I lived in Queens at the time, and I recall everyone huddled around my father’s car as he blasted the news from his SUV. It was so hot that day that I took a couple of cold showers to cool off. It couldn’t have happened on a hotter day. 🥵

I worked in Footlocker in Staten Island mall. Soon as the power went out. Ppl came into my store an robbed all the clothing, clearance sneakers an it was complete chaos. It took me 6 hours to get home to Brooklyn, an on my block all the neighbors were having bbq in the yards to avoid loosing meat an foods that would go bad 😂. I slept in the tub with cold water What a time to be alive 😅

I was living in the Bronx but working right by Madison Square Garden. The blackout happened in the afternoon as the workday was ending. I had to walk all the way up to Washington Heights to stay at my friend's apartment since the subways were out (8 mile walk, approximately). It was quite an interesting walk and I remember my friend, being from NYC (Dominican-American from WH), running into several people she knew on our very long and sweaty walk. The streets were packed with people walking home. I was 25 at the time so it was nothing for me. As it got darker we decided to walk through Riverside Drive, all the way up to I believe it was the 170s or so. There were so many people out on the street in the dark and some of the kids were turning on the fire hydrants. We finally got to her place and her kind mother served us some dinner and let us stay. In the morning the train service came back and I went home. Can't believe it's been 20 years. I'm ever so grateful to my friend and her mother.

YOU WAS SO LUCKY TO BE SO YOUNG BACK THEN. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME I WAS 19 LIVING IN THE BROWNSVILLE SECTION OF BROOKLYN (RALPH AVE & UNION ST) AND WAS IN A SUPERMARKET ABOUT 5 BLOCKS FROM THE HOUSE WITH MY MOTHER(RIP MOM) AND MY SISTER GETTING INGREDIENTS FOR DINNER WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE LIGHTS STARTED TO FLICKER THEN THE POWER WENT OUT ABOUT 20 SECONDS LATER AND WE HAD TO LEAVE THE STORE. WHILE WE WERE CHECKING OUT I NOTICED THE 3 TRAIN THAT RUNS PAST THE STORE WAS STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF A KIND OF SHARP TURN AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS WEIRD ( THIS WAS BEFORE I FOUND OUT THE TRACKS POWER THE TRAIN AND DOESN'T RUN ON ITS OWN POWER INDEPENDENT OF THE TRACKS). SO WE WALKED HOME AND EVERYONE WAS OUTSIDE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW TO GET POWER AND CANDLES FOR THE NIGHT. WELL WE GOT SOME CANDLES FROM THE CORNER STORE AND LIT THEM AROUND THE HOUSE SO IT WASN'T THAT DARK IN THE HOUSE AND LUCKY WE HAD 2 PORTABLE GAS STOVES TO COOK DINNER(FRIED CHICKEN AND MASHED POTATOES) AND JUST SOMEHOW SLEEP THROUGH THE HOTTEST NIGHT EVER WITHOUT THE AIR CONDITIONER. WE WAS SO HAPPY WHEN AT 2:20PM THE NEXT DAY WHEN WE WERE PREPARING FOR ANOTHER HOT NIGHT THE BATHROOM LIGHT CAME ON AND WE TURNED ON THE AIR CONDITIONER SO FAST IT WAS GREAT FOR THAT TO BE OVER BUT IM STILL PISSED ABOUT ONE THING ABOUT THAT NIGHT THAT WWE OR UPN DIDN'T RE-AIR THE EPISODE OF SMACKDOWN I MISSED BECAUSE NYC DIDN'T HAVE POWER!!

What I remember most was the feeling in the city that this wasn't going to be a repeat of 1977. People really pitched in and stuck up for the city on this one. I don't remember anything other than good times and parties all night. In retrospect, the city was sort of reaching it's apex that year which would last until that fateful day in March 2020 when the evil demons decided to pull the plug on society and start the hunger games world we now live in. Does anyone think NYC would fare as well with a blackout today as it did on that day in 2003?

perfectly said. nyc was still just 2 yrs removed from guilliani law and order and people just knew not to fk around and that the nypd would be crushing skulls. no more. would be a nightmare of epic proportions. no home would be safe from people of color.

nyc was going downhill pre covid. DeBlasio taking office is what started it. it is definitely worse now than it was in 2019 though. if the blackout happened in in 2019 it would be a lot worse than in 2003. and it would be even worse today. i also think being less than 2 years after 9/11 was also a big factor in people having a "we're in this together" mindset. That was still extremely fresh on everyone's mind. I was stuck on the train for about 2 hours and walked about 100 blocks to meet up with friends I was on my way to meet. I was basically halfway between them and home so I figured that would be more fun. People were extremely nice and friendly overall. No looting. a lot of people hanging out drinking etc.

I was 6 years old and visiting my aunt and uncle in NYC already from the SF Bay Area! My mom and I went up the Empire State Building maybe an hour or 2 before the blackout. We were in the lobby of the City Court Building when it started happening. We had to walk all the way back to their apartment on 93rd street and Central Park West!
@seanboy316
@seanboy316 Год назад
I was working at the Empire State building at the time. I was on the 66th floor. When the blackout happened, I walked down 66 flights of stairs. Then I walked all the way to 169th St. where my sister lived. That was at least 135 blocks. It was the most exercise I had in years. I remember I couldn't walk without pain for a week afterward. When I came back to work, everyone asked where I was because they all thought I was trapped in an elevator. It seems that they were doing a headcount of their employees, and I was not there, so they assumed the worst. After September 11, no one had to tell me twice to exit the building, especially a building like the Empire State.

This Blackout was odd compared to '77, I just got off work from the USPS delivering mail with overtime, the moment I got home the light went out but it was still sunny outside but the Apartment complex was dark as fc , you could see 2 feet in from of you. I walked up 6 flights to get my Studio Apartment to get my Flashlight and go back downstairs to help my fellow neighbors get to their apartments.
