Hey guys, today's video started as one thing and sort of ended as another. It was going to be just a light hearted quick 20 week pregnancy update but we got our ultrasound results the day before this went live and I had to interrupt the video to tell you the results. They were a bit scary, the midwife said that there was an Echogenic Intracardiac Foci noted on the exam, which basically is a potential calcification on the baby's heart. They said there "likely" won't be any issues, but they also can't rule it out. I was also told that I have a low-lying placenta and that it MAY or may not move out of the way, if it does - no problem. If it doesn't, they have to transfer my care to the hospital and I won't have my midwives available for me to give birth. I was also told that Homebirth has been canceled and that if everything else is normal, I will have to give birth in the birth center instead of home, like I had planned. I was just devastated at the news, but am trying to soak it all in and take it in stride. I DO NOT JUDGE ANYONE for their birth choices, we are ALL different and all have different wants and plans and needs for us for labor & delivery, but this was always my personal birth choice, and to have it taken away has been crushing. I am just so sad about it. Either way, I have to get used to the idea that we are now giving birth somewhere else.

I’m a MFM sonographer- meaning I do ultrasounds for high risk patients. I’m the person you come to when something is bad. First- you’re placenta low lying it means it will only ever move away from the cervix. It can’t just magically jump to cover the cervix. Also majority move away by 32 weeks. Like 90/95% of them move by the time of delivery. Second- the EIF. Lord above I hate finding them to report because they are so benign and cause unnecessary stress. With your NIPT (cell free dna) coming back normal it’s no stress to the doctors at my practice. If that’s the ONLY finding- they are basing classifying it as a soft marker for downs from a 1980s study before we had blood work and more advanced ultrasound. I see them often and they sometimes go away but I’ve never seen it be a problem. I hate this pandemic for my first time mommas because it takes away so much. Don’t let the ultrasound results take away more. Seriously if my baby had the EIF I wouldn’t even blink at it.

My daughter (turning 16 on the 29th of this month) had calcium build up and they told me it was a POSSIBLE sign of down syndrome. Like you, I bawled my eyes out (I was 16 at the time and was already super scared), but she turned out absolutely fine! I hope you take comfort in my story and the comment above. I won't tell you not to worry because it's natural as a mom, but I'm gonna pray that everything goes smoothly and baby rawbeauty is healthy as a horse! 💚💚

I honestly so hate when people (SPECIFICALLY OTHER WOMEN) make others feel they can't complain or even talk about the struggles that can come with pregnancy. Being in pain, being scared, being uncomfortable and talking about that in no way means you don't appreciate your pregnancy or aren't so thankful and lucky to have a pregnancy and baby. You're ALLOWED TO BE IN PAIN AMD UNCOMFORTABLE AND YOURE ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT IT

My baby had the calcification on his heart as well. I was in this EXACT position and felt how your feeling right now. I was terrified, started researching everyday which made me freak out worse. My baby came out perfectly fine and along the way I met a TON of moms who said they were told the same thing and their babies came out happy and healthy, no issues. I just wanted to let you know that because I know how terrifying uncertainty is. It drove me mad but it helped and gave me hope when I found women how went through the same situation and their babies were fine- 🤍❤️Sending you lots of love and good vibes💕

On husbands RU-vid, but my son had the calcification on his heart AND sandal gap on his toes. We had the genetic testing done as well with normal results. They told us the same and it scared me my whole pregnancy! He was born completely healthy! I know it’s hard, but please don’t worry! The chances are extremely low with normal genetic testing results.

Labor nurse here for 11 years :) This happens A LOT! And most the time, the placenta moves it’s way up ;) enjoy your pregnancy. C-sections bring your baby into the world just as vaginal births do. Please, let me give you advice...DO NOT set expectations like a birth plan, you’ll set yourself up for disappointment when it doesn’t go that way. The Dr’s have to tell you these things, you need to know all the risks. Home births can be great, but they can be soooooo scary too! Take it from me who has seen some shit hit the fan within seconds and having an OR right there is the most reassuring thing for us as medical professionals...quicker to get babies out so they can be HEALTHY! 💕 I’m a mom of 5, I know it’s scary, but let yourself glow because God knows you deserve it. So much love to you, enjoy that baby bump and those kicks.

