ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus. You will see them all on this channel!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

We fed our lambs from weaning through to market. Not massive amounts but likely 500-750 gms of oats daily. We found that it got them to market earlier while the price was higher. We also found that it would put a nice finish on them. This was with large framed Suffolk, Columbia and NCC plus various crosses of the above. All in all we found that for every dollar spent on feed it returned close to 2. Should be noted that this was in a much dryer climate where the grass is going down hill fast from late July on. On grass we would struggle to get 200 gms a day in gain after Aug 1.

@robberntson8934 good insight, are you stateside? Ayrshire grows unreal amounts of grass, nearly 10 months a year, albeit not at the same rate or quality for each of those months.

I'd say that feeding the Lambs to finish them heavy makes sense, and should provide a handsome return, Cammy. Your lambs do look good, but giving them a little more flesh cannot possibly hurt. And the new tupps, finding a purebred Tupp breed that will give you nicer lambs, also a really good idea. Those Welsh Mules were gorgeous big lambs, maybe try to breed some with their tupp breed?

As you say a good finish will net you more profit. £15 a head difference, you’d probably need half that for your feed but then away earlier so less in worms, Labour, grass gets longer to rest, better dung etc. I’ve got to say watched your video going to the crystalyx factory last year and you converted me! Used to buy the farm shop own brand and a ratio of 1 bucket to 20 head of sheep the own brand one being caked lasted a week-10 days tops, for about double the price and same ratio the crystalyx is lasting 21-26 days so much better value for money long term as they can’t gnaw it like cake!

A boy Cammy another good video 👍. If you can get lambs on to feed just before weaning, they keep condition & thrive better after weaning. They won't eat as much grass so it will be easier keep grass under them too. Like you said, if you get a tenner a head extra per lamb, it will easily pay for the feeding.

Size doesn't equal taste. The best lamb I've ever tasted was blackface lamb from the Isle of Harris in the late 1980's...probably half they size of lambs being produced today on the mainland. But I remember that flavour to this day. I can have Beltex lamb from an excellent butcher today, and have forgotten the flavour a week later. Of course, not all lambs go for meat :p

Here in America you can dry lot lambs the same way you do beef cattle and feed strictly a grower and finisher mix. Corn,wheat,silage,cotton seed,sunflower seed, and some alfalfa. It’s worth the money buying mixed feed in bulk for the results you get at market. Dry lotting is where they only eat what you feed them same as cattle in the finishing stages they are usually fed out in 90 days before sale or slaughter

It's hard to know with the feeding, probably makes sense the year we had. Feeding is also time consuming, you won't be long putting a 10 a head into them. I am only farming 10 years, everyone seems to do things differently and everyone is right :-). I,m no expert I only keep 30 ewes and buy in around 2 hundred stores.

Really interesting question Cammy, re feed. It may work if you stagger it. Feed in July your most forward 100 lambs, then August the next 200 to 300 hundred,etc. Those that wouldn't finish this side of Christmas need to go else where no feed. As would any breeding stock. If you didn't target your creep feeding the costs would spiral as you'd be feeding 800 lambs for 4 months. With store lambs at £130 plus would they not be better off grass fat or if not in the store ring? It's the eternal question!
@TheSheepGame

Feed them when the market is up like right now but if it dips then you are going to have to sell them whatever shape they’re in otherwise you’re piling feed into a lamb that’s not going to make you anything. The fact that you are not and do not usually feed your lambs shows that you are in the land of milk and honey truly.

When/how do you decide to move some of your ewes out of your flock to market and replace them with some of your ewe lambs? I assume you keep records on all your ewes to know when their productivity declines. Is this something you are doing every year? Change out 15% of the flock annually or such?
@TheSheepGame
@TheSheepGame 12 дней назад
We usually check them before tupping time to see that the bags are okay all their teeth are present. We also mark any sheep at lambing time that we think won't do another year lambing. There's not a set amount, it's just sheep to sheep. I know some farmers move them on when they get to a certain age.

@keithroberts4559

Feasible it is, every sheep farmer in New Zealand runs cattle along side the sheep, some even have deer in the mix. Goats unless milking ones are classed as feral and end up as dog tucker. Pre 1980s you could get 1 shilling or 1x.303 round of ammunition per goat tail.

Comparing your sheep to fed sheep, or anybody else's sheep isn't really a good comparison. Comparing your results this year vs last is a much better comparison. The only way feeding them would work out in my mind is if you spent less than 7 per to feed, considering time, effort, fuel and whatever else you would count. As mentioned earlier, if your lambs are better this year than last is probably the best comparison...it's your results that count.
