I’ve been swimming for years but in a fairly self-taught way, but now I’m making amends so I’m binging on these videos. Anyway, I’m doing better but sometimes I’m not sure if I’m keeping my elbows up or not. I do both drills you recommend and I’d say the hand paddles help me the most with EVF. I’m looking forward to your next video because I need to improve my breathing, and I always run out of breath. I think some things only come with time, but I’d love to get some pointers. Thanks!

Mam which glasses I will purchase because I learn swimming in India without glasses if it's possible send me link of that please I followed you for last 2 months tysm for ur efforts and it's my one of the dream now in my dream list to meet you and train under you for the compititions because here there is less or I guess no opportunity in swimming I said about my area where I am living. I like your videos because they're concise and well presented. "In theory" I know all of these things but it's always good to see the different drills that different coaches use to implement them. I also like that you focus on technique and the basics. There are so many videos out there aimed at competitive swimmers who want to shave milliseconds off their PB and seem to have all the (pool) time in the world to follow an ultra optimised training schedule. I'm in my late 40s, I swim with a social club and I just want to keep doing it - largely injury free - till I drop dead, haha. A good technique is essential for that so thank you.

One question: I have smaller, ergonomic paddles - what's the advantage of using larger ones and grabbing them without slipping them on, the way you do?

Hi there! Grabbing the paddles helps with your early vertical forearm (EVF). When you glad the top of the paddle it forces your wrist to stay in line with your arm so you can get a better feel for that high elbow catch and pull!

Hi. What a great instructional video. I hope you read this question: I own a snorkel, but i was told to not use it. Can you please share in what instances it makes to use it in training? Thank you so much.

I’m not a pro or a coach or anything but I assume breathing with a snorkel allows the swimmer to eliminate the focus of breathing during a stroke. There’s probably a different, better reason tho

Can’t imagine that a continuous music background of any kind in a classroom or a lecture hall would help drive the message home. Just because it’s technically possible doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

People are exagerating a bit, english is not even my first language and i didnt have a problem listening to taylor at all, its true that it could be just a little less distracting but a the same time it gives a dinamic and fun feeling to the lesson, if anything, maybe turn it down a bit, but its not a big deal IMHO

I’m new to swimming, I have been learning on my own for the passed two months. I find the high elbow catch actually less comfortable and weaker, surely I am not doing it right😄

It takes some time to learn and that's ok! Try these drills out next time you're at the pool. They will definitely help :)

Try slowing it down. A slow high elbow catch will beat a fast straight arm. Try and feel the water and push it back. Sometimes people try to pull too early as well. Focus on getting the catch, even timing it to just increase your naturally falling arm. But alternatively you can change things up a bit. I've recently increased my roll and reach, when I was always trying to limit it. Surprisingly it's decreased my drag and helped my arm stay higher and a better high elbow catch. It's just practice, time in the water. Get someone to film. Join a swimming crew. Just some ideas, but enjoy :)

I am sorry but either am I misunderstanding something but I dont see your elbows being high during the pull phase. It seems like your are catching the water but then you drop your elbow, when pulling.

Your comment, at the start of this video, about the straight arm pull not being the most powerful is not correct. Straight arm pull and recover is used by all of the men 50 meter sprinters. Most of the women do not do it. This is a power move which gives you a faster stroke rate, and for a flat out sprint, this straight arm pull/straight arm recover/kayak/windmill stroke is best. It is not some thing that can be done by anyone for much more than 50 meters, and pretty much all swimmers will use it for the last 10 or so meters of their races for the winning 'kick'. You do need to train for it, and if you try it without training for it, you will have shoulder problems.

Hi there! When we said the straight arm pull is not as powerful, we meant the portion that is under the water. The straight arm recovery (over the water) is what sprinters use and that is proven to be more powerful. However, they pull with the early vertical forearm under the water for maximum pull. Hope this makes sense :)

@@myswimpro For any distance over 50 meters, yes, for the 50 meter men's sprint, straight arm pull, straight arm recover. The women do not swim this way because they don't have the muscle or power to maintain it for any more than the last few meters of a race. The longer lever of the straight arm is more powerful than the shorter lever of the EVF. Physics 101. Yes, it takes a lot of power to do this.
