We find usually the #1 cause is repetitive trauma, the key can be trimming, soaking and using the nail file as much as possible before using medication. But be safe and do it with doctor supervision!

Wanted to add two things that are working for me: drying the nail with a hair dryer after showering, and letting the nail get direct sunlight daily. Since fungi grow in dark, wet places, it makes since to do the opposite and do light and dry.
@DrTomBiernacki
@DrTomBiernacki Год назад
Steven, thanks for the great response! We are grateful for your support. You are absolutely correct - nail and skin fungus growth is affected and impeded by sunlight, heat (but be careful to not burn your skin), good ventilation, and keeping affected area dry. However, it takes a longer time of repeated treatments to successfully eliminate fungus. Just remember that it takes about 6 months to grow new healthy nails on your toes. If possible, we would appreciate a quick and easy rating from you, and a good rating makes a BIG difference for us! g.page/r/CZWo3fJqJrVpEBM/review Thanks again for watching! Great advice. I have one more tip, but don't say it will work for everyone. I'm very fit, don't smoke, 22 bmi, 64 years old, and I got the fungus, 2 big toes from the gym, probably the changing room. I tried a brand name paint on liquid which did work to some extent, but slooowwwlyyy...lol. So talked to my fitness consultant (ok, not a podiatrist I know) and she recommended applying Povidon iodine once per day as she had anecdotal knowledge that it works. And boy did it work for me. It absolutely wiped it out at double the speed of the over the counter liquid. Now, maybe as I'm quite fit, and other factors helped it work for me, so not saying it's a miracle cure, but Povidon iodine is really cheap and might be worth a try. I think there even might be a colorless one if you don't want the temporary staining. It might help, however, listen to the podiatrists advice!

The highest rated over the counter remedies have tea tree oil and iodine. The iodine cause nail staining, which takes ~a year to grow out, but still better than the fungus. These work for sure, and do not cause liver damage like oral meds can, but you must apply them twice a day, and file away thickened nail, and do this for up to 2 months (usually 1 month, but to be sure).

I'll add one more to your list to help cure the problem and prevent future recurrence; Expose your toe nails to the air and sun. Barefoot may not be the best solution, but sandals or flip flops can be worn whenever practical. Bare toes eliminates moisture and prevents heat build up. Sunlight and UV rays kill fungi and bacteria.

@@Plainsimple67 None of the RU-vid doctors seem to be referring to that, but I do know that several of the oral medications that can be prescribed for toenail fungus have a side effect of causing liver damage. My mother acquired a toe nail fungus on her left big toe at age 30 when she was in the Air Force during WWII. Her nail also reached huge thick proportions, about 1 inch thick, until it became painful and difficult to find shoes. Several doctors, over many decades, told her there was nothing that could be done about it, except filing it to reduce it's thickness. She reduced it by endless filing with an emery board, so that she could wear shoes comfortably, but it still looked terrible. Ladies open toed shoes, fashionable in the 60's, were off limits for her. In the 80's when I acquired a Dremel Tool, I started addressing the problem for her and was able to further reduce the nail and make it almost presentable by attacking it every month or two. Unfortunately, by the early 2000's, I had caught "Mom's Big Fat Toenail", probably from the grinding dust. When Mom passed away at age 97, she still had her "Big Fat Toenail". You can do the math; it stayed with her for 67 years. For the past six months, I've been following a daily regiment of sanding, application of iodine and Vick's vapor rub, rotating and sanitizing shoes, frequent sock changes (2-3 times per day) and I now have half of a healthy nail growing out of my big toe. Probably going to be another six months before the new nail grows in fully. Monica, you have about a year of work ahead of you. Treat the nail bed where you lost the nail and also treat the other toe nails to prevent spread to them, or in case the fungus is already in them. All the best!

Probably, if you do it twice a day, but that could also cause other damage. the traditional medicines ( various tree and plant oils) work also, without risk, but they do require diligence to apply them twice daily for as much as 2 months.

Michigan Foot Doctors, I landed here because I am trying to learn how to take care of a bare nail plate after a damaged toenail comes off. Could you make a video about that, please? I feel down 2 months ago and the nail got pulled back partially and it was damaged. It came off tonight. I thought I still had a long way to go, but it came off! Who do I take care of my bare nail bed. It looks kind of vulnerable. Help!

We really appreciate that you came to us for help, and believe us we would really love to help, but unfortunately there are rules preventing an answer. For a problem this complex and with so many variables, you really would benefit most from seeing a podiatrist in person. A problem of this nature really does require a proper history and physical. By getting non-specific advice online, it really can make your problem worse. Thank you so much for being a fan and we hope to make better and more educational videos in the future. I cured my own and want to share how. Each evening (or every other?) I soaked my feet in the hottest water I could tolerate, after a few minutes when it cooled down a little, I added more boiling water from a tea kettle I had prepared. Got water back up to that point I could tolerate. Periodically took my feet out to dig out the fungus that had softened. At some point I added a dash of bleach to the water (maybe near the end of the soaking session). This was on my feet, and I had selected some chosen digging tools, what ever was small and worked well.

