When I buy ground beef, the packages are always around 2 1/3 pounds. Instead of dividing the packages in two, I divide it in three portions that are around 3/4 pounds each. It works out fine for meals calling for a pound of ground beef. No one notices if there’s a bit less meat in the recipes.

Here in the UK we call it a shopping trolley 😃 Before going food shopping, my tip is to rediscover the joy and contentment of serving our families instead of impetuously buying things for our own immediate gratification. It is a wonderful feeling to know that we can develop the consideration and self-discipline of generations before us. How astounded they would be to see how people today get into debt or waste hard earned money because of the ‘I Want It, and I want it Now!’ attitude of today.

My #1 tip is to cooperate with others. I live alone, I have friends who live alone, and we often share homecooked meals and chores. When I was working, my friends would go and pick up my share at the food bank. Later we would meet, share the spoils and I would cook from it for all of us. So much fun, so much cheaper than a restaurant, and cooking together with others saves a lot of energy. it helped us through some really hard times. My #2 tip is to consider your energy bill while cooking. Don´t overcook food, always use a lid, use a suitable pot and turn of the heat early. Soak beans, peas and lentils the night before cooking them. That is not only healthier, but will also reduce cooking time very much. Saves energy and time.

An FYI - sometimes the "preseasoned" meat is actually meat that is a bit older or discolored and the seasoning is used to hide off odors or an item that has "oxidized". The meat could be "older" than "fresh". LOVE your channel - it's always my first choice 😍

The food I make at home tastes better than the restaurants of today. It's fresher, leaner and I know what goes into the pot. At first we didn't enjoy the taste but now we don't like the taste of fast food and would never spend what they charge in a sit down restaurant.

I do the above comment but also take a black magic marker and circle the best price on all the flyers. But if I go to the store and see something that was not listed in their ad that's a better deal, I change my meal plan. I also know what stores sell items cheaper. For instance, I can buy 1 pound of bacon at my fruit market for 12 ounces of bacon on sale at the grocery store.

Our #1 tip is that we bought a chest freezer, and we fill it with seasonal bargains - vacuum sealed bags of blueberries, strawberries, and avocados; home-grown green beans, crushed tomatoes and home-made pesto; individual servings of homemade soups; and finally, big-batch dinners divided into dinners for two. Whenever I don’t feel like cooking, it’s ’to the Big Cube’ we go! I also downloaded the Too Ggod to Go app - and our nearby Panera is offering a great deal on a big bag of baked goods - so, thanks for that!

Yes, it is important to eat before you shop, but, also, it is important to eat before you make your meal plan. Your stomach will lie to you that you NEED something because you are hungry. I honestly have not done this too often myself yet, but as I am getting older, I am now asking my extended family or friends occasionally if they would like to split a grocery item that I know I cannot eat totally by myself….like a package of celery or onions, etc. I enjoy these items in my food, but I know other people don’t always want a whole package, either.

I sometimes do this with my daughters. If I buy something at Costco and it is in bulk and I know I'm not going to be able to eat all of it then I will often share it. Sometimes I freeze it for myself for later but sometimes I just want to give half of it to one of my kids. Those cakes and pies and cheesecakes and stuff like that and muffins are all delicious but they come in such large amounts that is not always feasible for one person. So I'd like to share the love.

My tip is make soup from the meat or chicken scraps you have left after a big meal. Simmer them in a pot of water with onion, garlic, spices etc. Strip the little pieces off the bone and add to the strained liquid. Add veggies and broth base flavoring and simmer in a crock pot. Add whatever else you'd like as your starch....pasta, rice, cut up potato etc. Serve with roll and salad or whisk it into a puree. You'll get twice as many tasty meals out of your meats and the variety of soups is endless.

Soup is fantastic for saving. Vegetables unlike fruits or salads are cheap. Cheapest cuts become delicious in soups, and unlike most foods they stay tasty after reheating. Making them perfect carryover / lunch at work. You also don’t need to be good cook to make killer soups.

One different one I could add is this: Before I push my buggy (yes, in Texas it's a buggy!) to the cashier, I pull over and evaluate whether or not I've put more in than I really need to. I almost always need to put some things back. My family is grown and I'm just feeding myself now, so I have a hard time not over-buying. I don't need nearly as much food as when I was feeding 6 people. Love your channel!

