ABOUT ME
I’m 34 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus and one incredible girl, Bonnie. You will see them all on this channel!

The TePari is a surprise to me, a non-sheep guy. Sorting automatically into 3 groups by weights while you and Lizzie keep the flow going. Saves you from hiring more help, and moves things rapidly. What a great machine. Glad you’re getting a good price. That should ease some of the financial stress. A little stress helps propel you, but when it causes bodily injury it is too much. You need a break, Cammy.

For me a lamb is worth a gamble to feed if you can nett around £140 a head for them, Feed on and cash the bigger cheque in 4-6 weeks time. when grass runs low later in autumn who could sell the remainder as stores and still do well. Every gambler knows the secret to surviving is knowing when to hold or fold! Great content keep up the great work with the videos.

you need to start taging lambs earlier with their mother so you know who is who and which ewe is producing the larger lambs faster (yes single get bigger faster but most of those should have already be gone to market) scan those that get joint ill and they are never kept as breeding stock - it is harder as you lamb outside and with you working off farm so much and Lizzie with three kids to take care of there is only so many hours in a day - if you are paying to lease land you have to get the very best out of it

As someone who also lambs outside, alternatively, notice which ewes are giving you less desirable lambs and get rid of both lamb and ewe. Recording lambs to ewes is a job of work outdoors.

I would think it nearly impossible to catch every single ewe lambing outside. He has hundreds upon hundreds! It would take absolutely forever and there's so much to do in a day, he would have to hire someone just to do that every day.

So glad to see your decision making. So difficult getting it right. I’m not sure if it was a busy day at market or not, but if it was busier maybe you wouldn’t have achieved the prices you did. So many things to consider, especially the feed costs and uncertainty of the weather and grass growth. I’m no farmer obviously, but if, at the end of the day, this gives you a little more time for yourself, Lizzie and the family, then it’s an investment in the uncertainty of the winter months to come. You have had a difficult year, along with so many farmers, and you always have the time for others. I hope this will mean a bit less pressure for now. Rest up … if that’s not a stupid thing to say to a busy farmer. God bless you all.

your last question: would you hold them to sell them - sit down with a spread sheet and calculator - price to hold them - feed, rent, your time etc and compare to selling them with the current prices - did the prices go up last year around Christmas something like 16 weeks away, what were those prices to work against from last year - you will be going away scanning around Christmas and Lizzie doing that on her own with 3 kids in tow - is it better to get them away, take the money and get the pressure off

Hope you've bought a farm! Worth a couple spots. Would sell all stores asap then figure out if it's cost effective creep feeding the slow growth lambs to finish faster because at their current rate of gain on summer grass they'll take 2 months to finish. As grass quality's going down so will the average gain per day on your lambs, might not be ready until Christmas on grass only. You don't want to stress your fields as you need the grass for your ewes in lamb. Too bad your Te Pari can't talk, it might put in it's 2 cents on your dilemma it's so clever.

I think I would take half & keep half to finish. Then compare at the end of the season. This should give you a decent baseline to work with for upcoming years. Then that model would be able to be adjusted according to the many other factors involved. Just my thoughts. ❤

You are stressed, grass is going to run out, you have upcoming hernia surgery and Lizzie is juggling 3 small children. Sell those store lambs, get your numbers down and you'll be able to produce your fat lambs well until the end of the year.

It's good to reduce the flock numbers a bit ahead of you getting hernia surgery. After the op you will be significantly reduced in mobility and in lifting ability. You must take the decisions which prioritise your health just now.

I agree about finishing the rest of the Lambs yourself, Cammy. My Intuition says that when they are bigger, the price will make the efforts and investment worth it [feeding creep, rotating to get the best grass into them while it's still available, and of course, jaggs as they need them, foot baths etc] will still be worth it. Even the wee lambs look really good tho, to me. Of course I am not there, can't check their condition by feel, but they all looks bright, alert, and fleshy, even the smaller ones. So keep them all and sell them as they bulk out.

I didn’t even know what a store lamb was until halfway through the vlog 😂 I have no idea what to do, but as a doctor, I’d say make sure you can heal up well after the hernia surgery. That way you won’t have to do it again!

If you have the grass available, I would just keep taking the fat lambs off the top and keep the lighter lambs grazing. To me the variable is do you have the grass/feed available, if you do I'd keep feeding the lighter lambs and taking the fat lambs off. Basically if the feed is available, the smaller lambs should have less competition for the feed and should then improve the rate of gain as they're not being pushed around or off the feed. The very bottom of the lambs will probably not get much improvement, but reducing the pressure should give those that have the ability to improve to put the weight on. If the cull ewes drew good money, I would sort as many as I could now and send them to town. At this point all they're doing is eating the grass your productive ewes should be eating. The above info is probably worth exactly what you're paying for it, but you asked. Thanks for the video, always cool to watch these.