Kristi, my first son had an EIF in his left ventricle (no other down’s markers) and the fear and unknown risk loomed over the duration of my pregnancy. I fully believe that my fear over what lay on the other side of birth contributed to a lengthy, difficult labor that resulted in a cesarean birth. I think my stress and fear prevented my pelvic floor from relaxing and allowing him to descend. Turns out, he has no chromosomal abnormalities and is perfectly healthy. PLEASE try to not let the fear overtake you. I did the NIPT this time for the reassurance because it’s far more accurate than what an EIF in isolation indicates. ❤️❤️❤️ Sending you so much love and light and wishing for peace for you!!!

Girl... If there's Anything I've learned from my pregnancies, it's that you can't expect ANYTHING! I still prefer being in control of certain things. But I've learned that with pregnancy and having kids, you're better off trying to relax and go with the flow as much as possible. Stress is the worst for you 3. You'll get through it though. You got this! On the scale of bad things during pregnancy, the stuff you're going through is manageable. Trust in that and your doctors.

Pregnancy is rough. With my first, I had such high hopes for a “natural” birth. The nurse/doc were super supportive until about 9 cm and a rapidly dropping heart rate. I never saw a doctor move so fast, and I delivered by c section. It is okay to change plans and it is also okay to mourn the change in plans.

I feel this. My first 2 kids were delivered via emergency c-section after I was fully dilated and started pushing. With my first I was beyond devastated about the c-section but I was more scared that I would lose her. With my second I knew that it was a possibility that it would happen again so I was more prepared. At the end of the day what mattered most was that my babies were safe and healthy

I was devastated at the time because I wanted so badly to experience a vaginal birth. Felt like I was failing.. but everything happens for a reason. My son came out healthy and perfect. It was very hard experience but I'm thankful he was healthy.

I've had 3 vaginal births, 2 c-sections (2nd one was with twins) and two losses, including a ruptured ectopic. I never saw birth as my experience, but as my first job as a parent. You brought your child into this world healthy, making sure they had great medical care right there to do so, and that is being a complete success, doing a wonderful, perfect job in that first job as a mother. We can't predict or plan childbirth. 5 different births can and often do go 5 different ways with 5 different circumstances presenting at that time. You had a big job, and you did it successfully.

And they had to tease my husband from looking past the cloth screen. I have an epic birth story and recovered so quickly. We laugh about it to this day. We all love you. Im 16w now and at 13w I was told I have placenta previa by a doctor (not my own) and they didn't give me any other information. Then when I saw my dr last week they told me to try and not worry about it, and I feel you is what I'm trying to say. Im a think negative until proven otherwise kind of person as well. Hi Kristie- I’m an ultrasound technologist and I’m sure all this information has been passed on to you before, but I thought I’d say it just in case. Typically, an EIF is just a prominent chordae tendinae, which is normal anatomy in the heart. A vast majority of the time, it’s nothing. So much so, that sometimes doctors won’t even mention it to patients. Calcifications also typically shadow on ultrasound and have a “twinkle” response to color Doppler. I’ve seen EIFs numerous times, it’s just a random incidental finding. I just wanted to try to reiterate that it’s likely nothing!

Hey Kristie! Another ultrasound tech here. I also wanted to add that a low lying placenta at 20weeks almost always moves up as the uterus grows. There is a debate in our profession about whether or not this can actually be diagnosed so early in the pregnancy because it almost always causes unnecessary stress for the mother. Please do not worry this early!! Xo

Hi Kristi! I’m a maternal fetal medicine ultrasound technologist. EIF’s are found quite often and typically don’t cause health problems; in fact most usually just disappear. They are little deposits of calcium on the heart muscle... and while they are a marker for DS, it’s quite uncommon. They are usually an isolated finding. I scan plenty of babies that have had them and they raise no concern 99% of the time...also, you look beautiful!

As a retired Maternal Fetal nurse who worked with fantastic ultrasound techs like Lisa, she is correct. A MFM specialist will tell you the same thing. This is called a soft marker. If there are no structural defects in the baby's heart God bless. Enjoy your pregnancy and the precious baby coming. Do not stress yourself with "birth plans". Babies have their own plans.💕

This! Yes, you get to mourn the birth you planned when it doesn’t go as planned. I had planned to give birth “naturally” to my son, even though I was going to have a hospital birth, I wanted to go as long as possible no epidural, ended up needing an emergency c-section. My daughter was born via c-section as well, but that one was planned. I literally have no idea what labor feels like, but I have two amazing, healthy kids. But there’s still a little part of me that, 7 years later, misses that. All that to say, your feelings are VALID, even though all of this won’t matter when you hold that Baby in your arms the first time, it matters.