Emmie, we went to Shady Maple market/grocery yesterday. Found their reduced produce section. All the varieties were $1.99 a peck basket. Also they had strawberries for .99 a quart. Bought reduced oatmeal because the cardboard container was a little dented, and also a box of jiffy mix for the same reason. Afterwards, we headed over to the Shady Maple buffet. It was my husband's birthday and on your birthday they give you a complimentary meal. So we paid one senior meal for me, and his was free. Love Shady Maple. Emmy, I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half and I never get tired of them! I've mentioned before that I shop at bent and dent grocery stores where I live. They are owned by Amish, so no fresh foods, only boxed or canned. I can save 50-75 percent on cereal, coffee, tuna, peanut butter etc. My daughter and I will take a day to go to all the bent and dents and thrift stores in our area about every 4-6 weeks and stock up. Thank you for another wonderful video!! We do a lot of what you mentioned. It helps so much! We place our order online to the grocery store, then pick it up, which keeps us within budget because we see our online shopping cart update the price as we go. Buying seasonally is so important. My biggest tip has to be utilizing the freezer. We will buy large portions of meat on sale, then weigh and portion it out and freeze each portion. When a seasonal vegetable is on sale, we will buy what we can store and freeze what we can't eat immediately. I do this with herbs too, and anything grown in the garden. Butter freezes well, bread... the list is endless!

I would add learn to exercise an open mind about possibilities if you see a good deal. I had eggs on my list. At the store I noticed a manager’s special of $3.99 for 18 count. A section over were the same eggs ( brand and count) for $6.99. The difference? The special had a short date of March 24 and the more expensive eggs were dated best by March 30. I commented to another lady the $3.99 was a good deal and she said she couldn’t use them all by the 24th, chose the $6.99 eggs and left. I picked up the $3.99 deal. I am going to hard boil 6, I’m going to make banana bread and blueberry muffins ( using another 4), I’m going to make some scrambled eggs with 4 or 5 for my freezer breakfast burritos ( eggs, hash browns, cheese and chopped cooked bacon or ham). The remaining eggs I can make breakfast for dinner, choose to freeze, or make some cookie dough for the freezer, you get the idea. Eggs are an easy example but I’ve picked up meat ( freeze immediately), condiments, sauces. Usually items I know I will use, but I may buy one of something unusual to see if I’d like it. ( edit to add I realize everyone has different needs and since I bake I found uses for the eggs, while another shopper may not; I do not want to imply this shopper’s choice was wrong.) Another edit to add that I know eggs can be good past the sell date, I was just giving an example of how the eggs could be used quickly if one wanted to use them by the date.

I learned this trick during the pandemic. At the time, I was working full-time and was also part of the emergency response so working from home while also working with county residents who needed assistance (it was crazy!). I learned to make my list in the order of the store, going from the back of the store to the front. I would shop on Saturdays, and be in line when the store first opened. I would head to the back and shop only for the items on the list (I allowed myself grace so if I found something on sale I could pick it up). I would head to the checkout and be out of the store within 20-30 minutes of when I first walked in. I still do this!! An extra tip is to ask the meat department when the price of the meat gets reduced…in my case it was Friday so I found some good deals on meat when shopping on Saturdays. Final thought…I have always called them shopping carts (Midwest born & raised). My MIL calls them buggies (she is from England).

My tip is kind of opposite to your advice of having a list & sticking to it. I like to check out the marked down meats, clearance section THEN based on that I'll decide on the fly various dishes to make throughout the week. I'll stick to basics (oatmeal, eggs, etc.), but I'm a decent cook & can make pretty much anything from cheaper ingredients. Meal plan and food delivery. I live about 45 minutes from my nearest supermarket. I’ve actually found that it is more frugal to have a weekly food delivery than it is to go shopping myself. I plan what I need for the next week, order only what I need so I’m not tempted by all the unnecessary “offers” and whilst I am having to pay for them to pick and deliver, it saves me both time and fuel costs in doing it myself. 🇬🇧

