have a allergic reaction. I just add a little downy to my personal loads. (Mom lives with us)
Fels Naptha and Zote have the same cleaning ingredients but I prefer Fels Naptha. You dont need to add Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) and OxiClean they are the same thing. Oxiclean (Sodium Percarbonate) is better since it contains powdered form of Hydrogen Peroxide which is also marketed as color safe bleach.
No, they are NOT the same thing. Sodium Percarbonate breaks down when in contact with water to form Hydrogen Peroxide. If you don't know anything about chemistry, don't make proclamations like this. It's dangerous.
Jennifer Wells I agree with your point; they’re not the same. But how is it dangerous? If someone leaves out the washing soda, their grass stains might not come out? That kind of danger?
I'm not sure if 1 TB spoon is really enough. I could be wrong. I use between a 1/4C and 1/3 C per load. I have a top load washer. I can honestly say this is the best detergent I have ever used. My last batch lasted us about 6-7 months.
I use the 1 tablespoon in my top loader without any less cleaning power. I have hard water but I don't use the oxi in it. Maybe I use less per load because I do smaller loads? When I was using the 1/4 c to even 2tablespoons in cold water, I would get undissolved soap left. When I started using less, it worked better.
I made this today! I am allergic to all that other stuff so I just used the Zote bars and super washing soda by them selves , and next month im going to get some castle soap it has olive oil in it and I thought that may be good for my clothes lol but this is fun and I'm enjoying new things.
I have been using this for quite awhile now. I made a batch quite awhile ago and shared some with a friend and she LOVED it too and wants to get together and make more. I actually used the Zote Flakes and it works great and I don't have to grate.
I've tried it, really like the scent of my clothes 👚👗🎽👖👘👕👔 now! I put a date on when i made it & started using it, let's see how long it will last!! 👍👍.. Can u also post a video on how to make own liquid hand soap? Would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance🙏
After looking at a few recipes, I’m making my own detergent today. But my simpler recipe will just use Dr. Bronner’s castille Bar soap, borax, A&H washing soap, baking soda, and Mrs. Meyers laundry boosters for fragrance. I’m mostly doing it bc #1 it’s all-natural (you know what I mean), #2 it’s economical, and #3 I hate using all the big plastic containers that my usual liquid laundry detergent comes in. Over time, I’ll see how well it works. If it doesn’t, I’ll try simple castille liquid soap as recommended in these comments.
I made the soap and am very happy with it. I do use hot water to dissolve soap first. I add white vinegar w essential lavender oil. I have HE washer. Highly recommend. Thank you for this video!!
Thank u so much for responding so quickly. I am definitely going to be making this homemade laundry detergent. I hope u have a wonderful day and I think ur videos are great. 😃

Jillie... yo Jillie. You changed the game, Jillie. Like my life will never be the same. Am I the only one that's shook? I am shooooooook. My laundry game is going to be the goat. Nobody can tell me nothing. A1 Laundry forever.
I make my own laundry detergent but I used my own homemade soap. Sometimes, bastile, pure castile, coconut and curd soap. With zero Superfating it means no oil left just pure soap. This is not a bath soap but it's for cleaning and washing clothes.
+Luzvi Germinal I do this too. 80% coconut oil/20% lard soap and it cleans great. No detergents like Zote or Fels Naptha AND no-one has ezcema any more. These shop bars are bad for your skin. I only mix it with the soda crystals, none of the other chemicals she used.
