I find that buce and anubias do much much better in shrimp tanks with very little nutrients. The shrimp also keep the plants clean of algae. No more than about 10 to 12 hours of light each day is needed. Floating plants also help to keep the nutrients low and fight off the algae.
It's been ages since i watched some of your content. A lot of the OT fishtubers have disappeared, left the hobby or sadly, passed on. Good to see you're tanks are still bubbling and plants still growing! I really should go through my fave channels, delete a few and update my notifications🙂
Not sure if you know, but you have to turn it off at night. Once I figured that out, I get way more c02 out of the fluval bio co2 as it builds up at night while it is closed. I have the same glass tester and it stays a faint blue green no matter how high I turn it or my circulation.
Homemade CO2 just wont give enough steady fermentation to give you high pressure for a lot of BPM. You'd have to close the valve at night to build pressure then open for a small burst in BPM which will level back off. But if that tank doesnt have a pressure valve its best not to do this because if you forget you're just brewing a big pipe bomb that will make a huge mess when it pops open.
Yes, thanks for the update on the co2 system! I'm just stepping into it. I don't want to go all aquascaping over it but I would enjoy seeing plants that are actually growing, in mu stubborn tanks. I am trying out the fluval co2 20 bell diffusion kit and still waiting to see results; some improvement but not quite there; fun though. So just got the Fzone citric acid/baking soda co2 system kit. One thing is that it does have a solenoid. Seems like the Fluval system you have is in the same ballpark as the Fzone . I hope it works for you and without any hassles as you move along with it over time. Guess nothing's perfect. Enjoy your videos!
For the hobbyist who tears down their tank every 2-3 years or so - would plenums be better suited to tanks you would want to keep for much longer period?
Well, it wasn’t any harder to take apart. I like the Plenum mostly for the way they pull all the material from the water into the substrate. It really seems to make it clear inside. But I think a 20 gallon is a little shallow if you’re gonna try to plant in it also.
It seems to me the recommendations of both Dr. Novak and Father Fish for substrates supporting planted aquariums require a 4 inch base- I'm unsure if I have a preference for either vs all gravel. *I like your attitude that experimenting can be part of enjoying the hobby!!*
@@pecktec I have two 20 long aquariums setup with a Plenum and about two inches or so of substrate over them. I did have trouble with both of them for a while but then I started doing a lot less water changes and added more fertilizer and the plants are doing so much better now. I have both tanks packed with mostly Anubia nana and Anubias nana petite with some crepts and floating plants.
