This clip is from our Parent Educator Program Meet-Ups, where we discussed helping a parent through a chore challenge. There are TWO things to remember when discussing chores (like this example of putting away the laundry).
🔎 But first - It’s important to approach conversations with patience and understanding. Older kids (tweens & teens) especially are at a stage in their development where they are trying to establish their independence and autonomy, so they may resist the idea of having to do chores, OR they may be overwhelmed by their responsibilities and need help with organizing tasks.
It’s important to listen to their perspective and try to understand their point of view. But it’s also necessary to dig deep into our own resistance to their choices. We can make the conversation more positive and empowering by recognizing 2 things:
1. How we feel about what’s happening.
2. What’s getting in our kid’s way.
If we can communicate our expectations clearly, without blame, shame, judgment, or guilt - we can establish a chore routine that works for everyone.