I think the fact I have the genetic HAE may be why even with Epsom soaks, the tree oil and ciclopirox it never goes away on two toes. Okay so next.. I guess I’ll look for a podiatrist! Thanks again.

It's best to file down the nails and also treat them topically, from the outside, if taking the oral medications to attack the issue from the inside. I tried clearing my toenail issues twice with oral medications. The issue came back because I didn't treat the issue from the outside also. Some of the infected nail remained after the oral treatments, enough to cause it to spread again. Looking back I should not have trusted the doctors wholly. I should have been addressing the issue from the outside at the same time that I was trying to treat it internally with pills. Best wishes.
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 Год назад
Filing down the nail is an absolute must. First, filing down the nail helps to return its' look and shape to something that resembles normal. Second, the top shinny surface of the nail will prevent topical solutions from penetrating into the nail to reach the nail bed. Even when you are well into the lengthy treatment process and you have the nail thin and looking "normal", you need to sand and abrade the surface of the nail about once a week, enough to remove that top shiny layer from the nail as you continue to apply the topical treatment.

The oral treatments are horrifically bad for your liver. Do not use them unless everything else has failed first and you just can't stand it. Tea oil and an emory board work for almost everyone...lots of other topical solutions work too, epsom salts etc.

Even if you have new shoes, the same thing is going to happen, right? So what to do about that? How do you protect the uninfected toes? And I wish there were more specific recipes and information about how to use tea tree oil and vinegar and the other home remedies. And if I'm using my hands to clean my toenail fungus am I going to get nail fungus in my hands, how to prevent that?

Toenail fungus is so hard to get rid of. Thanks for sharing this information. My nail fungus appeared on my big toe three years ago. I went to see a doctor who instructed me to use topical Loceryl nail medicine until the nail fungus disappeared. Loceryl contains the active ingredient amorolfine and I used it for over a year, which was of no help. I went to the doctor again, who prescribed oral terbinafine medicine. I have been taking terbinafine for 4.5 months now and the drug has been effective in nail fungus. There is only about 4 mm of nail fungus on my big toe and I will continue to eat terbinafine until it is completely free of nail fungus. My doctor estimates that terbinafine should be taken for at least 6 months until the nail fungus is completely healthy and no nail fungus is visible.
@Juha74
@Juha74 2 года назад
I think terbinafine causes significant side effects for me such as skin rash, fatigue and dizziness, and vague feeling. I underwent a four-month liver test on a doctor’s prescription because I understand terbinafine is very toxic to the liver. My liver test values were still within the limits.

