There are many species of wild mint and today we talk about 2 species that you can forage. Like most wild mints their flavor is distinct and these plants also make great medicine. Wild edible Bee Balm or Monarda fistulosa is beneficial to pollinators, like bees as its name suggests. Growing in open fields and on the edges of woods it's very easily distinguished by its unique flowers and a square stem.
The second species of wild mint that you can forage is called Slenderleaf Mountain Mint. This mint is unique in that its flavor is like three different mints combined. Tasting like Wintergreen, Peppermint, and Spearmint it's great for desserts and flavoring extracts. This wild mint is also medicinal as well as edible and is a great plant for beginners to learn and forage in the wild.

I've been wanting to make homemade mouthwash, but my mint didn't come up in my herb bed, so I've been missing a key ingredient. Now I know how to forage for mint thanks to this fantastic tutorial on wild mint plants!!! Many thanks.

Oh yeah we have so much at this place, a local park in my area. After I get home from this field my cat takes over my shoes, plus I give him a little bit of mint leaves to nibble on. I also give him some catnip from the wild that grows here and he loves it! Hopefully you see these plants too, they are beautiful and smell lovely, plus they are very useful! Thanks for commenting bro, I always love seeing you in the comments!

Wow, what a great meadow! I've never seen slender leaf mountain mint, what a little beauty it is. I spotted some bee balm in our area recently, it's quite rare this far north (I'm in western Quebec). It was a brighter, pinkish purple, the colour seems to vary between regions and according to the weather. The plants in my garden, in this really hot summer, are a far deeper purple than they were last year. The whole patch has been humming with bees for a week. I work with bee balm/monarda a LOT. I call it "sweet leaf", which is a closer translation of the Native names according to herbalist Matthew Wood. A tincture of the flowering tops is extremely useful for the symptom of blocked ears/dizziness that some of us get in allergy season. I combine it with eyebright to clear the sinuses, the combination works far better than commercial antihistamines and no side effects. There's a unique sort of buttery feel to the leaves of sweetleaf/beebalm (some more than others). It is so rich in oils that it can actually stimulate the gall bladder, making it good medicine for digestive issues. It's also an excellent treatment for candida and other fungal infections, including bladder infections that don't respond to antibiotics. A "spit poultice" of the chewed flower tops relieves burns and "hot" feeling bug bites; it's been used as a snake bite remedy and I recently cleared up a nasty spider bite with it. I could go on and on .. ;-)

Oh yeah, that meadow is awesome! It has everything from the mints shown here to Milkweed, Wild Quinine, Yellow Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, Queen Anne's Lace, Blazing Star, and so much more! I absolutely love this place I filmed this video and frequently will spend time here just basking in the glory of it all! Wow, I did not know a good portion of what you said was possible with Bee Balm, thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I've heard of Sweet Leaf but tend to not use that term as many are not familiar with it, but awesome information that I'm sure many will love to read. Feel free to share anything you want here Christine, your knowledge is valuable. I have learned quite a bit from reading your comments as I'm sure other people have too. Thank you again for sharing, I always love getting your insights!

You're very welcome Don, glad you enjoyed it! I offer classes within Central Indiana. Classes range from Plant Walks to Private Property Instructionals. The information can be found on my website linked in the about section of my channel if you're interested. I've done classes for a couple small businesses in the area, private individuals, and a small group of Boy Scouts. I very much enjoy doing them, it gives a chance to connect with like minded people. Thanks for asking and I hope this helps!

Don Boehner Josh what area if Central Indiana. I am Lake Station Northern Indiana by the lake. Sure seeing a lot of Bee Balm right now.
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 6 лет назад
Around Indianapolis area. On the homepage of my website there is an embedded Google map with a red polygon that indicates the area I travel to for classes. After looking at Google maps, Lake Station would be about a 2 1/2 hr. drive for me. A bit too far financially unless you would want to work something out. For drives like that I usually charge extra for gas and driving time as my normal class price doesn't cover that if it's in the area indicated on my website. Bee Balm is prolific across the state, we are blessed to live in such a beautiful state with so much available! Thanks for asking Melody and I hope this helps some!

Can I expect to find bee balm in my area? South Louisiana. Also, I have found what I believe to be field mint. Does it have any uses?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 5 лет назад
All mints have a use. They can be used for foods in extract form in desserts and things. They can also be used in soaps or for medicine. The type of mint will dictate its medical uses though and not all mints have a strong mint flavor so be sure to find out what species you have before using it for medicine. The species of bee balm shown here grows in Louisiana, so it exists somewhere in the state. Check field of wildflowers. However its flowering season is probably over there as it just coming to an end here. So you probably won't see the brightly colored flowers. Hope this helps and thanks for asking BroussardHomestead!

Thank you so much for so generously sharing this information. I use mint from my garden for bug bites and ivy rash and it works so better than anything at the drug store. Do these mints work in the same manner? Also, I have cultivated bee balm in my garden. Do you know if it has the same edible properties of the wild variety?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 6 лет назад
I don't know if they would work for poison ivy rash as far as getting rid of it. They will help to alleviate the burning sensation caused by it though. I normally use a mix of several different plants for poison ivy when people in my family get it so I've never used these plants for that. I don't know a lot about cultivated species, but I can say if the Bee Balm is Monarda fistulosa then it will work the same way as the Bee Balm in this video. Hope this helps a bit and thanks for asking JoJo!

@JoJoW the cultivated varieties of bee balm are great too. The red flowered version (didyma, I think it's called?) is often particularly sweet and makes a nice tea, very similar to Earl Grey. Here in Canada it's often called bergamot mint, after the bergamot orange which is the flavouring for Earl Grey tea. In my experience, medicinally, the bee balms/monardas are closer in action to their other mint-family cousin oregano than to the other "minty" mints like spearmint and peppermint. So anything you would use oregano oil for, you can use the monardas for. The only thing to watch for is that bee balm/monarda can pick up the smells and tastes of whatever it is close to, which means if your garden is close to the street it can take on the taste of asphalt!

Christine, thank you for all the information. Fortunately where I live in Massachusetts both our cottage and house abut miles of conservation land where I see all sorts of wild edibles and wild life that I never saw in the remote B.C. mountain range where I was raised. I didn't realize that Bee Balm flowers could be made into tea, looks like I have a lot of tasty experimenting ahead of me. Thanks for all your information and for the time you spent in sharing so much. Have a really wonderful day.

Josh, you got me so excited about monarda that I ended up writing a blog post about it, especially for those who grow it in their gardens. I embedded this video in there too (hope that's okay!). It's here: garblingthedandelion.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-many-moods-of-monarda-beebalm-or.html

Thank you so much Christine, anytime you want to embed a video of mine feel free. After reading the post, and others on your blog, I absolutely love it! The sense of humor, the knowledge meshes well and provides a good read. Would you mind if I start sharing your website with my subscribers? I'll put it in the description of my videos if that's okay with you. I think many of my viewers will appreciate it and learn a lot from it. I have several subscribers who are in Canada and I think they would get a lot of use from your site. Thank you again, it's always nice to read your comments!
