Soda cake has been around since the 70's and they are really good with the right combo of soda and cake. If you use less soda like 9 oz it turns out the best. ♥
This seems to be a very American thing - I see lots of US articles that say “2 ingredients” etc and one ingredient is a cake mix, or a tin of cookie dough or cinnamon rolls... Quite annoying, as those aren’t things most people have lying around the house (at least in Australia)!
Fun fact: these cake mixes never had eggs in their original formulations. They were added to the recipe as a marketing tactic for housewives to have a true "baking" experience since everyone felt like it was cheating 🙄 So I'm not shocked at all that this worked.
Those original formulations are not sold anymore. Current cake mixes need eggs for the emulsification process to work. Eggless cakes lack the proper enzymes and result in very sticky cakes, much like the one David had. They still taste great but the texture is clumpy and sticky and weird.
I still kinda think it's cheating but i don't judge anyone that doesn't understandably want to make a cake from scratch.I use those pillsbury dough boy biscuits and they taste good 🤭
You should have a 2-ingredient series (or incorporate it into this series). Where you try out recipes where you only need two ingredients. I have no idea how many recipes like that are out there but I always think they sound so weird.
Igtdja there have been instances where do a video that David did before in a close timespan. Im not sure about this time. That was a poor word to say. I will delete that comment.
Anyone remember when David made PSL banana bread and Buzzfeed slithered in like the snakes they are and stole the recipe and EVERYONE was in Buzzfeed’s comments telling them to give David credit and they never did?
Human Beings Actually, all boxed cake mixes in my country (India), are very simple to make. You don't need anything of the sort foreigners use, that's not the point of a boxed mix. Ours are vegeterian (probably vegan, actually) and all you add is water. That's it. If I really do have to put in the effort of measuring oil, and eggs, and other stuff, I might as well whip up a whole cake that'd be far superior in taste.
That was a common "tip" in Weight Watchers - to take a can of diet soda and cake mix and end up with a cake that had only 60% the calories of the oil+eggs version.
dump cake (which is this + any fruit) is a low key famous recipe among scouts because of how easy it is to make in a dutch oven an amazing camp dessert, especially if you're tired of s'mores
OH MY LORT!!! THE CURE! La Croix!!! Chocolate cake mix and coconut LaCroix is my FAV!! No sugar so not overly sweet or sticky, still bubbly so it works and uuummm...chocolate cocnut!!! Passion fruit LaCroix and french vanilla cake mix is also AMAZING!!
Its not a new thing, I grew up on soda cake. It's amazing. If I remember correctly it was invented by weight watchers. Also chocolate cake with orange soda is where it's at. Edit: It's supposed to be gooey, that's the point. Like ooey gooey butter cake. Also they're best with whipped topping.
I’ve done this with plan club soda and also sparkling water... my mother in law does this with cream soda for all of her cakes. You should try a whipped cream for an icing, so then you can control the sugar in your whipped cream. Great to see you back.
Some tricks that bakers use, are mixing soda water/Soda, into the batter, to make it light and fluffy! I would recommend adding a few splashes of soda water to ur pancake mix. Best pancakes u will ever eat!
I tried Strawberry cake mix with 1 can of sprite soda. Oven was at 375. Cooked for 30 minutes. Turned out awesome. Also I used non stick spray with no paper. Didn’t stick at all. Came out cakey but not dry.♥️♥️ Recommend it for strawberry cake lovers.
A better mix for the chocolate cake is using cola, and to not use dark chocolate. I did this for a cake once and it was SO GOOD but incredibly hard to decorate lol, thankfully I didn't use frosting and used whipped cream instead (I made the portal cake) It helps to add a egg
this trick has been done for years and it works the carbonation in the soda makes the cake cook right i was told. there are some really sugary and heavily foodcolored sodas like strawberry and grape that were used in michigan called Faygo and they make the cakes taste really good
The best way to keep your cakes from sticking to the pan (other than the parchment) is to coat it in butter and then dust it with flour to coat the butter (make sure to dump out the excess flour from the pan)
I really think if you try each flavor with a clean palate that you will taste them in completely different ways. Two different sweets can throw one another off just like eating cinnamon candy after brushing your teeth.
Oooo I love these cakes! I've tried the orange one and the lemony one in the past and they turned out really well, and I once did one with strawberry soda and chocolate cake and that one turned out the best.
I get so pumped to see these soda cake videos. Its the best vegan cake hack around i looove it. I often make betty crocker chocolate mix with a can of cheap soda from aldi (with the surprisingly vegan buttercream style lemon frosting mmm so goooood)
if you use just an 8-oz can of soda instead of a 12-oz bottle, you get a bit more structure in the cake (but it's still moist), and the soda flavor doesn't overpower the cake as much. also as everyone else has been saying, use whipped cream frosting!