Mine is very early stages. I think it’s fungus? My two big toenails have orange on the sides of them. Mostly towards the front. Doctor said do Vicks vapor rub every day for two months and file the nail down. That’s it. So hopefully I’m getting this early. He almost even seemed annoyed that I was suggesting. I need to do something to treat it lol. He said, I pay attention to symptoms more than other people. But it’s like you said, Better to get it before it turns into something worse. He’s probably just used to people coming to him when things are already bad. Is it true that I shouldn’t worry about using the same towel for my feet as I do for the rest of my body after a shower? Somebody said I need a separate towel. But from my understanding, if I was going to get fungus on my face or the rest of my body, it already would’ve happened by now if it’s only on my feet. Especially when I am addressing it right now wearing Vicks. I’m also once per week, applying my Clorox bathroom cleaner gel for a couple minutes before I start my shower. Also, they say it takes a year to grow out a toenail, but after my doctor visit two weeks ago, I trimmed the toenails. Then yesterday they were already long enough to where I needed to trim them again. And I mean it’s looking like the toenail clipping in your video, it’s not just a little bit. It was a normal amount. So I guess my toenails grow fast. But I was excited thinking I was going to be able to just trim off most of the orange. And I guess I did but I look at them and they still look orange. Does this mean I’m not getting proper circulation for my immune system to fight this off properly? My left calf is missing hair on the left side of it. Like mostly all gone. And I have bad varicose veins there. The doctor said he’s not worried about it. Excuse me? And I even told him my feet get cold or sometimes they feel like they are cold but they’re not actually cold. He was trying to shoo me out the door and he said well if we want to talk about that more, we will have to do another visit. After he literally just told me he’s not worried about it and I’m too young to do tests about my circulation. I just don’t see how these could not be related. I also told him how my fingernails, you can see the vertical lines on my fingernails when you couldn’t before. He just said that’s hard to diagnose. He didn’t really wanna talk about that either. I wasn’t trying to give him a list of things to worry about. I was trying to let him know all of my symptoms, so if there were any links, he could try and find them. I also have low TSH And it’s been low the past three times. I’ve done blood test. And it’s gone lower each time. But he swears my thyroid is fine because T4 and T3 is normal. Anyway, I don’t have blue toenails or anything. It’s just orange on the edges. It’s been going on for a few months. And now it looks like there is some black on the edges. Or at least a little darker. But when I put my fingernail under the toenail, to kind of lift it up a little bit, the toenail looks white. So maybe it’s under the toenail. It might just be gunk. Because now I use a toothbrush on my feet in the shower. Well, my big toes mainly. But the problem with that is I think the bristles getting in between the nails, is pushing the gunk deeper, I guess. I say gunk, but it’s not like this horrendous thing. I take care of myself, probably more than other people do to most people my nails probably just look like normal feet. But normally I can put my finger nail under there and scrape out gunk in the shower and everything is good. It seems like lately it feels like the sides of my toenails are glued to my toes. I thought it was weird that my doctor told me to also file my nail every day. I’m definitely not going to do that every day. He didn’t explain why. But now, after hearing that people, with bad cases have super thick toenails, come to think of it whenever I trim my toenails they do kind of feel extra crispy. I always thought that was weird like due to lack of circulation but maybe it just means the toenails are starting to thicken up a little bit. So I bought a pack of like 20 files for like two bucks. So I don’t really use any of them. Maybe a couple times a week I just file the nail down a little bit.
@switchunboxing
@switchunboxing 11 месяцев назад
On top of that, I am taking my Clorox bleach bathroom gel to my toes. Maybe once per week. Just putting the gel on the toenails and leave it on there for a couple minutes before my shower. Not sure if it’s helping but worth a shot. Plus, I was wearing the same pair of socks for four days in a row. But I work in retail it’s not like they were sweaty or anything. Maybe they were and I just never realized it. I mean my feet were not wet or anything. But I guess moisture isn’t always something that we can detect on our own. Now I’m wearing one pair per day. It kind of feels silly. Like after work yesterday I was like? I’m going to just throw these in the hamper? They felt like perfectly fine socks. But I guess especially now that I know I probably have toenail fungus, it’s better to take precautions. Not to mention, I cleaned out the shower floor with the bleach gel. Honestly, I hadn’t done that probably in like a year. And wouldn’t you know it, there’s actually orange around the drain. And the shower curtain liner. I might just get a new liner. Do you think it’s possible I can I am getting the fungus from my shower? So I guess cleaning the shower every once in a while will be a help as well. I definitely know there is crispy black mold that falls down from the plastic shower wall every now and again. I’m guessing it’s really bad Behind the plastic wall and that it just gets moist and falls down sometimes. I bet you if I lift up that plastic wall I’m just imagining an entire black wall but I could be wrong. That can’t be too healthy. Now I just need to find out why I get red dots on my skin sometimes. The doctor told me to just start taking Claritin every month. Again, he just seems annoyed. Any time I’m bringing up some thing I want help with. He just said he has no way of telling me what’s causing it. Well no shit. But I mean you could help me try to figure it out. Damn.

You don't need to go vegan to get super healthy. Keto meat lifestyle works great if you need to lose weight. Key thing is to cut out sugar and reduce carbs, use intermittent fasting to really lose the weight. Trimming, filing the nails and using white iodine and Vicks vapour rub gets results. The process can take months but stick to it. Great video - thanks.

I was just speaking to my father, who has toenail fungus on both feet, quite bad, or did at least. He has now cured it on one foot, and it's clearing on the other. He uses a UK product called Germolene cream. I don't know the ingredients, but it is an antiseptic cream, so maybe any antiseptic cream would work? It does make some sense, because antiseptics are supposed to prevent the growth of different microorganisms like bacteria and fungus. I looked up Germolene and toenail fungus on Google, and couldn't find a thing, other than one post, that looked genuine from someone who said it cured them. My dad applies it every three days, under the end of the nail after trimming them a little. I guess he could do it more often, but he showed me his foot and it looks 100% clear, the other foot still has it, but he says it's improved like the other did. Now one foot is clear, he's sown a little thread onto certain socks to mark them, so he doesn't wear the socks from his infected foot on the clear foot. And he puts a little antiseptic cream on the nail clippers after using them. I also have it on one foot, so I might try it, see if it works. It will take months to cure though, his did, I guess because you can only really hope to slow it down, stop it's growth, and wait for healthy nail to grow. I'm gonna copy and paste this comment and repost it on other videos, because it has worked for my dad, I've seen it with my own eyes, so I'll spread the word, good luck with it! One thing I would add, fungus likes moisture and darkness, he doesn't take his socks off much, or wear sandals inside, but I think that would make sense to do as well as keeping nails short, and using the cream.

