I finally take my Triumph Speedmaster for its 20,000 mile service. I ride to my local official Triumph dealership to get the work done, and borrow a courtesy bike for the day.
I was expecting it to be an expensive service, however maybe not this much! Find out how much I paid to have my bike serviced after 20 thousand miles in just over one year. Be aware of the costs of motorcycling and be sure to budget them in.

I got charged £1300 for a service on a 2016 Street Twin with 6500 miles on the clock.New headset bearings and new chain and sprocket.£750 for labour.I felt like Triumph really ripped me off.Go to an independent garage that specialises in Triumphs and not to a dealer who will rip you off for labour costs

Wow Rachel! That's dreadful. I have a new Speedmaster and have had problems too (same Bonneville platform). I needed new chain & sprockets and valve clearances & shims after only 5000 miles. Sickener. I got the valves & shims on warranty, but still... I have found that not all Triumph dealers are good (unlike Harley, who seem to be much better). Cheers, Chris

That is very expensive. Yes Often best to go to independent dealer, just make sure they can give you the official Triumph service stamp in your log book!

Motorcycle servicing at a main dealer is ridiculously costly now and triumphs seem to be one of the more expensive brands to service - things like changing the air filter are unnecessarily difficult to access and you quite often need to change the whole air filter assembly rather than just the filter. £1000 for a service !! You could buy a motorcycle for that .
@ianfutcher1518
@ianfutcher1518 Год назад
@@birchwoodbiker so has everyone’s costs but their prices are disproportionate. There is going to be a lot of bikes without service history coming up for sale in the next few years. Motorcycle sales will also drop as a result of these ridiculous service costs.

Franky, outrageous! You were thoroughly ripped off, my son. More than my Ducati desmo service and even my Mercedes service. You are young, and hopefully, a lesson learned. Fowlers should be ashamed. Unless it's still under warranty, that motorcycle is not difficult at all to service, check valve clearances, etc. There are ample servicing videos and general web pages to help.

I'm so glad I'm a mechanic, £980 that's half what I paid for my Triumph, I bought a T100 cat n Write off, less than 10k on it, I've done a full service on it, new parts to repair it including brake pads, oil filter, rocker cover gasket and shims still came in cheap. Bike parts arnt cheap but main dealer labour rates kill it. I've worked for prestige car dealers and labour was over £100 an hour plus the dreaded vat. In this day wouldn't it be nice if the government abolished VAT to help us all out.

Years ago I rode the 1050 Tiger and thoroughly enjoyed the bike and its smooth power. All of the moto-mags seem to love the T-plane crank but like you, I don’t. I test rode a Tiger 850 while looking for my next bike and the vibration through the bars totally turned me off. I also test rode a T-120 and a Speedmaster that day and rode home on the Speedmaster to replace my Thunderbird 1600. I loved my T-Bird. Sixty thousand miles and zero problems but a wonky right knee made me realize it was time for me and my bike to lose a few pounds. Three weeks and I like it more each time I ride. Once again, thank you for bringing to light and supporting men’s mental health.

Morning RedAng - that's not so helpful for mental health! Crickey. Glad you don't seem unduly upset by it. I was interested by the ECU remap: my understanding is that new Bonnevilles can't have a re-tune 'cos of Triumph software protection. Shame. I too have to nudge the throttle a little on take-off which, compared to my old Sportster, is a bit tedious. (Plus I forget from time to time so stall it, most embarrassingly.) I'm looking forward the ECU remap video. (ECM in Harley speak - that's just what I'm used to!). Cheers, Chris

I have got to get my Harley it’s 20k service which is a big one (oils ,fork oil and head bearing greased etc.) and am expecting a similar sized bill with labour costing £150 an hour. Yours was inflated by new brake pads which can easily be another £100 if all of them need changing these you could have done yourself and saved a bit pretty easily. The thing is not everybody is capable of doing valve adjustments (shims under buckets no thanks) and if you are getting good service sometimes paying for it is the best way to go.

