Ingrid Clayton, Ph.D. is the author of Believing Me: Healing From Narcissistic Abuse and Complex Trauma. *Get it here: amzn.to/4aEpOcW or www.ingridclayton.com
She joins us for a conversation about narcissistic abuse and how "she came to face the feelings she had minimized for so long. By reclaiming her story, Ingrid transcended the role of healer into someone becoming healed, showing us what real healing looks like in the process."
If you're thinking, "But I wasn't traumatized," - but you still find yourself lashing out at your children or unable to regulate your anger or handle their emotions - this episode will have you looking at your past through a new lens.
From the book:
I didn’t have bruises.
She never left him.
He didn’t actually rape me.
Maybe I wasn’t worth believing.
Maybe it wasn’t that bad.
What if emotional abuse is so hidden, its effects remain unchallenged for decades, masquerading as personal failings?
Believing Me is an emotionally gripping memoir that gives language to the hidden and ineffable nature of childhood trauma and how it can imprint on a person, resulting in fractured self-esteem, addictions, perfectionism and a string of abusive relationships.

Welcome! I'm Lori, and I founded Teach Through Love because I'm passionate about helping adults resolve daily conflicts and nurture children's development by using conscious communication.
Parents, teachers, and caregivers are the most influential people in a child's life. My Conscious Parenting Courses and Communication Cards have helped thousands of parents and professionals break free of reactive patterns and unconscious beliefs about "discipline" that keep them stuck in negative cycles with kids.
I want to help adults increase cooperation and connection by communicating in ways that help kids feel heard and capable of change. We can help them reach their full potential and learn to solve conflicts and collaborate with others when we shift how we respond to their needs and feelings.

Thank you both so much for this. What advice do you have for single parents who don’t have the option to Tap Out?

@ChrissyLynn thank you so much for watching! It's definitely more difficult without support. I would say it's okay to walk away and take care of yourself as long as your child is safe. We can say, "I feel overwhelmed, I'm going to take a minute and be right back." - instead of staying and trying to help while dysregulated. And when you can't avoid it or have no help (it's OKAY!) - repair, repair, repair :)
