Good review. I just got the CT 20 7 blade with the Honda a few weeks ago. I got it because of the cheaper parts and the reel to bed knife adjustment. CT sent me the new chain adjustment system and just got the bar extension kit which raises the bar height by 4". Nice review.

I've owned a California Trimmer since 1968. I bought a McClain six years ago. Because of problems with bed knife, the mower not moving uphill, and bearings wearing out I pulled the old Cal Trimmer out of the barn, installed a new bed knife, New electric start engine, new chains and I now wonder why I quit using it. The bearings last forever if maintained, you maintain the bearings on the McClain by replacing them. you maintain the bearings on the Trimmer by applying grease. My Trimmer just turned 51 years old.

I had a McLane for 5 years and my neighbor had a California trimmer. He was always working on it and it always left grass on the ground, more than mine. I was always chasing the bed knife as it would distort if the frame shifted since McLane is bolted together. I tried playing with various improvements until I finally gave up and found a used 250hr JD E-cut with groomer and brush when I converted from hybrid Bermuda to Bentgrass. It was worth the investment in pissing off the neighborhood.

Thank you for the feedback and the JD mower is an awesome mower. I definitely feel your pain when your mower breaks down. Had an older Mclane to begin with and then went with cal trimmer and then bought another Mclane. Each mower is great in there own ways which is why i love the comparison. The 25 inch is different. It’s considered a commercial mower. Major difference is that it didn’t use a clutch system, and reel to bedknife adjustment is not the same. I’ve never used one but people say speed it very fast and non adjustable. Thank you for your feedback and support in watching the content 👍🏻

I believe it is important to note than the Mclane Mower is manufactured in America and the other is not. It should also be noted that the roller shown in this video is not the far superior grooved roller which comes on the GR -Series mowers. The addition of any aftermarket accessory voids the manufacturer's warranty on the Mclane mower. We are all entitled to our opinion, but I have sold more than 10,000 engine-powered reel mowers during my 45 year career and the overall satisfaction ratio on the Mclane is the highest of any brand I have sold.

Thank you Mark for your feedback as you bring up a couple of really good points. I plan to do a roller video and will show my greens mower that does have the mclane roller you describe. American made is an important point and should have been brought up. Thank you for your support and viewing my content.

@@dwaynesworldlawn I own Dolphin Outdoor Power Equipment, Inc. , a wholesale lawn & garden equipment distributor in business for 38+ years. We sell to primarily to dealers, but also to golf courses, municipalities, and to homeowners via e-commerce since 1999. We have sold many thousands of several brands of reel mowers, and trust me, no one but us knows what percentage is of one brand or another. Our history as the largest distributor of McLane Reel Mowers has been a very positive experience. McLane Mowers consistently provide our customers with the highest customer satisfaction rating and the lowest warranty ratio of any reel mower brand we have ever sold. This is how we comprehensively and factually compare and rate a product line within the OPE industry. If there was a better Reel Mower than McLane, we would be selling that instead. Regarding aftermarket accessories. we have represented more than 20 well-known brands of outdoor power equipment, and most all of them void their warranty when any aftermarket item is installed. This is done to protect the reliability and longevity of the machine. Many hours of development and testing are required by factory qualified engineers to make even the smallest changes to a mower without affecting it's overall performance. A reel mower must cut very evenly and smoothly and is much more sensitive to alterations than a typical rotary-type mower. This is not our warranty policy, but the policy of just about every mower manufacturer in business today. Lastly, anyone can easily order original McLane replacement parts by calling (800) 992-0177 or visiting the parts department at DolphinOPE.com. We prefer to have our customers email of fax us their parts orders, as this greatly reduces ordering errors and shipping mistakes. In closing, I would like to note that if you ask 10 folks on the internet a question about reel mowers, you're likely to get 11 different opinions, and sometimes none of them are true. Please understand that these respondents are in many different geographical locations, have many different types of turf, have very limited knowledge, or may be just wanting to sell you something. We suggest you always seek the advice of a qualified professional, visit our website at: McLaneReelMowers.com or email us at: Mclane@DolphinOPE.com with your questions.

McLane has HORRIBLE Customer Service Management & Support. And just how are these allegedly "Made In America" when their engines are made in Thailand ? Their advertisements shamefully talk trash about the competition for using foreign parts, and yet on McLane’s, the most complex and the most important part of the mower is built by Honda of Thailand? There’s no way to check where the parts are from, but you can see they look like they’re from a third world country. I can only believe they continue to keep their doors open solely using FALSE ADVERTISING and Unethical Business practices. Because its been my experience that’s how McLane operates daily. These guys are LIARS and THIEVES ! Just notice there aren’t ANY reviews on McLane’s website. Now it’s obvious why! BUYER BEWARE !! AVOID McLane Lawn & Garden Equipment. In my opinion, even IF they were once Made in the USA, (they’re NOT now ) they give "Made In America" such a bad reputation, they'll make you wish you'd bought something "Made In China" instead ! They are an embarrassment to the lawn equipment manufacturing industry, and to American companies in general.

Great review. Mark makes a great point about the CT now being manufactured over seas. I personally have both mowers and something not mentioned, which also surprised me we’re the impressions left in my soil from the CT narrow rear wheels. If your soil has any moisture in it, the CT leaves impressions which is a huge let down when you consider how much time we spend trying to level our lawns. I think the aftermarket comment is nonsense. It’s like saying if I put Goodyear tires on my truck vs the factory BFG’s my vehicle warranty is void. Also, 75% of those “10,000” mowers were actually Tru Cut’s Mark sold. I do look forward to a review with a Tru Cut in the mix! I think then, there will be a definitive winner. The last factor which we get to experience daily, is the lack of support from both companies. You have to send a “fax” to get mclane parts and Trimmer has made getting the right part impossible because they have so many conflicting models (commercial, homeowner, high cut, normal cut, pre 2003 vs post 2014. It’s a mess. Great review, good stuff your doing here Dwayne.

