Hi Pete, I love your videos. I wolud like to ask you a video (or playlist) about the mokey posture (mechanical advantage position). I send you greeting from Argentina.

I find there is a big gap between learning and applying general Alexander principles and the many micro movements entailed in playing piano. This is why Juilliard has Alexander teachers who specialise in giving music students instructions at their instruments. Most of us don’t have access to these teachers. I wondered whether you would be able to give a couple of more detailed videos on approaches you use at the piano when playing a piece of music?

Definitely. For me, the technique gets really interesting when you apply it to a high level skill such as piano playing. I'm lucky enough to teach some really talented pianists at the RNCM conservatoire in Manchester, UK and it's so satisfying to be able to help them develop using the technique. I'm hoping to start recording some more instrument specific videos soon, thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Pete, I’m benefiting from your video instructions on youtube and Udemy. Do you have any Alexander techniques to target multiple knots/tension points between the shoulder blades? Your tennis ball suggestion works as a temporary fix. There are Feldenkrais exercises that target this area but I wondered about an Alexander approach?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 2 года назад
Hi Donald, really glad that you are benefiting! The Alexander approach to those symptoms would be to identify the habits that are causing them. With knots between the shoulder blades, the cause is almost always related to the muscles in the front of the body over stretching those upper back muscles. The tennis ball technique is, as you say, a good way to get a temporary fix which then gives you the chance to try to catch the habits that are affecting the balance between muscles in front and back of the body. I found that a combination of semi-supine/constructive rest and also any Alexander Technique exercises that helped me to learn how to use my arms without pulling forwards really helped. It's also useful to see these specific areas of discomfort/knots or poor coordination as part of a more general pattern of body 'use'. In other words, as standing, sitting etc become more balanced and less stiff, the shoulders will be better supported and less likely to develop these issues. The exercise in this video is a good example of improving general coordination while including the arms. Another one I really like is the one I teach in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6GquFRq1LtA.html Hope you manage to make some improvements! Might be worth trying the Feldenkrais exercise but trying to apply Alexander Technique principles to it as well. Always good to steal from other disciplines!

Liking or any other interaction seems to help with the videos reaching more people so I'm always grateful for anyone taking the time to like/subscribe/comment etc. Sorry to hear that you fell and yes, everything is connected so it's important to look after your whole self. Especially if you've had an accident!