Exactly. I saw some troll berating some newly pregnant woman (first baby) because she felt her husband was “robbed” of the opportunity to see their first ultrasound- which he WAS- arguing “iT’s FoR tHe SaFeTy...” WE GET IT. But she is mourning and she feels robbed! TOTALLY VALID. Glad to see so much more reasonable support here.

I am 37 weeks pregnant and can completely relate!!! I was also told there was a spot that illuminated on my baby’s heart during the 20 week anatomy scan. They had me do a follow up ultrasound a couple weeks later where they ruled out any issues. It’s been very hard not having the envisioned first pregnancy I always dreamed of. We cancelled our baby shower and my husband has not been able to attend appointments since March and I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes but just like you, we are trying to stay positive and it just is what it is! We are thankful that our baby boy is healthy and that’s all that really matters!!! Stay positive and wishing you the best for the remainder of your pregnancy! ❤️

For my second baby they said “Anatomy scan failure, they couldn't see the entire heart septum and said there might be a small hole, but they weren’t sure” they said when baby is born to come back to see the heart again, he was born healthy and all is well! I would say don’t worry about it, but I know I worried and it’s hard not to think about it, I will pray for you and your baby to be healthy ! I have PCOS and I had a difficult birth, but it’s all worth it in the end!

Very true ! With my first baby I showed a lot and very soon . Everyone thought I was having multiples and it was kind of annoying because people would say my belly was abnormally big . With my last I didn’t show til I was 7 months pregnant and it sucked . I would get told I probably didn’t eat very well and I had to be way showing way more for the time I had and all these things that would make me question myself . Moral of the story . Everyone here’s sharing their stories and I wanted to as well. My mom when she was pregnant with me found out she had ovarian cancer on her first ultrasound. Multiple doctors told her to abort me because I could have had multiple birth defects or she could have lost her life because they couldn’t treat her while pregnant. She refused to abort, I came out perfectly healthy and she had surgery right after birth. She’s still happy and healthy 26 years later ☺️ in her words “you saved my life, I wasn’t letting them take yours”. Every pregnancy is different. I’m truly happy for Kristi and her husband, I hope she and her baby will be safe through this pregnancy. 💕

I had placenta previa that resolved at 39w8d...i ended up delivering naturally with my midwives at 42w3d. It was a tough journey bc placenta previa is hard. Every time I wiped, I prayed to not see blood. One of my twins had a white spot on his heart and it resolved itself at 27 weeks. Kristi, I’m so sorry you are so stressed! My little one is 8 days old so I know exactly where you’re coming from with your fears. The best recommendation I can give you is to join a Facebook support group with other mom’s that are due near the same times as you. Everyone asks questions and you’re able to have a supportive group of women who know exactly what you’re going through! The emotions and relatable situations make you feel less alone and scared. I didn’t realize how many women have placenta previa or a low placenta until I joined my group. So many people had it and their placentas moved (sometimes it took a few ultrasound for it to move!) I am praying for you and your husband and your sweet little baby. You got this mama ❤️

I've had 5 pregnancies, all of them very different from each other. All of them with varying levels of complications either during pregnancy or birth. None of them had me more worried and frightened than my last baby. Everything was normal until my 20 week scan. That's when they discovered he was missing his nasal bone, which for those who don't know is a sign of Down Syndrome. I was tested immediately and was told to wait 9 days for the results. When I tell you,I cried for a day straight. I had to take a few days off from work to gather my thoughts and process the news in was just given. Down Syndrome is scary when you first hear it, and depending on who your dr is,being given that news can be frightening. Fortunately my dr was amazing and never said anything negative about his possible diagnosis. Fast forward 9 days and I get this call. They're sure my son has a 99.9 % chance of having DS. Some how actually recieving a positive diagnosis helped me. I spent those 9 days grieving over who I thought and expected my last child to be,I grieved over my other children's childhood possibly being turned upside down and my own life changing in ways I wasnt sure I could handle. But after the grief, came excitement and joy. My son was born at 34 weeks (early because I had severe hypertension) on Dec 24th 2018. My Christmas miracle. He has Down Syndrome, but luckily none of the health problems that are normally associated with it. He's amazing, and funny and the easiest baby I've ever had. Hes our joy,and light. I guess what I'm trying to say to anyone facing a difficult diagnosis is to have faith. Have faith that everything will be okay no matter what.

