Power liftgate? Side mirror blinkers? A fully kitted 4runner that hasn't seen 1 mile of off-road driving. This guy is your typical California, Wrangler/4Runner owner that feels they need a full RCI kit and lockers to make it over speed bumps at their local Trader Joe's.
The positives greatly outweigh the negatives... the 4Runner provides a strong and flexible platform for modification and upgrade to make it extremely capable offroad. I can live with the "dislikes" in favor of the capabilities offroad. Will negative reviews like this be seen by Toyota for possibly improving things people don't like in future models? YES, ABSOLUTELY. My hope is that the design improves substantially in future generations for my benefit and the benefit of many others. After all it's not rocket science to improve many of the design aspects.
Yep Toyota paint is a joke. Just look around and notice Toyota's on the road... if they aren't garaged or parked in shade every day, the paint fades and breaks down quickly. 5 year old Toyota's out there are fading fast if kept in the elements.
I just bought a TRD Offroad Premium and I am starting to regret my decision. I can agree with most of your complaints. I can't believe that a $40K+ truck doesn't have push to start or better displays and so much plastic. The new Tacomas have better technology. The 4Runner is a nice looking truck, but man they are expensive.
FCO - Given what's lacking in the 4Runner, they are quite pricey. The locking rear diff, crawl control features, and off-road driving dynamics make it worth it though. I know all cars have plastic interiors but the 4runner plastic has an extra cheap feeling to it. So many other cars that are cheaper than 4runner have higher quality plastic that cleans well, doesn't scratch easily, and FEELS solid and sturdy. Don't regret your purchase until you've put her into some real challenging off-road terrain or driven on sand dunes (she'll handle like a BOSS my friend).
At least Range Rovers come standard with Diff Breathers... you can drive them off the dealer lot and straight into a river. Toyota 4Runner... um... NO... first buy ARB diff breather kit, then install, then drive across river. I wouldn't want to do maintenance on a Range Rover after 60K miles but they sure are capable vehicles STOCK. I also wouldn't want to pay the sticker price for a new Range Rover... yikes. Plus, there isn't a large aftermarket industry for Range Rovers and that's bothersome.
Really like your performance of auditing and notes of abservation. Great videos. I really like the people whom reviewing the way you and others do, without any fan related issue. Wish you a good luck. Hi Hi from Saudi Arabia.

"plasticy" go feel an audi or a volvo landrover anything its all plastic bud. also this is 2017 the sheet metal on any car is thin its because of weight, "cheap paint" its the same shit same suppliers. on and on man you sound like a dream to be around
Some of your complaints are completely unwarranted. Don't park next to people at the store or find end spots. Having to walk a little farther will help to avoid door dings. Every roof rack designed for the 4Runner clears the antenna. I thought everyone knew not to touch the paint when closing a lift gate. It easily swings down, or do it right and touch the license plate (or the black plastic with the 4Runner logo). Touching the dirty paint looks terrible and scratches it. When airing up and airing down the tires, it much more accurate to use actual tire gauges vs. trusting the computer. The 2017 model has TRD embroidered in the headrest. Ergonomics are very subjective. Your phone complaints are not my experience with a 2017. The gas tank it 23 gallons, not 20. Inside the tail gate gets dirty...come on! You just sound like you're whining about tiny issues, or non-issues.
I don't mind parking far and walking... it's my typical MO. But there is no denying that the doors ding far too easily. Not ever roof rack clears the antenna (I like low profile racks, the the Ecotechne). I close the lift gate using the plastic handle slots at the bottom of the gate (or on rare occassion I will push on the "4Runner" logo plastic. Saw a 2017 TRD Pro after posting this and discovered they added embroidered headrests - GOOD. Of course the TPMS sensors in the tires aren't as accurate as a real tire gauge but it's no excuse for Toyota to be 10 years behind everyone else in this area. For a rough estimate of tire pressure, it is a nice convenience. 23 gallon tank is true but probably a bad idea to drain it past 20 - you can mess up your fuel gauge and suck debris into the fuel lines. For real world usefulness - it's a 20 gallon tank. Don't get me wrong, I love my 4Runner, but it would be nice to see Toyota make some "easy" improvements. We'd all love them even more!
Thanks for the tip aryaicom but I don't use tampons because they don't provide enough coverage... I prefer large pads with wings! I'm on the t4r forum under the handle "IN4RNO"... looking forward to connecting with you there!
Thanks for the video.... I think the power issue will be addressed once the Magnusson Supercharger is released. Most of your concerns are my concerns also. Nice job.
