Hey man very useful info this is ! You made me actually crawl underneath my Red Convertible 1987 Camaro IROC-Z28 305 TPI V8 with 5 Speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox/drive-train to find out I have the smaller disks indeed, as you have declared. As far as I know the rear disks were only available on the IROC-Z28's 305 TPI V8 (220 HP) since these were equipped with this entire Borg-Warner Non-World-Class 5 Speed manual transmission in combination with the rest of the Australian Borg-Warner drive train. This was the homolegation package for Chevrolet they had to sell in certain numbers to be able to participate in the International Races Of Champions (IROC) with their IROC Race Camaro's. So, it seems to me (I could be wrong of course) that you'll not find these Rear disk-brakes (Neither of both options obviously) on any other 3Rd Gen Camaro, but only on the IROC-Z28 with the entire Borg-Warner manual-gearbox-drivetrain option.

I simply went with a 97 Fire-bird posi, disc brake, and 3:42 gears, works great!

did you do anything to modify the offset to match the fender?

I have one of these in my car. And you can’t find parts for them anywhere…. I found it a salvage and had to rebuild the calipers because nobody had them…. I found one caliper on eBay but the seller warned me it had been sitting on the shelf for years 😳 so I didn’t buy.. recently my posi doesn’t work all the time so I start talking to buddies and they said something about they have cone’s in the posi instead of something else but they hard extremely hard to find… I’m like great🤷🏾‍♂️ hopefully I can add some posi fluid and it start back work as normal 🤦🏾‍♂️ but as rare as these these things are there also a headache.. but I will say they are strong I’ve thrown 400 ftlbs at it for a few years now and it hasn’t broken. The tag said it’s rated at 200 so

I got my calipers off ebay. They were rebuilt ones I'm pretty sure, since they were painted black. But they work great.

Got my G92 code rear axle from a parted '92 into my '91 conv. and got master as well. Luckily it's low mile and well kept but replaced rotors, pads anyways. Also added reinforced cover since swapping out 305 for 383 I'm building for it. I figured these Aussie calipers the same as gen4 since they look the same, but mine are fine so far - thanks for the heads up.

Hey man, how's that project coming along? Just wanted to say that ThirdgenRanch has used parts if you need them, and Hawks Motorsport has alot of reproduction-parts if you need them.

Yeah, I'm also asking since from what I read it should be worth restoring, and there's plenty out there you can gather to do improvements or as original as you want. My first brand new car was a blue '91 special order 1LE /G92 coupe. No A/C, no radio, only perk was grey leather seats. Ex wife kept it. I now have another '91, this time an RS conv. that I put a G92 rear with all Hochkis, and am building a 383 now. Hope yours is getting fixed up too!

Great video! 89 was the only year that they made two rear ends - correct. I wanted to add the IROC rear axle with the aluminum callipers have a 32 spline axle, the other a 28 spline axle. It’s handy info for those looking to swap out for taller gears - ask me how I know lol

Hey awesome video! I actually swapped an 85' 9bolt axle from a firebird into my 82' z28. Finding those calipers in Canada was impossible and I ended up having having the calipers rebuilt. I have a 3.70 gear from Nitro Gears I was able to find and it was over $350USD gears for these are expensive! You may want to buy the 4th gen brake booster and master cylinder and get the willwood proportioning valve for your car since the master cylinder for disc vs drum cars is calibrated differently, you also get a higher sitting more late model braking feel.
@beardedreviews
@beardedreviews Год назад
Yea that's one thing I forgot to mention in the video was the proportioning valve and booster. I'll have to do some digging into which one is best for my application

Okay so for my 92 RS. I bought the 88 z28 rear brakes calipers and rotors new from orilley they were fairly expensive I bought a bracket from a company I can’t remember it all bolted right up to my stock rear end with 323 gears I put a mini spool in it for possi willwood proportioning valve new ls1 master cylinder I kept the stock original brake booster. I ran all new brake lines front and rear and I put a drift brake in and plumbed it straight in to the rear lines

