Congratulations to Brad. The first person ever to slowly sway their body side to side while listening to Battery. Experts around the world said it couldn't be done....#builtdifferent
Lex really gets metal. Also she’s musically inclined. She can a hear the difference in the intricate notes. If she were to learn to play an instrument she would learn quicker than the average person.
@GeneralCrust Like many music lovers, it's not so much that she's a metal head, she's a music head. She feels great songs in multiple styles. Brad just doesn't seem nearly as dialed in to music. Some feel music deeply, some don't. It's a gift.
@@kevinkesterson1806 i think its just a case of lex being artistically inclined, and brad achademic in nature. Lex feels the art, brad looks for the meaning in the art. Its usually determined by which side of your brain is more dominant. Nothing wrong with either of course :)
Cliff Burton, was a classically trained musician. He had an immense influence on the band's composition, time changes and rhythm progressions. Unfortunately, he died on tour for this album.
Rip Cliff One of Metals best Bassist in my book!! Metallica never put out better albums after he died, the Black album was good but definitely nothing after that album was in my opinion. Seen Metallica 89' 90' & 91' Excellent & pure Fire 🔥🤘🎸🎼❤ you should do the entire And Justice For All & Master of Puppets Albums, showing how much Cliff's influences show Beautifully!! 😍 🤘🎸🎼
It's definitely about Battery Street in San Fran but with a secondary meaning. I've heard them talk about it in an interview. Battery Street had several venues that catered to the thrash / heavy metal scene and they considered themselves a family versus the hairspray and makeup glam metal. To quote James, "these were our people". "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me. Battery, battery. "Lashing out the action, returning the reaction Weak are ripped and torn away" and "Circle of destruction, hammer comes crushing Powerhouse of energy" refer to the mosh pits.
@@tristantknight hey I may be wrong, but the San Fran theory does not makes sense, even though it’s a kool connection. Does the band talk about it? I can’t find it, if it’s out there.
@@MichaelLayne702 "The theme of the song revolves around the San Francisco thrash scene of the 1980s. The most prominent club played by Metallica was the Old Waldorf located at 444 Battery Street in downtown San Francsico. The tone of the song is one of familial ties and the positive release of energy through the common interest of metal. The lyric "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me" is a statement that while society at large doesn't understand the scene, those within it (i.e. "the family") will fiercely defend it as a show of solidarity against the glam scene that was popular in the Los Angeles area."
@@firecrakka iv heard that theory before, and I don’t think it makes sense, like I said it’s a really kool connection, but the theme of the album seems to address things like addiction and abuse. Cannot kill the family, battery is in me. To mean that a reference to when a domestic abuser blames his family every time he lashes out in anger, he justifies it by blaming them, but he can’t kill his family, the battery lives in him, therefore creating a circle of destruction when the hammer comes crushing.
Lex… I’m telling you…. “Dyers Eve” is a song you will absolutely love. It’s fast, drumming impeccable and amazing guitar solo. For Brad great lyrics to chew on.
This song would be a metal equivalent of a "club banger" - it's meaning actually isn't real deep, it's mostly just talking about the violent and aggressive energy of mosh-pits and metal concerts, and the tempo and aggressive sound is meant to whip concert-goers into a frenzy.

@@michaelklein5793 LOL, been a fan since kill em all or what Metallica wanted to call metal up your ass. I knew that Battery was about Battery street. I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the bar (Waldorf) so I looked it up. I also wanted to post something that made somewhat coherent sense. Anyway I feel like I've given a troll to much of my time already. Peace ✌️
Cliff Burton, the bassist for a majority of their early years, was super into classical music. It heavily influenced his songwriting so you're 100% on point there
I'm not a Lars hater at all, but he really does speed things up too much sometimes, especially on Fuel. If I was James I'd be mad that I could barely get the lyrics out.
That is literally why I learned to play the guitar because I can hear every guitar note and on top of that I make guitar riffs and solos up in my head all the time. Physically I can barely play 1/10th of what I think up in my mind because when I play I go down a whole other rabbit hole it is like a constant background in my mind. I have 4 kids, work 40+ hrs a week and do all the finances, shopping and I still make music in my head almost non stop, then when I get time to play it is like a huge release.
Same brother, learned to play because my grandfather used to tour with legends like George Jones and Johnny paycheck and l just wanted his approval. Now I've been playing for 15 years and the release I get through music is more than I could ever get by just venting my feelings, it's more of a therapeutic experience than anything for me.
