I love how the guy in the volcano video just stands around filming for a bit. As soon as I see smoke from a volcano my knees will be banging off my chest as I run 2,000 miles in 3 minutes.

Unlike so many of these 'you wouldn't believe it unless it had been filmed' videos that are often "narrated" by irritating non-comments and statements of the obvious, this series always has useful informative narration. The 'bad farming' incident is an excellent example. Well done.

That Skycrane is so precise because it has an extra rear facing cockpit and operator for stuff like that. It's served longer in civilian roles than it did in the military.
@Bmax86
@Bmax86 10 месяцев назад
Wow thanks for the knowledge
@philsalvatore3902
@philsalvatore3902 7 месяцев назад
Nope. In civil use the rear facing cockpit is not used. After the first few years of service the Army didn't use the aft facing controls either. The command pilot sits on the left looking down through a big bubble window to see the load below. This is standard practice for precision placement long line work, including aerial logging, for many kinds of helicopters. I have done it in the Civil Chinook and BV-107. Our competitors would do it in the Skycrane, Sikorsky S-61, and even the Kamov Ka-32. The left seat has a big pad so the pilot can lean all the way out into the bubble window and fly the helo looking down. It takes a lot of hours to develop the skill to fly that long line looking down but that is how it is accomplished. It's not real good for the pilots back either. Bad backs seem to be part of that line of work.

Those kayakers were stupid for one reason, launching together. The tresspassing or storm drain obstacles are frankly secondary issues in this case. IF his friend had hit something infront to suddenly slow him, the second kayak would have seriously injured if not killed. Its risky enough to do that stunt as it was, but they should have given about 10-15 secs between each other.

I was there in San Francisco in July of 89 my first time visiting The City. It was hard to imagine anything happening to the most beautiful and breathtaking area in the entire country! I went back East for my sophomore year in undergraduate school and a girl I dated at the time ran into the college library were I was working and told me about the quake from watching the World Series! I couldn’t reach my friend who lived in Sacramento for like 2 weeks! Many mixed emotions as I watch this video and the profound sadness I felt about that marvelous city! But also encouraged by the bravery shown by all citizens to help out! God bless San Francisco!

I grew up there. Mom still worked there, and I had moved to So Cal for my husbands job. We couldn't get in touch with her for 24 hours, and only then because she called out to us, not us to her. My IL's were down in the South Bay, and they immediately called us and let us know they were fine, and we told everybody down south near by. We couldn't call into the Bay Area for a few weeks, as I recall.

Thank you for all the positive pieces, i.e., the helicopter with mad skills, the successful landing of the Cessna, etc. It's a nice change to see videos of things working out and going well. Sometimes watching disaster after disaster just becomes monotonous. Do we become numb to these things? We shouldn't. BTW, I think what is called a "firenado" in the video should be called a "whirling dervish." It's not. A whirling Dervish is actually a specific type of Muslim dance. But the name sounds so much cooler.

23:20 yes but using helicopters required more setup time per tower and requires teams to go out into these remote areas weeks before hand to build the base and set up those ramps you see to give the pilot something to set the tower down on to. They dont use helicopters for speed, they use them because its physically impossible to get cranes out into these areas.