My tip is what I saw a friend do many years ago. I go through my groceries as soon as I get them and I prep them. I cut the celery wash it pull off the leaves so its ready use. I open that block of cheese and slice or shred. Doing this keeps everything handy and it doesn't go bad from sitting in the fridge because I'm to tired to go through the whole process when its time to cook and I have no need to buy celery all cut up at higher prices because I know I will do it myself. I hope this makes sense.About the buggies.... I grew up calling a buggy a shopping cart so I was confused too when i first heard it but on the last video when you said you looked in the carriages of the Amish I literally pictured a wooden wagon 😂😂😂😂

I just started this... I bought a whole ham this month and after cooking it I'm going to slice it and freeze it in different portions to use in different ways such as sandwiches and salads and dinners... I figured that would help me save money. I am going to do the same with other cuts of meat. I think this will help me save money... I hope so.

Occasionally I buy cayenne pepper cheese for myself from the grab ‘n go section at the deli. Aprx 1/2 pound pkgs. The other day I actually payed attention to the price per pound! 😱 I almost fell out!! My girl’s are always asking for suggestions for gifts for me…. So I think I will suggest a package of the cayenne pepper cheese and a package of my favorite coffee. Splurges just for me as my husband doesn’t drink coffee and seldom eats the cheese.

I think calling it a buggy is cute. Here where I live we call them shopping carts. I think I have a lot of shopping tips. Many are the same as yours Emmy. But I think my top two shopping tips are: Shop alone if it's possible if it's not learn how to say no kindly. And my second one is to shop by unit price. Such as how much is the item per ounce. Stores are getting tricky about how they're labeling things. Two items two like items can be side by side and they'll have it marked as x amount of cents per ounce on one item and on the next item it'll be per pound. Or per piece such as a six pack of granola bars. So you have to do the math. I do it by ounce. Even if it takes a little longer to calculate because they've labeled it by pound. I just have a calculator and I divide it by the ounces and that's how I get the price per ounce. Great video and thank you I did download the two good to go app but in my area it isn't applicable. Or I don't think there's any stores or restaurants around here that are participating in it.

Thank you for another helpful video. Dixie looked so sweet, covering her face, at the end. My tip is that many stores have the little shopping scanners that you pick up at the beginning, and you scan and bag as you go through the aisles. Not only does this give you a running title so you know exactly what you're spending, but there are often discounts that are only available with this method of shopping.

Hello from the Deep South… as in 45 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico and yes… it is a “buggy” here lol. Two things: we transitioned to empty nesters about two years ago and so produce does spoil quickly for us.. so we made the switch to mainly frozen foods, but I’m still learning not to use the whole bag when I’m cooking 😂. Two, my tip is to make as few trips to the store as possible, and preferably have a set day you go. I dislike grocery shopping, especially if I have to go to a big box store, and will put it off as long as possible but end up making multiple trips to the more expensive local grocery store and spending more money. Also, here where I live we have discount grocery stores that will sell goods that the box might be slightly damaged or it’s close to expiration date at a fraction of the cost, so don’t be afraid to check them out although they do tend to carry more convenience items than staple ingredients. As always thank you for your videos. They have been so helpful to me!

The grocery stores in my area publish their weekly ad circulars on Tues pm so I check their website, make my list and clip digital coupons. Before I check out in the store, I make sure the discounted price is clipped to my account. I also double-check to be sure I chose the right brand, size and flavor that's on sale. I agree with another commenter, the “seasoned” meat is usually older meat they need to push to get rid of. My husband use to buy cards from the grocery- when I told him the price of cards in the Dollar Tree he about flipped! Publix is an ultra clean, ultra organized store, and their personnel is the best, however their regular priced items are not in my budget. Their buy one get one free are some of the best I’ve seen. My first tip is meal planning, because when I come home for work (I'm a teacher), I swear that I don't have one ounce left of decision making power, so if the menu is not written on my calendar, we will end up taking out. I love all your tips, by the way! I have one extra related to your buying less produce, and it is to cook the right amount, I always use the reference servings for pasta and cook that amount or a little more if I need for next day's lunch. Normally with the exact serving amounts we have more than enough if we add salad and bread. Thank you for the recipe, I had totally forgotten about BLTs! That is going back on our rotating menu!