Here's my limited input as an ex-midwife. Firstly, you have every right to feel scared, sad, disheartened, elated, joyous, worried, or any other emotion at any time. Never feel the need to apologise for emotions. On the subject of EIF, it's a lot more common than many might think, usually, a good 1 in 20 are found to have an EIF. It does not affect the way the heart works or develops and it doesn't have any impact on the health of the baby. It's a common ultrasound finding of a normal developmental variation. You don't have to feel like your anxiety is any less valid, and I know the likelihood of this is slim - but if you want to comment here I am more than happy to provide some links to further reading to help arm yourself with that to help because as they say, knowledge is power. ETA: I have just watched a little more of the video and see you've been doing your best at research - EIF alone does not necessarily indicate a higher chance of Down's; it's just one of several 'markers' that when combined with other markers can indicate a possibility. Some markers are far more significant of an increased or 'high' risk (thickened nuchal fold, dilated ventricles in the brain, an abnormal artery to the upper extremities, or of even greater significance, an absent or small nose bone). I don't know how it goes where you are specifically, but I have heard in the past that American mothers are often informed they are high risk just on the presence of a single marker, which to me is quite utterly crazy!!! The unjust worry that must cause is beyond me! Regarding a low-lying placenta, there is a good chance it will indeed move up as you grow, which is also quite common during further development. I hope that to be the case for you because I can appreciate how worrying it must be to hear lists of 'complications' something can cause and it can be very hard when this then changes the 'plan'. I used to work with pregnant women who had problems with things like anxiety, depression, and other issues (not relating this to you, just explaining my background) so often we would work through birth plans in a slightly different way and actually make several broad plans at once. We would start with 'the plan', the 'this is how I want my birth to be' type of plan, but then also make plans for scenarios b, c, d, etc. The ultimate goal was to plan for a safe delivery for both mum and baby and while no plan can be perfect when it comes to having babies, many of the mums I worked with found it easier when something happened to impact on a birth plan and they could acknowledge their feelings and still say 'But I've got a plan for this'. What is important is to not fall foul of that catastrophising and end up making a lot of 'worst-case scenario' plans and unduly stressing yourself out worrying about things that may not happen. Keep it broad, plan for home, plan for the hospital, plan for early, plan for late. I'm sure your midwives will be more than happy to help guide you along. As for home births being cancelled indefinitely with COVID-19, I'm so sorry. That one sadly, no one could prepare for. You feel what you need to feel about it because that is your right. Grieve for it for as long as you need to know and try to take comfort in knowing that the decision has been made to protect you and your baby in every way possible.

I also appreciate your comment! I hope that she sees it. I would like to ask your opinion on something if I may. Since you have dealt with many pregnant women, maybe you will have some insight. My daughter is pregnant with her first child, a boy, due July 31st. Due to several issues, she was raised primarily by my mother-in-law, but I saw her every weekend and was involved in her life. We have always been fairly close, but not the typical mother/daughter relationship. We would talk a lot and text all the time. However, when she got pregnant, (she didn't even tell me alone, I was told at the same time as the entire family at Christmas). I never said anything and just gave her the space I thought she needed. She seemed to continue to withdraw from me and has been distant throughout. She wanted no help with the nursery and I've sent her pictures of things I bought, but she said that wasn't her taste and she didn't want to hurt my feelings so she really doesn't need gifts from me that she won't use. I expressed to her that this is my first grandchild and I am just excited and want to be included, but she says that this is a special time for her and her husband and she wants no one at the hospital and has not decided about having visitors when he is born. She had a shower scheduled, but due to covid, it was changed to a drive thru shower. I drove an hour to bring a gift from her registry ($300 stroller) and someone I didn't know came to the car and picked it up. Yet later that day, pictures with 10 hostesses inside (including my mother-in-law and other daughter) were there with her, helping open presents and taking pictures. It was so hurtful but she said it was for hostesses only and had she invited me in, she would have to invite both grandparents on both sides, adding 4 more people. She did text me this week of her latest update (she's 39 weeks and 2.5 cm etc). I told her I would have my phone on so she could call at any hour. She informed me that they would not be concerned with calling people and her husband would send a group text out, whether that was while she was in labor or after he was born. Never did I think I would learn of my first grandchild in a text. She also sent a text out saying she wants nothing on social media until she posts, not that she is labor or any pictures of any kind. Am I being overly sensitive or is she being a "preg-zilla"? I've been in tears all day. I know it's not about me and all that matters is a healthy baby and mom. Advice appreciated, everyone!

