The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is my favorite, and one of my favorite movies. It strikes a surreal balance between realism and lyricism. It feels like an eerie old photograph brought to life. The matter of fact yet poetic narrator makes it feel like real life doesn't have to be overly dramatized, that real life is poetic enough.

The Assassination Of Jesse James is a tremendous movie. People for some reason think its too slow, but I think its perfect in bringing you back to that time in the country. We need a 4K Directors Cut as it is supposedly 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's 35 minutes left out!

Yes I was suprised not to see either in honorable mentions at least. Slow West is one of my favorite westerns. It’s got everything…unrequited love story, an outlaw running into his former gang, his redemption arc, a priest w a sniper rifle in guitar case and the hero dies in the end. Also Bone Tomahawk and Once upon a time in Mexico would make my own list and of course There Will Be Blood ! In no particular order 3:10 to Yuma Sister Brothers Lonesome Dove Tombstone unforgiven Godless Hell or Highwater There will be blood Once Upon a Time in Mexico No Countey For Old Men For A few dollars more Slow west Wind River Sicario Bone Tomahawk Magnificent 7 But -#1 w/ a bullett….DEADWOOD

@@TheGourdKing I disagree. I have a bias as BT is prob my #1 favorite film lol but I'd put Bone Tomahawk above ALL the films on the Honorable Mention list at the VERY least. I'lll keep it off the main list because of the violence but Bone Tomahawk looks, sounds, and feels more authentic/realistic, has better acting, and a richer story than basically every flick here. The Assassination of Jesse James... maybe the only film that looks better

It IS possible!! Jokes aside, obv I'm just a Bone Tomahawk fanboy tho lol! Tho it's basic plot is classic Western fair, it plays out and features some new and refreshingly unique ideas. If you're just a big fan of Westerns, like I am, and like to read at all, you should check out the two Western novels A. Craig Zahler wrote himself... 'A Congregation of Jackals' and 'Wraiths of the Broken Land' Same type of character driven stories like his films, same great dialogue, and of course, his trademark of sporadic bursts of horrific violence!

As modern day westerns go Open Range is my favourite! but in my opinion the greatest western of all time is Once upon a time in the west.

Appaloosa had some fairly realistic gunfights, and that it didn't make this list in any way is criminal. Viggo had an 8 ga shotgun, for crying out loud!

I’m not sure if it’s classified as a western, but I thought Quigley down under would make the honorable mentions list.

The Assassination of Jesse James redefined the genere. Music, static, soundtrack, script, everything changed after this movie.

Rango should've at least been an honorable mention

I feel like I'd like "No Country For Old Men" a little better if it were a full blown western, perhaps set just over a century earlier, in 1870 rather than 1980.

Missed Lonesome Dove. Probably would’ve ranked 3 on this list but it’s a mini series