I absolutely love these soda cakes. It makes the cake so moist. From the one's I've tried, I love chocolate cake mix with Diet Pepsi. I can't wait to hear your review about these other flavours.
try mixing coco cola with the chocolate cake mixture, it's actually more palpable if you're not a fan of root beer. I one time made a coco cola cupcakes with the cake mixture, but if you want it to be a little less sticky try adding the rest of the ingredients, and instead of using water, I found that mixing heavy whipping cream (or half & half) tones down the flavor of the soda a bit and even makes the consistency less sticky and more like a cake. If you also want to tone down the sugar a bit, adding a couple of spoonfuls of cake flour does help. Just be aware that it can make the cake a little drier, so adding a little extra oil and cream to balance the flour can help. (I mostly eyeball it) The oven will basically bake the soda pretty well so there's not too much of worry for the dairy and soda to mix badly. It's the equivalent of making champagne or rum pastries. Just with soda instead
While I was at drum corps, one of our volunteers made Gatorade cupcakes. They were incredible. (For those who don’t know drum corps, it’s basically a marching band that competes and tours across the country. Sometimes called “marching band on steroids” as we house in high schools for the entire summer, and perfect our show.)
Hey! So the reason your cakes are sticky and super moist is because there’s pudding in these cake mixes! I’ve done it with a “normal” mix, and it came out to be less sticky than it would be with a pudding cake mix...
I'm curious what would happen if you did it with flavored seltzer/sparkling water instead of soda. Would it work out similarly without being too sweet? Maybe you could frost it.
If you do the same thing but with chocolate cake, cannes cherries, and dr pepper, you get this amazing chocolate cherry dr pepper cobbler. Tastes great and its super easy to make.
I liked this video, I was just reading these type of recipes wondering if they taste any good. Amanda suggested 9oz so I will try that, but was good to know about these experiments!
I’ve made a butter beer poke cake with cake mix and cream soda and then poking holes in it and filled them with caramel. Then I decorated with Harry Potter themes colors and little white chocolate decorations. It is honestly really good I totally recommend
My dad made that as a joke for a birthday - the ketchup cake part is surprisingly alright. Just ends up with kind of a cinnamon-y taste, somehow? The mustard frosting, though - oh my god it's some of the worst stuff I've ever tasted.
You should revisit this idea with 9oz of soda instead of 12 and try different flavors. Cherry Dr Pepper and Devil's Food, then add maraschino cherries on top, Green Cake mix with Mountain Dew, AngelCake with Grape and dealers choice on Cake 4.
It's good if you use chocolate or vanille cake mix with coca cola and those canned sherries. Baked in an open fire. We had that at scouting twice a year bc it's amazing
I've just watched several of these videos and I've finally worked out who he reminds me of: a combination of Duckie from Pretty In Pink and Harry from 3rd Rock From The Sun.
ash24 lay23 nope not always! Here in France it’s not that common, I also found accidentally vegan cake mix in the uk and in the us you can apparently use Duncan Hines dairy free cake mix :)
Andrija Denić Wtf vegans are great they don't put all that shit in their body that other eaters do. Sometimes it isn't even their choice they have to because of allergies and medical reasons. You should think before you type and not be a dick.
Every flavor you tasted after the lemon was progressively more contaminated by remnants of the previous flavors in your mouth and on the spoon. You should taste them again but use a palate cleanser (water is fine), as well as separate utensils for a more accurate judgement.
You can literally do this with plain water. Cake mix just needs liquid, it doesn't actually require oil/eggs/etc. as it already has everything it needs. Also, your cakes are sticky because of the sugar content due to soda + cake mix. Using the 'water/dairy, oil, eggs' additions make for a richer, more complex flavor that helps to cut the sugar. You can try using a diet soda, or sparkling water - or by actually cutting the soda by 2 oz to make a thicker/denser and less sweet cake. This recipe is really good for doing cake-balls. I like doing chocolate cake + cherry soda and then using homemade cream cheese icing so I can control the level of sweetness.
putting soda in cake has been a thing for a while. My mom used to make me 7up cakes for my birthday as a kid all the time! (strawberry cake or yellow/angel food mix is great w 7up).
I was making soda cakes over 10 years ago lol It was a great weight watchers recipe. Sugar free cake mix and a diet soda for a sugar free delicious desert! And it makes the cake amazingly moist!
0:22 ...for the longest - if you say goodbye to me tonight (uhuuhh) there would stil bee music left to write... what else could I do? Im so inspired by you; that hasn't happened for the loooongest time
