Back when the fa cup meant the world. Brings back so many memories, none more so than how outstanding John Barnes was. Still my favourite player to this day.
I'm neither a Everton or Liverpool fan,but this was a tremendous game of football and achieved in a F.A Cup final,(which usually are close games).Competitive, skillful, dramatic and plenty more! But of course we have "The modern game"..Give me a f##king break".
I`m a lifelong Forest fan but I`m glad Liverpool beat us in that semi-final to set up this final for a Merseyside still so raw from the horrors of Hillsborough.(I can still remember watching it all unfold and feeling guilty for being relieved that it was happening at the Liverpool end.Harsh I know, but I had family in the Forest end.) JFT96
I was in the Leppings Lane end, you should feel no guilt, you did not put us there, the authorities did, despite warnings from the previous year. It could just as easily have been you . Thank you for your support, JFT96.
You're right about the feeling of guilt. I was on Leppings Lane directly behind the goal and my dad asked if we could move. I didn't want to move and we argued about it. But it was packed and I gave in. We exited via the tunnel and went to one of the side pens. Had that decision not been made, there would've been two extra people in the crush that day.
Great final when the fa cup meant something used to love cup final day as a kid the build up the match then getting your mates out to recreate the goals from the game
Words carnt fulfill the loss of the 96 ..its a day that so so so many were awaiting for with a greatness of footballing skill and previous encounters so sad no words just speechless on what happened
Can’t beat the older cup finals for commentary ! It sticks in the mind more ! Probably because there weren’t as many game in play distractions ! Football fan first and MUFC fan second ! ⚽️🇮🇪
Watching the '88 and '89 finals, the '89 final feels like it wouldn't be out of place in today's game. The '88 final however feels like what it is: From another era.
As an Aston Villa fan this is one of the best finals I've ever watched. Villa Park hosted the Everton vs Norwich semi final at the same time as the awful events at Hillsborough were unfolding, so it's only fitting the final was contested by the two teams from that city. Both clubs were a credit to the game that day.
@Hannibal Barca You brat,if they can't win Steaua in a final inside Spain without even score a goal in the penalties shoot out then they were pissed on by Steaua who went also in another final during this time.Barcelona was an absolute mediocre team and not in the top teams of that era you like it or not.Have a nice day.
No they weren't Barcelona were never a big team back then so maybe you meant Barcelona were like the lpool if old because Liverpool did it way before barca could only dream of doing.
Good day. Thank you so much for the posting match. Enjoyed of course. Bravo. Clicked the like button with pleasure. Lots of love and greetings from your subscriber. County Azerbaijan, Baku city👍🙏🙏🙏
First FA cup final i remember, sat in our seaside caravan with my older brother an Everton fan and me a budding Liverpool fan only changed dramatically by Michael Thomas in the game against Arsenal after this game....
@@Fidzpo sorry to say,F.H. this was 31 year's ago, when all Merseyside were 'one or the other',have a joke, skit a rival player, have a laugh, but as Liverpool were winning more, and Everton were winning nothing,Their fan's became so bitter, some even 'calling after' that 'fateful day at Hillsborough! [still Scouser's' most who died!] They just got nastier and cowardly as the year's went on,and still,to this day, Everton fan's are scum,' Blue and white Shite', as the song goes! and Maybe They'll have a similar tragedy one day,When All Everton scumbag's will perish, who know's?
When finals were finals. The build up started from about 11:30/12 on Grandstsnd, they used to go the team hotels, follow the coaches to the stadium, interview players on the pitch.. they had everything. Now it’s all adverts in the half hour pre-match. Absolute joke.
