20 Ford Commercials from 1976 (Elite, Monte Carlo, Cordoba, more)
The 1976 Ford Elite is a personal luxury car produced by Ford and marketed in North American from February 1974 to 1976, with the name Gran Torino Elite used in the first year. Based on the Torino, the mid-size two-door coupe was intended to be a less expensive Thunderbird alternative to compete with the increasingly popular intermediate personal luxury class of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Buick Regal, Dodge Charger and Chrysler Cordoba. It was essentially the concurrent Mercury Cougar XR-7 with a mild front end restyling to resemble the Thunderbird, different taillamps with a center reflector, unique twin opera windows, and large color-keyed vinyl moldings placed higher on the bodysides. The interiors were identical save for upholstery styles and minor trim.

Description of Ford Mustang taken from Wikipedia "The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. It was initially introduced as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale the following year. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its underpinnings with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment.”

All American cars in the 70's and 80's would have a soft ride and float making handling very dangerous. My late dad's 1978 Malibu V8 cost 7200 and the $10 gm shocks lasted one year or about 12,000 kms. 135hp only from 5 litres. In one of my cars,t the S4 I have 470hp from 3 litres.

The nostalgia of watching these old commercials is cool. They also showcase how far we have come as far as safety standards are concerned. Remember when new car dealers took the hubcaps off the cars and locked them up somewhere safe until the car was sold? Hubcaps were always stolen off the new cars on the lots.
@milfordcivic6755
@milfordcivic6755 5 лет назад
Now they take the wheels and leave the car on the ground. I'd rather have the hubcaps!
@kennethsouthard6042
@kennethsouthard6042 4 года назад
Cars left the factory without hubcaps and they were installed by the dealer as part of the pre-delivery process. Pre-delivery you go through a whole checklist to remove shipping material, clean the car and ensure all fluids are correct. Cars you saw on the lot that had not been through that process were usually fresh off the trailer and kept in the back of the lot. Also whenever you see video of cars leaving the line assembly line with hubcaps on, that was usually to dress the cars up as the video was meant to be released and they wanted the cars to look finished. Now maybe things were different in high crime areas where they would have been more subject to theft, but 99% of all dealerships did it the way I stated in the prior paragraph.

My great Aunt bought a new 1977 Granada. That car was so tight and quiet inside and rode super smooth but still handled and cornered great. Comparing to a Mercedes is apples and oranges but I'd rather have a Granada now. They are more unique looking than a Mercedes of this era those looked the same for years and years.

So in '76 Ford was telling people to consider driving their Ford cars. By the 80s it was guilting them by asking, 'Have you driven a Ford lately?' It should have used the tagline, 'We laid off Joe the Autoworker. Because you didn't drive a Ford lately. Are you happy now?'

I used to drive a none emt ambulance, and rested behind my local hospital at night. Up until 2009 I used to see an older black gentleman, he's a taxi driver. He had a yellow EU MK3 Granada. The shape was very different to the US models and I think most of it was British built, but good God it looked really mint. Being a taxi it must have been to the moon and back, yes mercs are reliable but I doubt the cost is even comparable nor the ease of diy repair.

Back in the day, my parents bought a new baby blue '78 Mercury Monarch Ghia with a blue vinyl top (oy, why?!!). It had sat unsold from the assembly date for nearly a YEAR before my dad bought it for my Mom. I came home to visit and couldn't believe they bought that thing, right down to its wire wheels and pimp-wide factory whitewalls. What were they thinking?? It was loaded with all options and had the 2V 302, and was in typical smog detuned mode from the factory. A childhood buddy who was quite the auto tinkerer (smart dude, worked at JPL/Pasadena as an electrical engineer for years) and taught me everything I know about cars, worked with the carburetor and timing, and managed to wring what felt like another 25 horsepower out of it. He also worked with the linkage on the C4 transmission in some way, so it would upshift more readily and not hang in gears. The result was a torquey, quiet engine with more effortless power delivery. He also put in super heavy duty shocks (stiff shocks and soft springs make for a great ride...never understood soft shocks AND soft springs from the factory) My parents drove that "creampuff", as my dad called it, for 20 years...no engine , tranny or electrical problems, including seats and windows, evey...was absolutely bomb proof. Ah, the good old days.

@@ronp1018 Most mid seventies cars were ugly designs, due to government safety mandates. The 5 mph bumpers made it tough for some manufacturers to create a good looking nose and rear. I think Ford struggled the most with implementing the bumpers into a good design. GM had some nice looking solutions with their urethane nose on the Chevy Laguna S-3. Pontiac IMO/ had some of the best looking mid seventies cars ever made. The Monte is an acquired taste. It's something you fall in love with, if you have one.
