What does Alexander Technique say about tongue, jaw and mouth posture? A lot of my tension seems to be coming from how i am “resting” my tongue on the roof of my mouth.
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture Год назад
These are places that many people struggle with. The mouth is hugely affected by stress and many of us have developed habits of making repetitive, unhelpful movements such as pushing the tongue into strange shapes! As with any specific point of tension that you notice, the trick is always to try to 'zoom out'. The bit of tension you notice is always part of a wider pattern and sometimes, it's much easier to try to disrupt the pattern somewhere else in the body. For example, every time you notice tension in the mouth, don't try to do anything with the mouth but pay attention to your balance, breathing, and other general places. Once the overall pattern of tension is inhibited, you will hopefully also notice the mouth tension disappear. It's this 'indirect approach' that makes the AT so effective! Hope that makes sense!

@@MovementandPosture thanks for this response! In Alexander Technique, do you place the tongue on the roof of mouth? Or are you saying that once you relax other areas, the tongue will go where it needs to be? Sometimes on the roof, sometimes not?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture Год назад
@@arielenergyhealer3705 That's correct. Assuming no medical problem, your tongue knows where to rest if you let it. As you reduce your tension habits, you will notice your body resetting back to a more natural state.
@arielenergyhealer3705
@arielenergyhealer3705 Год назад
@@MovementandPosture ok yes, i got it now. If I “float” (relax all tension with aliveness), then, yes, you are right. The tongue goes naturally to the roof of my mouth without forcing it there. Interesting. Thank you!

My right side of the neck and and shoulder and armpit areas are really tight and I don’t know how to fix it. I tried stretches but the tightness just comes back. My left side is not stiff at all only right side.
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 8 месяцев назад
Stretches are often ineffective because as you pull against the tight muscle, it just fights back harder. The Alexander Technique approach is to try to stop the habit of tightening it in the first place. Then it will have a chance to loosen and come into balance. If you find this exercise too challenging, I would start with one of the constructive rest videos on this channel.

Pete, how is the course different than the videos on your channel?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture Год назад
Hi Ariel, the course is a structured guide through learning the basics of the Alexander Technique. It's divided up into short lessons which build up from simple principles into more complex movements. It's what I wish I had known when I started learning the Technique! The idea was to have a structured program for beginners so that they can then make more effective use of the YT videos. The other benefit of the course is that RU-vid can't keep sticking adverts all over it! 😆 Some people use the course to supplement lessons that they are taking with another teacher (who maybe doesn't talk as much as I do!) My style of teaching is to keep explaining and talking to my students because that's the way I learn best. If you've got a good understanding of the technique already, you may not need the course as there's so much in the YT videos to work on. Have a check of the course structure and see whether you think you need it. Any other questions, let me know!
@arielenergyhealer3705
@arielenergyhealer3705 Год назад
Thank you for this explanation, Pete! If I have RU-vid Premium (no ads), how is the course different than the videos here? Do you mean that the difference is the way the videos are laid out, from easiest movement to more complicated, but they are the same videos? Are there additional tips or videos in the course? And, yes! I love your style of teaching. The explanations really help me to understand the mindset behind the movements. Your words make sense to me. And yes, I am a beginner at this. In my RU-vid search, your teaching style resonates with me the best. I am really getting this! I’m in the phase where I am constantly noticing old patterns and resetting. It’s so interesting and fun!

The videos in the course are all different from the YT ones except for one constructive rest video which I repurposed! They are all quite short and focussed on a specific topic with an explanation and a practical activity or 2 for each, often with options to make them more difficult. I avoided waffling on about the history of the Alexander Technique too much which tends to bog down a lot of what has been published in the past! There should be 2 or 3 free preview lessons on the site if you want to see what they look like.

@@MovementandPosture I’m in! I’m loving the course already! For those of us undiagnosed ADHD people, haha, these short videos are keeping my attention span! I love how the course is building from the basics upward. Thank you so much! It’s fantastic!

@@arielenergyhealer3705 amazing. Thanks! So helpful to get feedback. Let me know if there's anything else you would like to see on the course as I'm planning to update it once I've had enough feedback. It's lifetime access so any new material will just pop up in there!