Metallica was known as the kings of transitioning in their songs in the 80s! Not many bands in those days could do this seamlessly as Metallica did!🤘🏽🤘🏽
The whole Master of Puppets album is a masterpiece, both musically and lyrically. There is a reason this album was the first metal recording selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
"Battery", synergy between the audience and band going nuts. Nothing like being a part of it. (addictive to the point of becoming a way of life). \m/ ^!^ \m/
You guys would definitely love their songs "Bleeding me", "Outlaw Torn" and maybe try their instrumentals "Orion" from the same album as Battery. Either way awesome reaction! As much as you listen to them and rock/metal in general you will understand how raw and pure music was made! Love the "Lyric version-Genius-Live Performance"! Have a great day!
Since you like the classical aspects of Metallica’s music, I suggest “No Leaf Clover” live version. The song was written with the intention to be played with a symphony. The live version is Metallica playing with the San Francisco Symphony with conductor and all.
I love watching Brad slowly come to like metal... And everyone Loves to See lex's energy ramp up with the music. You guys are a joy to watch. Much Love.
Lex, when you are talking about how James pronounces words, it is a singer's "signature." Singer's pronounce consonants and vowels very different. You are experiencing his tone. Love your educated reactions!! It's easy to tell that you have a strong musical background. .
I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching all the Metallica videos!! I had almost forgotten how badass Master of puppets is!! This album came out when I was in junior high!!!!
My favorite Metallica song of all time. But it's not an easy choice. Ride the Lightning & Master of Puppets were almost living breathing entities. As a teenager those albums became as important to me as my closest friends 😁
I haven't seen the full reaction but lyrical, the song is about the energy given between Metallica and the fans during a live performance, meaning that Metallica gives energy and they get it back from the fans. So it's like their whole live performance is a big battery. Edit: Nevermind, you guys looked at the genius lyrics.
This song just reminded me how effing great this album was. If Metallica had broken up after the death of Cliff, and all they left behind were those first three albums, they'd still be legendary.
@@GlueChickeN10 oh boo hoo. With or without Cliff those albums after MOP were gonna happen. Cliff loved blues and would have fucking loved Load and Reload.
Listened to this everyday on the way to surf or to the skatepark in S FL, just gets you pumped up to shred. I knew Lex was gonna explode after the intro. Great job you two.
Having a great time watching Lex on her metal journey. Brad, you're getting there. I wish I could go back to when I first heard these songs like y'all.
What I absolutely love about this channel is that I haven’t once been told to “like, comment and subscribe.” I choose to like, comment and subscribe because their content is soo good.
Lex, you're spot on with the classical element of Metallica's music. Metal as a genre is heavily influenced by Classical music. The drummer Lars composes their music and pieces the guitar riffs, solos and drums much like a Classical composer does. That's one big reason why Metallica is very unique. Plus, they are the band that started the genre of Thrash Metal.
I love how Lex is always feeling the metal vibe! ... and Brad is always moving to the beat... before even started! I love your reactions! Greetings from Guatemala, saludos! 🤘🤘
Lmao!!! Lex, the smile that comes on your face when your listening to metal is part of my life force!!! Brad, you’re the shit. How you do your best to find a way to connect is honorable… You really do try and find your pocket. And you’re honest when it’s just not your thing - that’s all we can ask for. An honest opinion/reaction. We love you guys!!! Don’t ever stop.
Since Lex loves guitars so much you guys should react to Joe Satriani-Surfing with the Alien or Satch Boogie. It's a heavy guitar instrumental. I bet Lex rocks out hard. Peace and love.
Back in the day-- Metallica was known as speed metal. Battery is a club metal bands play at-- and it is also their sheer, powerful, energetic performance style.
Cliff was classically trained and composed this album and lighting. Much of Justice was being composed when he was killed. Cliff is who made Metallica into the success we see today. He taught them how to harmonize and construct a song. Even through the sold-out and went commercial you can still see what he taught them in the music today.
From what I remember they said this sound was about the crowd and the energy that is shared between them and the band that fuels the performance and overalls experience of everyone there
If you're going to do another double react to Metallica, the live in Moscow performance is a must. It's like watching metal gods play an anthem of violence in the middle of a battlefield.
I love the concept of 2 REACTIONS, because there's often debate about which version should be reacted to! You certainly got your money's worth going to see Metallica in '89, it seems. Think about the physical exertion of performing just this one song!
The purists hate it but you've got to check out some of the songs from their S&M live concert. Truly amazing (Some orchestral stuff in there for you Lex)
At the end of the song, its like my ears always automatically expect to instantly hear the beginning of Master of Puppets because that was the order of the songs on the album. Love the live reaction.
