Ian - It's fantastic that, no matter how extensive one's experience, one can still have those 'Aha!' moments. IMO, that's what makes playing an instrument a lifelong journey, and pleasure. Thanks! 👍

Thanks, I thought I was the only one doing this and was trying to break the habit. Very useful for cutting off a bent note, allowing a silent release but having the pick in position to play again immediately.

Years ago I attended a national guitar workshop in Austin, took a blues course with Matt Smith. He showed us the trick… Start with the first finger on the root and your in major. Start with the third finger on the root and You're in minor.

I think you had a video a few years ago explaining pressing your fretting fingers on the board for as long as you want the note to ring out. (rather than holding the note down in anticipation of plucking it and muting it with your picking hand.) I've used your technique so often that I mute with both hands effortlessly without thinking about it anymore. Thanks for the great videos! (...more trey!)

Special sauce. My biggest problem with maj pent is trying to get min blues box shapes out of my fingers and ear after 10 years of playing nothing but that.

Another great lesson. I appreciate your style and humor. One can never have too many muting tools can they? Tagging the m3 trick also works to toggle out the BB box. Its easily accessible on both sides of it. Part of the Freddy box if I ever get those two straight and its unison note on the b string. Hope I said that correctly and was somewhat clear. Thank you

I think the 2nd part will help me with the solo on Cray's Strong Persuader. Timing those pauses has been difficult at my level.

Dammit! Done it again - you’ve triggered a chain of thought on how to think of scales - that I can apply to blues and jazz; I forsee a lot of sleepless nights ahead as I think it through.... Rather than thinking of the pentatonic patterns that always made me freeze - I can just think of a spider’s web pattern centred around the root note - pretty similar, but different!
@Mikeshawtoday

A great trick for the flute too in the E maj pentatonic. Now I can throw in an A natural, G natural, and land on E. It sounds cool and bluesey. So for A maj pentatonic - it would be D nat, C nat, A, I think. Going by ear. Is that right? Trying to memorize the sound of this sequence. So it's the last three notes of the minor pentatonc going downwards (to root).

Stitch. That was great! Can you do another lesson from the opposite perspective? For those of us that drift into the minor bluesy sound and have a hard time finding the major Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers smooth major sound.

Wow I have never thought about muting the strings using my finger-what a great concept! I have been practicing using my palm to mute the other strings while playing-thereby muting the current string as well-is there anything wrong with this method vs the method you described?

How are you holding your guitar? I'm picking up the electric after always playing a nylon with a foot stool and am going nuts because I feel like I'm chasing the neck around and having to support the instrument with my left hand or am dragging it back to where I want it to be. I'm trying to get to a position really close to what you are playing but I don't see how you are supporting the instrument. This is about as basic as it gets, so I hope you can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Do you have a video about how to stop playing shapes and start playing notes? I can play in any key, all over the neck but it's because I know the scale and triad shapes but I don't really know how to get the notes/intervals to click. Like, I know HOW to play but I don't know WHAT to play.

Huh? At 3:29 and onward thru the video, you're stopping on E and calling it the third of the E minor pentatonic... I don't grok this.
@StichMethodGuitar
@StichMethodGuitar 3 года назад
I’m stopping on the E but before I do I’m hitting the minor third first, which isn’t naturally in a Major Pentatonic.