I looked on the URD website and saw they have the supercharger for my 4.7L v8. Not sure it is CARB legal though. That would be my only thing. :) With all the new toys coming out for 4runners it makes chosing that over a Jeep Grand Cherokee much easier.
As for the info display, keep in mind Toyota is known for keeping displays like that consistent because they LAST. Its not about being fancy but about not breaking. Same is true for interior components. They won’t be expensive to replace. I plan to get one of these and I like how simple everything is so there’s less to break over the years.
The fog lights on my 07 MDX don't stay on when the brights are on either. I definitely can see how these cons of the 4Runner annoy you. Especially the low powered engine and the cheap plastics everywhere. You got a really nice ride overall though man.
Idk if it’s the fact that you have a swiffer in your glove box or that you still have the tag hanging from the glove box or if it’s the fact you were complaining about getting your hands dirty while off-roading and god forbid transfer some dirt to your steering wheel. Or it’s just your voice but fuck this just irritated me all the way through haha
Fair critiques. I completely agree. Just got my 2018 and, sadly, not much has changed. When you pay $40+ for a vehicle it needs to live up to the price tag regardless of how you will use it. Even though I love my 4runner it could definitely be better. So many comments on this vid make me SMH.
cant really be disappointed about no diesel, toyota offer zero diesel in America. if they actually offered ANY here then you can complain that they don't put it in the 4runner.
Nic Restrepo - it's a good point. I guess I am hugely disappointed that Toyota doesn't offer any Diesel engine in the US. Does anyone know why this is so? My perception is that it is US political restriction that is prohibiting Toyota from doing so.
Wolfgang51501986 i think it has to do with demand and the amount of R&D money they have to spend to get it legal in the US. Until trucks like the colorado or grand Cherokee diesel start taking a share of te Tacoma or 4Runner market they won't be in a hurry to spend the millions it would require to make it pass here. Also, Toyota is VERY conservative as a whole. Take these tuck for example. Both the 4Runner and Tacoma still run on 15+ year old platforms and just barely this year they put a new engine in the Tacoma. They really follow the "if it ain't broke" mantra
Its actually just emissions. Toyota has offered a turbo diesel for ages in other markets but we have such strict standards it wont pass and would not be cost effective to make it pass. Ford and Volkswagen have both been in the hot seat for their diesels tricking emissions tests.

If you have so MANY dislikes, why buy it? There are MANY SUVs that have luxury and not "plastic", etc. I bought mine cause the likes and loves. I understand you might not "like" everything, but wow. Trade it in and get something else. I'm keeping mine!
I have a 2017 TRD Pro in cement and agree with about half of your issues. 1 small feature you didn't mention that bothers me nearly every day is - It doesn't have memory seating - my wife, my daughter and I all drive the vehicle and I am constantly having to readjust the seating 😡
The owner took her out on short drives to keep the tires in good shape and the fluids moving. It definitely never sat for too long. I love my truck too!
These complaints are ridiculous lol. 4runners are off road utilitarian vehicles. Fuck push button start, power tailgates and all that crap. Just more crap to break. People like this are killing off and pussifying vehicles like the 4runner.
I agree with you on almost all of thos.Toyota paint is unbelievably soft. Especially on my black trd pro. As a detailer, the swirls drive me nuts. Just don't touch the paint with your hands.. the fact that there aren't any engines choices kinda sucks. Lighting both interior and exterior are pretty dim. That being said, they look so badass haha
LOL. She's a heavy beast with an underpowered regular fuel engine. Putting in a diesel with more torque will allow Toyota to add more features (which adds more weight). They're doing their best to keep weight down, understandably, but to the detriment of a rigid tough body and FEATURES. So, yes, in essence, that is the easy option.
Great video, I have a 2017 TRD PRO in Cement color; my fogs don't come on when the high beams are on. I have a 2016 Tacoma 4x4 Off Road as well: it also does the same thing.
I owned a Pontiac Grand AM GT that worked the same way. When high beams were on, fog lights would not come on. I always assumed it was because you should not run your high beams in the fog.
Many of the simple features that you have listed as negatives are actually positives to me. The "cheap" plastic is again to save weight and and for EPA concerns. Your already complaining about weight and then complain about PSI systems and automatic rear door openers. I do not want those items on my car to have more wiring and complexity to need to maintain and troubleshoot. It's shame to hear you say these things when you have one of the most sought after 4X4's on the planet. My impression is that you should have bought a luxury SUV and then modded it to be more off road capable.