So the lesson here is look at the money you can save over the years when you learn to service it yourself. It might turn out to be the cost of the bike itself given enough time. I've been riding drive shaft bikes for nearly 40 years but have had my share of chain drive also, especially because of dirt biking. I found a company that made stainless steel sprockets that advertised that it would likely be the last sprocket you would ever buy. It had to be laser cut out of some very hard material. They were right. I could not wear it out. I wonder if anyone makes stainless steel chain? I remember wearing out chain, running them until the rollers fell off, and I ran a front sprocket until the teeth were so far gone it began jumping on the chain. The teeth were not pointed at all, but rather looked like gentle waves. Chain drive is very dependable. Lots to be said for chain drive actually. I found some chain lube that was also awesome, so much so that I was accused by several people I rode with because in the middle of a desert poker run my chain was the only one that was still black and looked wet. They thought I was lubing the chain, and I was not. I forgot what that brand was but it was awesome, and it never flung, just as they said. If I had a chain now, I might try some tungsten disulfide powder mixed in a spray bottle of alcohol, or just go with plain old heavy grease and wipe off all excess, just to keep the chain from rusting, and then just run it 'till the rollers fall off, but then you better have some real tough sprockets or just replace everything as set as recommended. I did really like the shaft drive. (Old BMW K) but then you did have to take the entire rear of the bike apart all the way to the clutch to lube the splines once in a while. Learn to do everything yourself is my advice, and do actually do it. Jack up the front of the bike to check the steering head bearings. They like to wear a notch in the race from all the potholes while riding straight ahead. If you move the wheel side to side, there should be no notchy feel. If there is, replace them. Do Not tighten them if they feel notchy, but you do need some bearing preload. I don't believe the front wheel should bang over to it's stops by itself, but there should be slight resistance felt. Check your manufacturer on this, but most people could do most all of the maintenance yourself, and you do have to keep maintenance. It's all a part of the ride.

I know it’s an old upload but Hopefully you’ll see it. I have question regarding touring and the Speedmaster. As I am a Speed Twim 1200 owner I know My bike isn’t suitable for other than shorter journeys with a pillion rider and luggage because of hard to set preload and well… tiz a sportier bike mainly for the one rider… so how does the Speedmaster handle journeys? Would it handle let’s say… 2000 miles without being a pain for a pillion rider But… yes a Tiger 1200 is in my radar for those longer trips.

I bought a new Rocket from Fowlers and use them for the items that I cannot do myself like 20000 mile valve clearance check which I had done this time last year. Cost all in with a set of new plugs as they had to remove them as part of it plus cam cover seals and the dreaded vat was £260.00 so not to bad in the grand scheme of things. Going in again soon for brake fluid change again this has to be carried out by the dealership as the bike has ABS they quoted £90.00 as this is a std charge for this job which again not to bad. But it comes down to what a person can or cannot do themselves as the labour rate I worked it out last year was £100.00 Hr from another Triumph dealership quote. Changing oil and filter is not rocket science along with brake pads, coolant and giving the bike the once over.

Ouch, £985!!! Well at least you got the correct map for Speedie with the V&H pipes plus all the service items done. For the valve check count yourself lucky that you don't have a 4 or 6 cylinder bike or a Ducati! You need to do another video of how smoothly your Speedmaster is running now, purring along. Sure would be interested in a Tiger 1200 or better still a 900 GT Pro with a triple engine WITHOUT the T plain crank nonsense!!! I want to change my Sprint ST1050 and test rode the 900 GT Pro but just hated the T plain crank triple engine that Triumph has put in it. Why, oh why???!!! Triumph have lost their way big time especially after the lemon that is the Speed Triple 1200RR. Don't change what is working well. Angus, I thought you lived in London? Did you leave the big smoke? Trouble with Scotland is that it is either cold wet and miserable or slightly less cold wet and miserable. And then there are the midges. How about a quick tour around France? Take a ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg or St Malo then ride around for about a week or however long you have planned. Head back up to St Malo, Cherbourg or other port on the northern French coast and back to Portsmouth. Portsmouth is a lot nearer then Scotland to Bath. The thought of a 400-500 miles ride up to Scotland on mostly boring and congested UK motorways to get to the start of the North Coast 500 puts me right off. How about riding the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland or part of it? Riding through central and N. Wales to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Dun Laoghaire isn't too bad, quite scenic really if you choose a good route. But Ireland can be wet. Not known as the Emerald Isle for nothing. The west coast is stunning.

@@redangrevival I know what you mean regarding resale, but independents use stamps and most people would be happy with that I would have thought, but some people are finicky 🙂, especially those with no mechanical knowledge I guess 😄, I’ve got a few bikes and once the manufacturers warranty is out I do the work myself, keeping receipts for the oil/parts, Also I use top quality oil, the dealers no doubt use cheaper oils, I was really put off dealer work when I took my brand new Ducati scrambler back to the dealer because it had been delivered with a broken mirror tilt mechanism , their “mechanic” broke 2 replacements in-front of me, I then took the 3rd one from him and fitted it myself without a problem, he was approx 18 and clearly hadn’t a clue. , I took my Thruxton 1200 to the dealer for the basic yearly service cos I knew there was a new map just released and a recall on the sidestand , so with the winter service discount it was the most economical way of getting the map etc , I slackened the front calliper bolts, the chain guard bolts and left the chain just over max slack, all within safe limits for the ride there but under minimum, when I got home I torque checked everything and surprise surprise nothing had been touched, I called the service manager, he apologised and refunded me 50%, so I got the map upload and oil change for £60, seriously they are a bunch of clowns in my experience 😂