Zoysia grass began to naturally replace my centipede grass several years back. I gave up trying to save the centipede grass as the zoysia was just taking over. Mowing with a rotary blade was "not cutting it" so I purchased a used 20" 10 blade reel McClane. It runs great! I had it sharpened and blade height set. Gotta tell ya, this machine cuts beautifully and has help transform my front lawn. It is not set to cut golf course close, maybe 1 setting higher but it looks great when done. I am not obsessive about my yard by any means but with a little Weed and Feed, regular watering and that mower I get compliments!

Great to hear and love the 10 blade mclanes. I use to own one before the one you see in this video. It was and older model and wish i kept it to be honest. Lol. As far as a golf course look go with looks best for you on the height of cut. From what i hear zoysia is Best cut a little higher and Bermuda. I believe most people say a 1inch HOC is a good height for zoysia. I appreciate the comment and the support 👍🏻

Excellent comparison, thank you! I'm trying to decide between the two. Sounds insane that I would purchase such an expensive mower for 1700 sqft lawn, but I just can't get my Zoysia to look good with my rotary so I'm going to give this a shot. Leaning towards the CT for price, ease of bed knife adjustment, clutch, and because my yard is a long rectangle so I will be turning quite often. It also comes with a Honda, which you did not mention on your video, would you say the Honda engine vs the Briggs is an important consideration?
@dwaynesworldlawn
@dwaynesworldlawn Год назад
I didn’t compare the motors just because you could buy either with a Briggs or Honda motor so i felt the purchase could have either option. If price were the same for both i would choose the Honda motor by far. I definitely would say the Honda gx120 motor is my favorite motor on any lawn equipment. The Honda gx160 is more powerful but much louder in my opnion. During the is shortage of the Honda gx120 motors i know cal trimmer did offer the Honda gx160 motor in its place at the same price. The cal trimmer is truly an awesome mower and know you will be happy with your purchase. The only draw back i would say is the grass catcher as it doesn’t do as good of a job catching clippings as the Mclane does. This may be a mute point if you don’t generally catch clipping but something to consider. Another big change that was not the case at the time i made the video is the price. From what i am hearing the Mclane is much more expensive then the cal trimmer these days and would be something i would mention if i did the video today. Based on that fact i would lean towards the cal trimmer if i were choosing between the 2 today. Thank for you question/comment and appreciate the support 👍🏻

Great review and comparison. However, I think you should also discussed initial cost of both mowers. The McLane is $600 - $700 more than a California Trimmer. Also McLane sells a 20-inch mower with a Honda Engine, listed in their website for $2,170. Because of the purchase price is the reason that I choose a Cal Trimmer.
@dwaynesworldlawn
@dwaynesworldlawn Год назад
It’s a good point, especially in this economy. I would say when i purchased my cal trimmer a couple of years back Mclane were only about 2-300 more and not 6-700. In either event i may do another comparison video in the future and will definitely mention price. Appreciate the comment and support 👍🏻

Andy, PLEASE don't make the mistake I made getting talked into a new McLane Mower in 2023. WHY? Because McLane's New $2400.00 25" Reel Mowers are quite simply, terribly designed, built using Inferior parts, poorly assembled by unskilled labor. They are JUNK. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: Misalignment issues, Annoying Rattles and Vibration Noises at different RPM's, Metal Fatigue, and cracks that develop within the first few weeks, caused by HORRIBLE welding during manufacturing (that gets covered up with paint at the factory), then they slap on some stickers (crooked) with their name and deliver these piss-poor mowers to customers. Great review. I own both. Some observations: The cal trimmer goes up my STEEP hill better, not sure why? it just does. The Mclane's back drive tires wear out pretty darn quick. You don't hear many people replacing the drive tire on the cal trimmer. The Mclane is MUCH easier to roll. if you were older or want something that has little rolling resistance, it's the Mclane. The cal trimmer feels like a tank. Feels heavier. (not sure if it is?). In my eyes, zerk fittings are a good thing. Cal trimmer needs to make the drive-wheel height adjustment better. it needs to have the height adjustment kit installed as a standard option. The Mclane is SLOW. Wish it was faster, just my opinion. Mclane is more fun, the Cal Trimmer is what I use more, however.

@dwaynesworldlawn
@dwaynesworldlawn Год назад
I would not say so. The nice thing about the cal trimmer is that they are less expensive when they need to be replaced as you only need to swap out the blade vs the entire assembly in the Mclane. What can damage the bedknife and this has nothing to do with the brand is that you are careful and only mow grass. This sounds obvious but it important to take steps to ensure you are not mowing twigs, rocks, debri. This will ensure you get the most out of your reel and bedknife. The 25 CT is different as it is a commercial mower. It doesn’t have the same clutch system that is on the 20 inch. I’m sure you’ll do your research and appreciate the feedback 👍🏻

@@dwaynesworldlawn That's roughly my area as well. How long does it take just to cut with the 20"? I am thinking a 25" probably should take a bit faster, but how much faster...thanks.

@@golfshoe9321 Rough Guess. If I do just a single pass probably 30-40 minutes. When you include edging and blowing prob close to an hour. If I double cut its even longer. There are a lot of people that say you will finish alot faster with a 25 and can't say I 100 percent agree. I have a 25 in Greens keeper and it still take just as long. I think a 25 inch will provide nicer fatter stripes and will also be more forgiving on an uneven lawn due to the larger roller or width. Hope that helps...