He found the treatment truly effective. In only few weeks, his 2 pinkie and large toes are treated; nevertheless, stubborn fungus infection .on the nail’s edge is really tough to eliminate.. .

The Only Thing That Worked For Me after 20 years of infection is Low Carbs Diet (Fungus Like Carbs) and IODINE 5%. It literally Destroyed My Heavy Tonail Fungus. Yes I trim and file my nails. One single drop each day for few months cured my 10 toenails. I’ve been consulting doctors tried many prescriptions oral topical. Iodine cost 2$ and it’s really good. Much better than exilor pen presented in this video.

Thanks for mentioning low carb. I assumed it would help because it has helped with other fungal infections and candidiasis. I’m trying to go super low carb. I did it before. Have to do it forever

Eucalyptus essential oil works. I put 1 drop on each nail twice a day. It took about 20ml. Can't say how long it took. Tried Tea tree essential oil which helped but did not cure it.

I walk a lot. Big toe hit shoe, bruised, and eventually separated with another one growing underneath. It grew back ugly and some of the others started to thicken.. Finally went 2 months ago to a podiatrist who took a clipping and sent to a lab.. Came back no fungus or cancer. Prescribed 40% urea and sent me along my way. Since then one of my good nails started itching around the cuticle, turned black and fell off with blood underneath. Now my right toe is starting to itch and has a grey cast to it. Getting really getting frustrated. What should I do now?

Look into ozone. It’s a strong antifungal antibacterial etc. and it’s a gas so it won’t stain your shoes

I got three toenails removed about four months ago and the toenails grew back with fungus. What did I do wrong? Any advice? I was applying topical lacquer to the skin where the toenail should be and still nothing has worked.

I am 60 and have had toenail fungus since I was 24. I had it on 2 nails, the big toe and middle toe of one foot. Griseofulvin ( for a ringworm infection!)worked, but it came back because I didn't maintain it with a topical cream. Laser treatment did not work. Just this year I got rid of all of my toenail fungus. It required twice daily massaging with generic Lamisil cream into and around each nail and into the cuticle using cotton swabs. I was careful to avoid cross contamination by using fresh swabs and doing uninfected toes first then doing the infected toes. It takes about a pea sized amount of cream for each foot. I apply it without fail morning and night. ( brush teeth/ apply toe medicine) for 6 months. After 6 MONTHS about half of the nail had grown out healthy and pink on each infected toe. At that point, my Podiatrist surgically removed the nail of the Big toe completely . It was done in the summer, so I was able to wear Teva sandals after a few days, and I could wear sneakers after a couple of weeks while it grew back. The post surgical regime involved hot soaks with epsom salts for a couple of weeks a few times per day. I continued the generic Lamisil cream regime on all of my toes except for the Big toe that was healing from surgical removal. After a few weeks I was again applying the generic lamisil cream to ALL OF MY TOENAILS morning and night. My fungus is gone from both infected nails. The middle toe recovered with just the topical medication, the big toe required topical, surgical removal and then topical medication was resumed. I am religious about wearing flip flops outside of my own shower. I will be applying the topical cream morning and night FOREVER, because I am prone to this, and do not want it back. I also reapply the Lamisil after I bath or shower ( basically any time my feet get wet) I will never use polish or get a pedicure. They both promote fungus. I switch my shoes, change my socks frequently and give my toes as much air and light as possible. I sterilize my nail clippers. I wash them with hot water, a brush and Hibiclens. I dry them and place them in a preheated oven to bake at 350 for 35 minutes. I never share clippers. I scrub my bathtub with. Dawn dish soap, and water using a clean broom, rinse, then repeat with the broom and baking soda and finally apply a bleach and water solution, It sits for 20 minutes and then is rinsed. I wash my bedsheets with hot water and a capful of bleach at least once per week. I often wear thin white socks to bed to keep the cream from getting on my sheets. So a year after the surgical removal, the Big toe nail has grown back and I am completely fungus free. This must seem like a ridiculous amount of work, but for me it was worth it. Fungal nails were a constant source of shame and embarrassment... but no more! I hope that this helps someone.

@@CLord-gs7nj Wow! That sounds like so much work, but if it is what I need to do to get rid of the fungus, then it shall be done. I have had toenail fungus for over 6 years. It is time to get serious.

@CLord-gs7nj Год назад
@@daniellabaldeon3389 Good luck to you. You should start to see some pink nail growing from the cuticle outward in a few months. The twice per day Lamisil regime was suggested by my Family Dr. He cautioned me to not bother UNLESS I did it at least twice a day everyday. Once I had a head start on a healthy nail, the podiatrist gave me the option of surgical removal. It is not as bad as it sounds. It takes 5 minutes 1st thing in the morning, and 5 minutes last thing at night and 5 minutes whenever I shower to put medicine on my toes.