So as I'm watching this I was hoping you would bring up swapping the better calipers and rotors, about 5 years ago I found an almost new low mile 9 bolt disc rear with 3.27 gears from a 88 T/A. I have 1984 Camaro L69, my car had the 3.73 drum rear. I never really liked how it was on the highway, I wanted to change it more for that reason versus having better stopping power but I also knew that was part of the package. Anyway, it's all been well worth it especially on the highway. It used to Rev pretty high, now not so much..Next, I'm gonna check into other parts. Thanks

That's my 2 cents I beat the crap out of the in high-school.. It never ever let the clutch disc broke constantly The rear end was tough Stage 2 ads chip and intake

Yes! Finally. I was looking for this info. I am also looking to swap the rear end. The drum brakes look horrible through the wheels and the braking power sucks. I also wanted to look for a rear disc off a 3rd gen iroc and this Info is very helpful. Is there going to be a follow up vid regarding the brake booster/proportioning valve since you’re converting the rear to disc brakes?

My factory 9 bolt locked up on the 401 on my dad 20 years ago 9 bolt posi it leaked the oil out of the rubber fill plug 3.45 t5 and we got a automatic rear end 3 21 t5 10% slower And the car was mine 4 years ago and It almost happened again we have a used rear axel and I couldn't get a rubber seal anywhere And I got it from 9 bolt com 20 bucks and saved the rear end Thank God I saw it leaking Just watch it non stop It broke the rear axel and wrecked my t5 5th gear shaved the gear clean off from it looking in 5th gear going 120kmh and almost caused a accident . Get a new seal and change the fluid with synthetic oil and lsd oil

i know im late. but 10bolt & 9bolt F-Body axle doesn't have the same tube diameter but you can use the 10bolt 4th gen 93-97 Bracket and caliper for the 3rd gen. btw im not a fan of 9bolt because the posi wear and will stop working and good luck finding parts for it. at least 10bolt parts are everywhere. 👍

Way late to the party 89 is only year for the pbrs on a 9bolt and last yr for 9bolt. (Very few documented installed on 90 cars) In 89, there's a 1st design 2 piece caliper bracket with dust shield (not in vid) Then the 2nd design caliper bracket like yours in vid. (Anti-moan tsb and thicker bracket like yours was 2nd design)
@raulcarrillo2226
@raulcarrillo2226 Месяц назад
This doesn't sound right. Thought the 9 bolt PBR caliper set up went up to 1992? If not, what brake set up did GM use then? Because they were still using Borg Warner units up to that year and my 91 GTA has the 3.23 BW 9 bolt unit but is equipped with drums, unfortunately. I want to replace it with a disc unit and I'm talking with someone who is parting a 92 trans am that has this. But if it's not a PBR set up then I may not want it. What I'm seeing in this video is the '85-'88 disc set up vs the '89 and up unit. (1st design vs 2nd design) The 85-88 has the iron calipers, 10" rotors, and the ebrake system is being utilized with externally mounted counterweights on the calipers. This is problematic because they have a tendency to freeze up and not unlock correctly when released. Therefore GM did several revisions. Obviously the PBR aluminum caliper was a major upgrade along with the larger rotors. But also the revisions was done with the ebrake release which was redesigned. You can clearly see it in this video. I use to have a '89 T-Top GTA 350 that was built on 1/89 and it was a 9 bolt 3.27 BW unit with PBR brakes. I've always liked the 9 bolt rear end on my car because doing rear brakes was easy. You don't need a special tool to crank the piston into it's bore other then using a normal C-clamp.
@TTOP350
@TTOP350 Месяц назад
89 was last yr gm used the 9bolt. In 89, there was a 1st design and 2nd design caliper bracket. In late 91, the calipers received a vibration dampener. In 93, there were several other changes, mount bracket, caliper w/shaved fins, vibration bracket an dampener changed shape and locations A 3.23 rearend in a 91 is a 10bolt. The simple pbr rear disc setup from 89-97. Went larger, heavier and more complex 98-02. I don't know much about the 82-88 iron rear disc other than they are garbage. Tossed every set into scrap pile.
