The self titled one is Portishead's second album (from 1997). Dummy was their debut (in 1994). That Toxic album cover looks anything but metal. Very strange :) I first learned about Betty Davis from those LITA reissues. I have them all on CD. No vinyl, unfortunately. The backing band (basically The Family Stone without Sly, led by Larry Graham) on this one is just STELLAR! I don't think I've ever heard funk so raw and heavy. There is also an anectode that when she was Miles Davis' wife, she was the one who recommended the album title Bitches Brew. Miles wanted to name it Witches Brew first, but was very easily convinced. Great selections overall.

Listener is SO good, one of my absolute favorites. Their album Wooden Heart means so much to me. They’re from Kansas City, and I’m pretty sure they self-identify as “Talk Rock”. Wooden Heart, Time is a Machine, and Return to Struggleville are all fantastic. Dan Smith is also a super genuine and wholesome guy. Big fan!

Glad to see you digging Townes. You must track down Live At The Old Quarter. A top live album for me and the way you should hear his songs, stripped down playing to a small crowd in a sweltering hot hell hole in Texas. You should also grab Guy Clark’s Old No. 1 if you come across it. Part of his Outlaw country crew and an amazing songwriter on the level of Townes.

Someone beat me to it on the Portishead album. Their debut was Dummy, then Portishead, then Third. The two related albums to watch out for a Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man, album Out of Season and the Jazz act Get the Blessing which is the drummer who plays in Portishead :) I think two of their albums were released on vinyl and the had one 7" single Bleach Cake / The Unnamable.

Do you know the album Cold House by Hood? If you like that Portishead one and the David Byrne/Eno, and other things I've seen you talk about it, you might like it. It's from the early noughties, out on Domino here in the UK, and is sort of a mix of indie, post-rock and electronica and features two of the guys from Clouddead on it.

Yeah unfortunately Black Holes and Revelations is a pretty underwhelming pressing. It would be my top choice for a MOFI treatment if I could choose. The Resistance is great though. The Exogenesis Symphony at the end is one of my favorite things they've ever done.