Run them all through the scales and look at the daily weight gains, anything you think isn’t growing fast enough, send them store and put your feed into the good doers, technically they should grow even quicker with less competition especially with weather conditions you mentioned. You got the gear that gives you the data!

Absolutely correct view of what you should do in my opinion - sell light weight lambs as stores ASAP. When we used to fatten and finish 250 + dairy bulls for beef we were were weighing fortnightly. We set a floor weight each week so anything that fell below this weight was immediately despatched as we found they could not grow fast enough to be economically profitable. Remember Food Conversion Efficiency with all fattening stock falls as animals get bigger (Heavier) and older. Autumn grown grass feed value falls away rapidly as the year progresses to little more than green water (to my mind) and the animals maintenance demands are steadily increasing with poor weather and increasing body weight. Without access to silage and green high energy fodder such as swedes, turnips, kale etc eventually their growth rate will drop down such that most weight gain will be due to increasing body frame size and organs increasing to match, NOT, increasing flesh covering. In fact they will likely stand still or even possibly fall back.

@@bobb6342 your adding cost to smaller slower growing animals over a longer period. Be less profit in them, especially since Cammy isn’t set up for sheds and hoppers. Send the stores off, finish the better lambs quicker, then load back up on good store lambs and make some more money!

Sounds like you got a fabulous price per head…..I’m no farmer, but, it sounds good. For a kg of Lamb Cutlets on the Gold Coast, Queensland, I can pay between $AUD 59 ish to $AUD 69 tops, and I am only talking about a purchase at a Butcher. I prefer not to purchase at the big monopolising (if there’s such a word) food stores for the simple reason that they are NOT REQUIRED (by trading laws) to have a Butcher on site at every store in the meat department! And yet, a BUTCHER SHOP MUST HAVE ONE ON SITE AT ALL TIMES DURING TRADING HOURS. I THINK THOUGH, YOU DESERVE A M7CH HIGHER PRICE 😊😊😊😊 just ‘cause!! Bonney is looking beautiful and healthy and growing just as fast as the woolly friends. As for wee Jock and Angus….so no more ….. you and Lizzy are to be very proud of your accomplishments indeed.❤️🇦🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you have the feed to finish them and don't need the money straight away then keep them. All the hard work is already done and another 25 pound per head over a few hundred lambs is a lot of money in the end

Depends on your grass situation. So long as you can keep them on good grass, I think you are better off finishing them. As the grass becomes poorer quality, more are sent to market. It doesn't pay to supplement the grass.

Cammy, I would actually sell another third of the stock. Winters are hard, grass is going away, and the prices are decent. I would absolutely keep 2/3 to finish and collect that money now. If it's sitting in the bank, it's drawing interest thereby making you more money.

I think your best consideration is with grass available. If you keep them and run low on grass it will set you behind on what you keep. If you sell and have better grazing will it benefit long term.

I'd say price per kilo is still relevant. It all comes down to how much feed one has available. By selling those store lambs you've freed up feed to finish the rest of the lambs off faster and better.

Always have money and grass is the advice I got. The first thing I would do is figure out how much grass I have by using poly wire to meet out grass daily to weekly. Then I would use supplementation to balance the protein energy ratio of the grass to maximize gain. In California, I we are blessed to have almond hulls to add energy without disrupting the rumen and I use a 20% protein pellet with distillers grains, safflower meal, rice bran and wheat mids for the protein. Sometime could you go through how you manage your grass?

If the price for selling lambs store or fat is much of a muchness when needing to add extra weight to the stores, does selling your stores reduce the cost of wintering your ewe and give you more twins? Lots to consider, I prefer to not spend it in Spring, or spend as little as possible, then I'm not sweating wondering will I get repaid in Autumn.

It is ok to bring your lambs to a higher weight but will you bite into your reserves of grass that you badly need later on in the year and into the new year It is a balancing act and sometimes we get it wrong but when all the gears mesh there is money to be made Good luck with your lambs they are a lovely looking bunch Will you attend the Ploughing this year in Ireland ?

I would look at the growth rate and think about which lambs are growing the best and why. are there some small ones who just aren't going to gain on weight? or is the a growth rate the slows at some point where there is no more benefit to keeping them. and then like the comment earlier it depends a lot on the grass available to feed them without having to supplement them much or at all.

The way the trade has gone you’d have maybe been better selling the 36-38s the same day store. Hindsight and all that though! Hopefully the fat lifts in the next few weeks and keeping them pays off. Fit lambs with weight are still selling well despite the averages quoted.