Interior is very comparable to my 06 trailblazer ss. It has a bunch of cheap plastic as well as most gm models of that era, BUT even I have tps readings for each tire lol. I really like these new 4runners but damn, for $35k+ you don't get much. Very unfortunate.
Toyota knew what they were doing, and people around the world that actually USE these vehicles through the paces Daily don't even complain like you. Do you even use this for anything besides mallcrawling?
Oh yes. Absolutely. I really want the new Magnusson Supercharger that just released in December 2017. They are currently difficult to get... need to get in line. About $6400 after taxes and fees for the whole kit. I'd prefer to install it myself. That will be a MOST FUN project. Will certainly do a detailed video on it once it's all done.
No premium sound on the 5th gen 4runner from 2010-2018 I believe (unless you get a Limited). The 2019 4Runner (just revealed yesterday, Feb 8, 2018) will boast the JBL, as an optional upgrade I believe. Other changes include the move to Fox suspension from Bilstein, an FJ-throwback roof rack (sucks badly), red paint on the TRD skid plate lettering, LED fog lights, and the old FJ blue color added to the mix. THAT'S IT. No upgraded headlights (which are horribly dim and horribly rated). I really hope Toyota is taking their sweet time to get the 6th gen 4runner sorted out well to fix all the crummy things that are wrong with the 5th gen. Can't wait to see what they come up with!
#4 and 5 are to be said with ALL Japanese vehicles.. I got the G37 and I can say the exact same. Also got the wrangler and although the steel is better, paint is shit as well.
Well, my old 2008 Acura RDX door panels were AWESOME. They were very sturdy and held up well against door dings. Also, I was VERY happy with the quality of the Acura paint. I do feel Honda does a much better job over Toyota on factory paint. My twin has a G35 and had to have the entire car repainted due to bad factory paint. Good to know about the Wrangler paint as well.
you should of bought a 4th gen 4runner and lower gens. For better paint, better exterior materials, no stupid attenals dicks sticking out on roof, better plastics, I believe the older model v6 are better in torque, could get the v8 versions as well. It also comes with more chrome. Also comes with a door dinger installed already on the doors. Better buy with real value cost to the trucks compared to new 5th gen models. And if you need more power than turbo or supercharge it for less than $1000 and u can get way more power and still have a reliable engine.
I was looking at the couple myself I hear you loud and clear I end up buying the Lexus GX I had the same problems as you do the difference is I could not get over them and apparently you did I could not by the truck mainly because of the interior it's so out-of-date is ridiculous I have a lot of toys and hobbies I needed something with some power and the tow package I love my GX 460 2016 the only good news is you have a really reliable SUV not a crossover b*******
Ralph... THANK YOU. Glad you agree with me on these little things because they do matter in the context of what's available out there in the market today. I drove a GX460 (Prado) in New Zealand on a vacation there and I was very pleased with it. A very capable and comfortable ride indeed. It feels good to be out of my RDX crossover and in to something more capable and masculine.
News that matter - torque - YES. Raw HP for towing and highway passing uphill - NO. Don't let emotional attachment to 4Rs force you to overlook weaknesses. I could easily beat a 5th gen 4Runner up a decent hill climb at 5000' altitude in a Ford Escape. Yes, Toyota, that IS a problem. Get some people on it!
Astute observation Boo. Given the weight of the 4Runner and considering GVWR, the 4Runner needs a more powerful engine, PERIOD. For slow overlanding adventures in low gear, the engine performs just fine.
Very reliable! BUT, yes, sadly, cheap plastics all around and UNDERPOWERED. Can't wait to put the new Magnusson supercharger kit on her! (+30% HP and +27% Torque increase per Magnusson)
Dude this video is a total joke do you even know what your talking about cheap plastic? Ever buy any of those plastics ? Not cheap second your compairing paint to a BMW witch uses a total different base coat clear coat system they cannot be compared BMW also uses ceramic clear coat extremely expensive I'm sure a dealer ship would reclear your 4 runner for about 10 grand with ceramic clear but hear is the trick ceramic clear looks better does better with scratches but chips more than your regular urethane clear coat so that's your trade off ....you should have just bought a Ford I love my 2nd gen 3rd gen and 5th 4runners
How do you start hating a 4runner, then compare paint jobs between BMW and Toyota. Do you even know that this plastic 4runner will not only outlast your BMW, but will hold its resale value x100 better. I guess now all that plastic stuff isn't so bad right? Omg, I cant even finish watching this video. This is got to be the worst soyboy video to date.
Nahh, maybe more horsepower though. Or a supercharger kit from TRD would do the trick. When offroading, this thing comes alive. Plenty of torque for crawling.