Tandi Nicole I think you’re being overly sensitive, to answer your question? I had a daughter 2 years ago and felt basically everything your daughter has expressed. I wanted the nursery to be to my taste, I didn’t want to work my design around pieces other people had bought. There are ways to be involved without upsetting her by making her change her plans. My daughter was born obviously way before COVID and I also didn’t want anyone there afterwards. I just wanted to begin healing and adjustment with just my husband and our baby. That’s who is most important then. Our plans changed when my daughter was resuscitated at birth and spent time in the NICU. We allowed visitors a day or two later. This is a really special time in her life and I think it’s most important to support her in whatever way she is asking for her, nothing more. If you push too much or maybe complain, you could push her further. Just my opinion from someone who felt similar to what you’re describing.

Tandi Nicole idk I think that some of this stuff your saying is pretty cold of her and I’m sorry you are going through that. Me and my mom don’t have the closest relationship and I still invited her to all 4 of my births. I will say as my small piece of advice is that, I would try to let go and make peace. Does she have something against you? Maybe, probably.. Does she realize and understand that she is holding something against you? Maybe, maybe not. Who knows. She may be doing it unconsciously. It sounds to me like you are using discretion and not venting your concerns to her and i think that’s the right move. Ultimately all we can do is accept that our loved ones are responsible for telling us if they have some sort of problem with us. If they don’t, there’s nothing we can do about that, it’s their problem to address, not ours. I have a real hot and cold relationship with one of my family members. Sometimes she loves me, wants to speak to me, other times she ignores me and won’t speak to me for months and I have no idea why. I’ve had to accept that it’s not my job to figure why she is this way with me and it’s on her to bring it up if she has an issue with me and in the mean time, I’ll be patient and wait and hope for the best. Anyway yeh I would pray for her, forgive her, and try to accept that this is where she’s at for whatever reasons. Sorry I wish I had an easier answer. 💖

I've had to attend my appointments alone. I got my first ultrasound and learned that I was carrying twins and lost one. All I wanted was my partner there to comfort me but I had to sit alone while dealing with the fact that I lost a baby. It sucked. But, I'm still super grateful to have the other baby. Hey Kristi! I had a low lying placenta with my oldest. It seems scary but it is okay. Mine didn’t move, so after a lot of crying, I decided to have a c section. If thats what happens to you, it would NOT make you less of a mother, ever. I had a midwife, she was super fucking rude and disrespectful about having a c section. Suggesting I was lazy, but it came down to the safety of my child. You got this mama!

It definitely is, I believe it's completely normal and natural. I definitely do. I wanted a natural birth, I wanted no part of an epidural. My blood pressure had other plans and my son was an emergency C-section at 30 weeks. My second pregnancy I wanted a VBAC and didn't get that either. I fully accepted what needed to happen but I will always feel a little robbed. My kids are worth it though 😊.

I paused my phone and said probably one of the most real prayers I’ve ever prayed my entire life. I typically don’t speak my prayers out loud but in my head but I felt compelled to speak it out loud. My husband watched your announcement video and he immediately prayed for the health and safety of your pregnancy. I don’t tend to talk about prayer and my biblical or “religious” beliefs (I believe in God but I don’t with man made religious tactics and toxic beliefs) but I have never had that experience before. I was driving while I prayed and my entire body started tingling and I just felt this overwhelming sense of peace, and I asked for God to please do the same to you and protect you and your baby and your family and Zach. Sorry if this all sounds crazy and over the top. I just want for this to go well for you so so bad, you deserve it more then anyone. I adore you and have for so long. Love you girl 💕
