You can bend on acoustic but not as easily. Often the strings are fatter and possibly shorter. Benders tend to play electric with 8s or 9s on the high end.

The easy way to grok mode shapes is put them all in one key (for the 7 diatonic modes at least). Take C key for example (no sharps/flats to write). CDEFGAB Ionian CDEFGAB Major Dorian DEFGABC Minor Phrygian EFGABCD Minor Lydian FGABCDE Major Mixolydian GABCDEF Major Aeolian ABCDEFG Minor Locrian BCDEFGA Minor b5. Learn the shape each creates. Once you learn the shape in C key, they are movable to any key. Each mode is 1 half step away from the next if you play them from the same tonic starting note and in this order 4152637. So Lydian is the sharpest mode. Flat that aug 4th to a normal 4th and you have Ionian mode, flat that maj 7 of Ionian to a min 7 to get Mixolydian, flat the maj 3 to min 3 and Mixo becomes Dorian, Dorian is the only (diatonic) minor scale with a major 6th, so flat that 6th to get Aeolian mode (relative minor of the key), now flat the 2nd of Aeolian to make Phrygian mode, and then flat the 5th of Phrygy to make Locrian mode. Then, if you flat the 1 (tonic) you get back to Lydian mode a half step below where you started (in the next lowest key). Besides in key (diatonic), you can use modes to modulate between keys, like key blending (say chords F C Em + D, playing between C key and G key, or F key and G key). And you can use them to flavor existing chords. Example: A minor is ACE, so if you strum ACE, I could play A Aeolian (ABCDEFG) from C key, A Phrygian (ABbCDEFG) from F key, or A Dorian (ABCDEF# G) from G key over your A minor because none of the notes that change, Bb or F# , effect the chord but make different sounds or flavors, brighter/happier, or darker/sadder. Lastly, there are specific situations where the mode is called for: Dorian over m2(7th) + M5(7th). Phrygian m3 to M4, Lydian M4 to M5, Mixolydian M5 to M4. Honorable mention to Harmonic minor (exotic scale) being played in a minor 145 where the 5 is a Major instead...the sharp 7 of the tonic chord (m1) is the Major 3rd of the 5th chord (M5), hence why to use this mode, but you could simply play harmonic minor (ABCDEFG# ) over that same ACE A minor chord for flavor. I hope this helps.

B is the 5 of E so this is a 5 4 progression

The major sixth is the major third of the parent key, I guess.

There are some guidelines you can agree with or ignore for chord construction, like "it's not a 9th unless over a flat 7. Otherwise it's just an 'add 9' chord". But basically, it's like this for determining the intervals: these will change slightly by mode/scale. Write out a scale in 2 lines, first letter on top, second letter below. This will show all the degrees in 1 line (except the 6th, 4th, 2nd but you'll get those). Using C key: CDEFGAB, I'll write the 2 lines... CEGBDFACEGBDFAC DFACEGBDFACEGBD Now the first chord will be CEG (C major), the 6th, A, is below but the other intervals are spelled out C1E3G5B7D9F11A13 for that chord. D is 2 or 9, F is 4 or 11, A is 6 or 13, not too hard to figure. Second chord is Dm: DFA...DFAC, DFACE, DFACEG, Et cetera. Third chord Em...EGB, EGBD, EGBDF, et cetera. Note that in different modes/exotic scales a few notes/chords will change. Harmonize each and spell each out in 2 lines as above to see the intervals. I hope that makes it easy for you.

Thank you so much Mr. Stich. I have more of a problem than a question. I've been learning guitar for many many years, practicing religiously every day for at least 38 minutes. I've never jammed or played in a band. I'm confident that I have a solid knowledge of music theory as it applies to guitars. I can play rythm an arpeggios. But, God help me, I cannot play solo! I cannot seem to connect with changing chord progressions! What may be my problems? I do know pentatonic scales (major & manor) all five positions! I love your methods, and I've been following you for years. Can you, please help me understand what my problem is? Please, feel free to use me as a Guinea pig in your lessons. Sorry for this long mumbling. Thank you. NIK