I came here and watched this again after getting a notification of someone "plus oneing" my other comment and at the risk of getting all romantic about the beautiful game it really is as if the 96 said "Nah, 1-0 to Liverpool, that's not good enough, this needs to be a classic cup final, let's have a scrambled equaliser in the last seconds to set it up!" God, I remember Grobbelaar going ballistic with one of his defenders when Liverpool seemed on the ropes (I think it was at 2-2) and thinking "Everton have got them here!". Almost like it was scripted though in the end, Beautiful! :)
Iwas at this match 3 . 2 to Liverpool f.c what a game that was it was a special match to me I hitch it to Wembley in the second hard I got in for nothing a log with other Liverpool f.c fans the first five hundred gotin for nout what a day I had and John barns was really nice to me after the match livrrpool 3 v Everton 2 il never for get that day in 1989 fa.Cup final yours Alan Johnson aka Ziggy NESTA MARLEY FROM LUTTERWORTH IN LEICESTERSHIRE IN ENGLAND
Hey, I was there too! Long time ago, but something I'll never forget. I remember getting my ticket for the semi at Hillsborough and thinking if we won I'd miss out on the final. Luck or fate, I went to both. Emotional.
@@Prodigy_Fan The Everton scum tried to get the final abandoned after Ian Rush got his 2nd goal,That's not passion, that was just 'They could'nt stand the Losing another Cup Final against The Mighty Reds, Dirty Shit house Blues!
Everton fan and on the day was gutted we lost, with the benefit of hindsight it was only right that Liverpool won it that year. At the time Hillsborough was too raw to take in after weeks of funerals on Merseyside. Classic final though - I can almost appreciate Rush’s deft finishes now, at the time I dreaded the sight of him!
It really was the main cup to win as europe was a no go for english clubs. This final was nerve racking as an LFC fan then we go lose to the Gunners on another last minute goal !!
What a season to say the least....the horrors of Hillsboro, that semi-final replay beating Forest, the crazy 1st half of the season when we were many points behind Arsenal, and then a superb winning run to go into the last game needing just a 0:1 loss or draw to win the DOUBLE.... but alas...it wasn't to be.... King Kenny's Liverpool team were magnificient. Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Houghton, Rush, McMahon, Nicol, etc....what a brilliant team. Only bettered now by Klopp's European champions and soon to be League Champions.
Good news 4 you Liverpool deserve the premier league i am an Arsenal fan there rubbish now but it do sent matter . Are you a Born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ by believing he died for all your sins was buried and rose again on the 3rd day, I just saw your thumbnail why i am asking . Plus will there be a restart with the corona virus going on
Ratcliffe said Everton's demise was down to not replacing the quality in midfield, but McCall was outstanding and Ratcliffe was dreadful and way past it.
@@thewatchman9540 Peter Reid was superb in spells and played injured the rest of the time (as seen in 🇲🇽 86) Mccall did what Reid and Bracewell never did and scored x2 goals in a cup final. Kendall and Harvey kept their faith in players that should've been sold on and they should've built a new midfield with Mccall. Not replacing our mid 80s successful players with quality sooner was the mistake. Ratcliffe should've been binned years b4 89.
@@thewatchman9540 Exactly. He wasn't playing with the same quality of players. I've think you've lost sight of my original point, but also reinforced it! Ratcliffe and the doddering others from previous successful seasons were the issue, not Mccall being incapable of matching Reid and Bracewell's intermittent past success! And it's worth adding that Bracewell was poor in this game. In fact, once Whitehurst had smashed Bracewell he never returned to his best (Keegan period aside) and wasn't good enough for a side that should've aimed for leagues titles again.
no,sorry, it was'nt, R.P. Everton fan's did'nt give a shite about those Liverpool fan's death's, truth! they've even sang about the 'Hillsborough tragedy on 'Derby day's, sick shit house's! Everton have alway's been bitter and twisted of the Reds success, cos they've always been in the bottom half of the League and won Nothing, '''Blue and white Shite,'' as the 'song goes, pal,
"Oh, John Aldridge in a great position here and Liverpool have scored in their first attack" = 'G'wan 'Mottie'.. let alone "Rush GOAL" (x2) eh you legend.
Fences put up to stop pitch invasions were taken down in memory of Hillsboro that yr an same fans then run onto the pitch. Bit classless for those that done that
Firstly, the fans running onto the pitch spoiled the end of this cup final. There was no lap of honour as a consequence. Secondly, I was behind the 'right' goal that day and the win felt hollow. It can only be described as 'we won the cup, but 95 people are still dead'. Gave up my season-ticket at the end of this season.
Can someone please tell me who "Steve McCall" plays for! Motford said it twice too!! Stuart McCall's biggest game for years, he scores and then that tosser motty screws his name up on terrestrial TV