This is about them rehearsing and hanging out on Battery street. And how their crew was unstoppable at the time. Typical early 20's stuff that just ROCKS!
Wow, I just noticed I didn't subscribe yet. Forgive me for the error of my ways. I like seeing Lex being converted into a metalhead and love how Brad is being so openminded and also slowly warming up to metal. Can't wait until you guys discover Slayer, that will be a ride and a half :D
back in 89/90, when i was about 14/15, I used to dj my school discos and the youth club discos. I started this song one night, right after playing a 3 song slow-set (for the couples), anywho... all hell broke loose when the mosh started. after it was over a friend of mine told me he nearly had his leg broke in the mosh after falling on the floor in the middle of it. it is still hailed as the greatest mosh ever at a school disco in our town cool Respect & Peace
Lex really has incredible music instincts, especially considering ( as far as known) she’s not a trained musician or lifelong fan of metal. A lot of metal is basically partly classical music but with abrasive and distorted textures and timbre
Check out Yngwie Malmsteen's, "Far Beyond the Sun". Studio version from original album. This dude is a master of combining classical with metal. Heavily influenced by classical violin.
Also Lex! You are 100% correct. Metal music has a ton of influence from classical music. Which most people don’t figure out until they’ve been a metal fan for years! New subscriber here!!
This a song about being at a metal concert. Imagine playing music this fast for 2 hours per concert and being in your late 30's and early 40's. The guys from Metallica are now in their late 50's approaching 60's. Just saying.
euh, in this live version they were far from late 30's or early 40 's it was the Seattle version in 1989, Hetfield for exemple was 26 years old.. they were all in their absolute prime.
You guys should react to the late great Wayne static and his band static X. A song called 'the only' by static X would be a good place to start.. Wayne static was really unique with his voice and had one of the best looks in metal ever. I've been missing him and playing a lot of static lately. Come on guys the only by static X...🤘🤘😎🤘🤘
Metallica in OVERKILL mode!!! Awesome! I can honestly say this song opened my mind to metal and the whole album made me a metalhead! And that performance... like Lex said, it was like they were gonna get the guitars on fire! Great reaction guys, loved the 2 in 1 video!
That's cool that you did 2 reactions. I've never seen anyone else do this. I hope you do this more often. Great to experience a song both ways. Thanks.
"Battery" is the name of a street that Metallica first started doing shows. This song is about the roots of Metallica. Cannot kill the family, battery is found in me.
Love these double reaction videos with the lyrics followed by a live video! There are so many times with the lyric video or an official video that I'm thinking to myself " If they could only see this live" and thanks to youtube we can! Great format I hope you guys keep doing these because I grew up in those days and it's hard to describe it to people how intense the rock/metal shows were but a well-filmed live video gives you the best look back! A lot of times the screaming was so loud that your ears would crackle just from the loud excitement and screaming of the crowd noise! You occasionally get that at an NFL game in a dome with a rabid crowd but without the energy of the concert! Keep'em coming, love you guys! Sean
Whenever Lex starts talking about classical music, I really want to see you guys listen to Yngwie. Just avoid any of the live videos because they all suck (especially with an orchestra because you really need to know the source material before you dive into his + orchestra performances), best to just stick to the studio stuff with him. As for what song, anything off the first album (Rising Force).
Saturday is a street in San Francisco where they lived and everybody party there. In the song The referring to the energy that they get from the crowd and they give back to the crowd during the show.
Half right, Battery is a street in SF and there was a recording studio there. The band did not live there. They lived in the East Bay, El Cerrito, Ca...first three albums were practiced there aka Metallica mansion
Lex you’re just a metalhead now. Your smile in this and many other songs simply reflects what is going on in your head for funfair. I just love it. Greetings from a metalhead from good old Germany
God this CD....all these years I've heard it and it NEVER GETS OLD! It's raw...aggressive...it's a fucking semi driving right through your living room METAL UP YOUR ASS METAL POWER!!!
Double meaning. The street where they played in the beginning was battery street. Then add in us- the fans- feeding their energy and the band feeding the fans. Circle of destruction- the mosh pit. Cannot kill the family- you can’t kill the Metallica/ metal family. To this day at their concerts they welcome “first time Metallica concert goers” to the Metallica family.
The symbiotic relationship between the band and the crowd, circle of destruction, the energy generated at a thrash show in the mosh pit, that shit was fun as hell
